Has anybody checked if JK has changed his mind?

Plus stockpiling 1.2 million tonnes of coal (= 2.5 MtCo2) for the coming winter.

The fact that most academic conferences force people to attend in person to participate is a travesty and I want to see it end. Us nerds who just want to talk about science with our colleagues do NOT need to fly halfway across the world in an under-regulated tin can full of covid to do so.

Two points on the whole AI crap. 1. I remember being an educator when wikipedia arrived on the scene, and our whole profession having absolute fits, forbidding students from referencing it etc. Wikipedia was and is GREAT for students. Now with AI? Immediate capitulation. bsky.app/profile/jkst...

Interesting-looking new study on the discourses put forward by the road lobby to influence transport policy doi.org/10.1016/j.jt...

Had an OIA on the Marsden decisions land. This appears to be the ground zero and the level of thinking Collins put into gutting humanities funding. I have found no actual *advice* or analysis on the removal of humanities panels and literally zero engagement with Royal Society or Universities.

Wow that was quick I only signed yesterday.

Wellington is a cycling city. 1500 riders counted at 5.30pm. 🌞 @cyclewgtn.bsky.social

A closer look at the extent of sea ice globally that just set a new all-time record minimum, which is due to unusually low sea ice conditions in both the #Arctic & #Antarctic right now. Data from nsidc.org/data/seaice_... 🧪⚒️🥼❄️

When you've lost your own ministers (and former ministers)... At a minimum, consultation should be opened on all speed limit reversals on state highways and on local roads. Still wouldn't undo the damage of the new speed limit rule but it would be a start.

@cyclingactionnz.bsky.social is fighting for safe speeds on New Zealand roads. Here's why. thespinoff.co.nz/politics/10-...

Reminder: A system's behavior can get chaotic in advance of transitions or transformations. Don't assume that today is the end point of anything. Today is a moment of multifold potential.

“Am departing presidential councils. Climate change is real. Leaving Paris is not good for America or the world,” Musk said Thursday on Twitter, shortly after the president announced that he would begin the process of leaving the accord. Oh wait that was 2017. edition.cnn.com/2017/06/01/n...

“Four of seven NIWA scientists who contributed to the research - including Morgenstern- have left the institute after losing their jobs in cost-cutting, and now work overseas.” 💔

Don’t Look Up (2025)

New Zealand mentioned!

A lot of folks asked why I through this January's record global temperatures were so unexpected. I think this graph shows it pretty clearly: pretty much every other January with La Nina conditions has been a cooler than the surrounding years.

Accurate for Australian VCs too

To reduce road danger, this Friday (7th Feb) default speed limits on rural local roads in Ireland will decrease from 80km/h to 60km/h. Later in the year limits in ‘urban cores’ will reduce to 30km/h. National secondary roads will go from 100km/h to 80km/h. Good policy & inspiration for UK gov

Remind me what's wrong with our economy again?

The case for investing in cycling is compelling. We're all better off when more people bike. Why is the NZ Govt ignoring the evidence? www.tvnz.co.nz/news/news-in... @cyclewgtn.bsky.social

Just a reminder that the evidence shows reducing speeds not only saves lives, but also promotes higher average speeds (more efficient flow), lowers emissions (more efficient flow), boosts productivity (less accidents and the delays they cause), and lowers the $9.6b liability to the economy from

Who is the J G Ballard of the 21st century?

More anti-foreign, anti-UN, climate denialist statements from a senior NZ cabinet minister, during a speech in his role representing the NZ government. This pattern of statements is a serious problem for NZ and undermines the government’s stated desire to attract migrants and foreign investment.

On NDC2: stopping dangerous climate change (like that which has pushed up home insurance 47% since the 2023 floods) means phasing out fossil fuels. New Zealand has already reduced fossil CO2 from 9.1 tonnes/person in 2005 to 5.8t now, so it's not as if we've done nothing.

Prepare your mind for New Zealand's next climate target by seeing what our former climate ambassador has to say www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

Yes, good to see a start made on gas, whose use has doubled since 2009. The data (from MBIE Energy 2023) doesn't record any direct use of bioenergy (eg wood pellets) which may be an error.

Tamino estimates the world is warming at 3.3 ºC/century – a tenth of a degree every three years. Scary. Every tenth of a degree matters. tamino.wordpress.com/2025/01/28/e...
