This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

I wrote about Spotify, meme politics, and the slop world of America's favorite anti-semite for @readliberties.bsky.social libertiesjournal.com/online-artic...

Still searching for some use of my substack. For now, here's my first scrapbook, with links to recent pieces, albums I'm listening to, reflections on Egon Schiele, and also a little bit of my new novel: open.substack.com/pub/robertru...

this man looks like a pumpkin still on the stoop at thanksgiving

more and more these days, I find myself thinking that you can accept the discipline of your political goals or you can accept the discipline of your resentments.

One of the most horrifying stories to come out of this war of extermination. I posted the Hebrew reporting a few days ago, here it is in English. www.972mag.com/gaza-human-s...

donald trump has ordered the IRS to hand over all of your personal information to a Holocaust denier who works for the richest man on Earth, who is a Nazi

the single most un-american and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an american president

“He visited Dachau and offered a few canned remarks about how inspired he was by the stories of the ‘unspeakable evil’ he witnessed… Then, when his trip to Europe concludes next week, he’ll return to the United States to continue overseeing the construction of internment camps to house migrants.”

Personally I’m just glad free speech and academic freedom are protected again, and we’ve gotten rid of all that political correctness www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Yes, we let a rich idiot nobody elected destroy the entire government, but it was that or make rich people pay taxes so that poor people could go to the doctor

"The future of the [DOE]—and of the students with disabilities who depend on it—will likely hinge less on the person appointed to lead it than on the world views of two billionaires who abhor what they perceive as weakness and waste." The plan to "euthanize" pub ed & its impact on the vulnerable.

"No one in the Soy Right makes affirmative choices; they’re smol beans who need protection and care." maxread.substack.com/p/soy-right-...

At the Deathbed, by Edvard Munch, 1895

Writing a frankly insane number of words about something ridiculous

In a new lawsuit filed against Trump by state AGs, a family with a trans kid shares she died by suicide last month citing fears Trump would deny her access to gender-affirming care. "Her parents have expressed fear...that what happened to their daughter does not happen to other children."

My entire adult life has been defined by overconfident idiots crashing the economy, my chosen career industries, and now the US government. Thanks for the consistency.

“Our anti-polio eradication program is not functioning right now because the missions are shut down. They're going to close all 80 missions? That's the stupidest idea I have ever heard.”

i have long felt that self-described "constitutional conservatives" were just subjects looking for a tyrant and they found him

they are mostly targeting black employees so this is quite literally just a repeat of woodrow wilson’s segregationist purge of the federal government

Some of my early experiences in this line of work were in eastern Bosnia—investigating mass graves and interviewing the survivors of massacres perpetrated during ethnic cleansing. Did not expect to hear in 2025 a US official extolling the benefits of ethnic cleansing.

"Musk’s total idiocy is structural: it goes back to the very origin of the Greek term idiotes, a person who cannot understand the shared political life of the city." www.unpopularfront.news/p/what-happe...

Ah, the millennial experience of “every time you get some measure of financial and career stability, the world decides to do something extraordinarily stupid again”

"Let’s not play pretend and give it a profundity it doesn’t deserve, whatever the vibe-mongers tell us. It’s hard to practice reason when dominated by irrationality—in fact, it’s impossible—but it’s also a categorical imperative in this era. We must try." Bravo @lioneltrolling.bsky.social

I demand that Chuck Schumer be digitized and uploaded so he can take back control of government systems from inside the computer realm

So much of this cultural shift discourse reminds me of the propaganda campaign against opponents of the Iraq War

Damn, it's almost like the interests of capital are incompatible with those of democracy
