This is the thing. Manufacturing jobs 100 years ago were dangerous, precarious, and poorly paid. Manufacturing jobs 70 years ago were a golden ticket to the middle class. The jobs didn't change. What changed was the New Deal and unions.

A great article by Gail Cornwall in @theatlantic.com on Quaker attitudes toward child-raising and schooling, chock-full of links to great Quaker resources (including two @friendsjournal.org articles and a Quakerspeak video).

And @corybooker.com namechecks Quakers! About 10 minutes before breaking the record.

This is all going down in the Congressional Record, right? Senator @corybooker.com is quoting more intellectual giants after 24 hours straight than any political speech I ever heard.

Millions of you, around the world, have put the lessons I wrote in #OnTyranny in late 2016 to good use. It has been humbling to learn how from courageous and creative dissenters, protestors, and oppositionists. I was honored when John Lithgow volunteered to read them aloud.

I am fed up with fictional characters who are "almost sixty, [but] his posture was still erect and his stride still vigorous and graceful" or "on the downside of sixty, ... [her] skin lined like the joints of an aged leather garment."

The best part of following a lot of writers is that sometimes they write epic stories of their days, about their mortal trials and tribulations, that in the hands of a lesser writer, would be just a lot of skeets in a row instead of a saga worthy of reading all the way to the end.

Now attending the public event at Coleman Library to hear community ideas about new transit oriented development around the Germantown SEPTA station. 💯 Can recommend.

Hey, I'm doing a radio show tonight! Which is Wednesday! 5-8 pm ET on 103.3 fm WPRB. listen.wprb.com

The whole thing!

Takeaway from R&FPW @cfr.org : US pulling out of international commitments creates a vacuum that will be filled by other actors (other countries, other religious groups, other economic interests) & defeats the purpose of making the US more secure, more prosperous, and more of a great power

BREAKING: Quaker meetings sue Trump admin to keep ICE out of houses of worship. We represent them in challenging this harmful policy, which reverses decades of protections and has already sowed fear in many congregations. Read the full statement: democracyforward.org/updates/sensitive-locations/

Mind opening

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

Here is how to disable Copilot in Word on a Mac. My version was slightly different. It was this: Expand "Word" menu > Preferences > Personal Settings > Privacy > go down to "Connected Experiences" and click Manage Connected Experiences > uncheck all the boxes > restart Word (cont'd)

My healthy kitchen resolution this year is to put leftovers into rewashed glass jars instead of plastic. Unless it's going in the freezer. Then I think plastic is better than broken glass in the bottom of the freezer drawer.

I’ve always thought of Jimmy Carter and Herbert Hoover as twin spirits. Two of the smartest men to become president; two of the most politically tone deaf, too. And both were driven by their faith to give back to the public, though Hoover’s good work all came *before* entering politics.

Worth reading the whole saga. I'm wiping tears from laughing so hard.
