At last! Beaver releases into wild to be allowed in England for first time in centuries Big congrats to the rewilders, nature-friendly farmers, & campaigners who’ve fought for this for so long. And credit where it’s due - thanks to Labour for pressing go! www.theguardian.com/environment/...

After 3,000 years, Tasmanian devils are back on mainland Australia. In a landmark move for conservation, 26 of these carnivorous marsupials have been released into a protected sanctuary in Barrington Tops, New South Wales. indiandefencereview.com/tasmanian-de...

Here's one of the warnings I gave in an article before the US election. It's devastating to see it all happening. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Great news that DEFRA might finally open up data on soils in England. It sounds niche but it's super-important for everything from restoring peat bogs to protecting most fertile agricultural land. I first wrote to DEFRA about doing this in *2016*... 😮‍💨 bsky.app/profile/owen...

Phlyctis argena on hawthorn, Pensthorpe TF92/VC28 West Norfolk, England. Striking chalky-white #lichen. Widespread in Britain, locally common, pollution-tolerant. Distinguished from much rarer P agelaea by soredia, not apothecia. Field notes to come! @norfolknats.bsky.social @robyaxley.bsky.social

‘Smacks of hypocrisy’ & ‘tests the limits of credulity’: the irrepressible @lewis-winks.bsky.social dismantles Alexander Darwall’s case for banning the right to wild camp on Dartmoor - in Country Life, no less! - www.countrylife.co.uk/nature/dartm...

Farming is a tough job & it's only getting tougher as our climate changes. But what if there was a better way to feed 10 billion people, one that didn't involve hardship, slaughtering animals or wrecking the environment? There is, as @georgemonbiot.bsky.social explains.

What X is currently like

The implication of this is that wildlife is for other people in other countries to preserve and restore, but not us. We are too special, or too useless.

Imagine you were the richest man in the world. You could have anything you wanted, go anywhere you wished, do whatever took you fancy. How would you spend your weekend? Depriving the poorest people in the world of food and healthcare and boasting about it?

A nice summary of the big issue with flea and tick treatments for pets. UK based research, but we use the very same products over here. There's no doubt that we have the same issues.

So now we have it. Rachel Reeves's claim that a third runway at Heathrow Airport would boost economic growth comes from a report commissioned by .... Heathrow Airport. Instead of acting in the national interest, she's channelling corporate lobbyists. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Just some gorgeous #orchids & a nice #bromeliad.

Been reading through the Government's new Land Use Consultation. Here's the juiciest bits I've seen so far! An excellent, bold proposal to spare 9% of England's least-productive land for nature & carbon - restoring peat bogs & regenerating woods - & changes to ag land use over a further 10% /1

More runways , more planes , more fossil fuels . It’s not just sitting idly by , it’s actively accelerating climate collapse in the reckless pursuit of growth in archaic industries instead of a rapid transition to a green economy .

Winter offers a challenge to identify plants when their flowers are but a distant memory.

I hate winter #FungiFriends

This petition to stop Musk pouring his cash into UK politics is currently the most popular on the parliamentary petitions site It’s leapt from under 30k signatures yesterday evening to nearly 40k now You know what to do: keep signing & sharing! bsky.app/profile/guys...

If you’re afraid to write your book because you think its content stands no chance in the coming climate, Remember that banned books (and books victims thought the world would never see) are the only honest window we have into some of the darkest moments of history. Write the book. #booksky

Vast swathes of UK farm fields are spread with sewage sludge - a mix of human & industrial waste. We tested some, & found levels of PFAS & fire retardants that wouldn't be considered safe for use on allotments. Our article in the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

This is a big deal. The court's decision to allow the Hawaii case to proceed sustains the nearly 40 other climate liability cases in state courts. 🤞

Hollywood is on fire , yet still deniers clutch at straws to blame this on anything other than the real problem– climate breakdown . I’m petitioning for a ban on fossil fuel ads to take the fight to the companies who continue to exploit our fragile planet petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Spotted this tiny crinoid column by the stream in Lower Woods recently. These ‘living fossils’ are relatives of sea cucumbers & urchins, despite looking like a plant. #FossilFriday

If you're planting daffodils, crocuses, and other spring-flowering bulbs and you don't get them all to the ideal depth, don't fret! Many flowering bulbs can *pull themselves* deeper with contractile roots! 📷 Rama Sisodia & Satish C. Bhatla; Mordecai J. Jaffe & A. Carl Leopold

Just incredibly bleak that when a Labour government is finally in power, disabled people still have to wake up to front pages calling them a blight on society.

It seems to me that the debate over applying inheritance text to farmland has been v one sided. At the risk of making myself unpopular, a thread of observations follows: 1) For a couple leaving a farm to their descendants, the tax threshold is £3 million, not £1 million as widely stated.

Remember that footage of gamekeepers killing a Hen Harrier on a grouse moor? Seen pictures of moors being set alight in recent weeks? It’s time to ban driven grouse shooting. Please sign @wildjustice.bsky.social’s petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Please allow me to re-share my rough sketch of some advanced carbon capture technology

There is absolutely no way, if it wasn’t already normalised, anyone would think letting pet cats roam freely made any sense at all. But we’re afraid to tackle such issues.

This makes me so sad.

The MOST ABUNDANT PROTEIN ON EARTH is probably the one that almost all life depends on. It makes up ~3% of the mass of every leaf & blade of grass on the planet: a total weight of 10^11 kg. Let's talk about Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase or 'RuBisCO'. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
