I’m sorry but I have zero tolerance for the “why didn’t she do [insert laundry list of things]” when a man who got on national television saying “they’re eating the pets” is in office. It was NEVER about what she did or said. Stop wasting time arguing with people who refuse to acknowledge that.

I named my company Pacific Tech after the school in Real Genius when I was collaborating on Claris Home Page with SPI, which secretly stood for Smart People on Ice. Rest in peace, Val Kilmer. May his memory be a blessing. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJDn...

Has anyone tried unplugging America and plugging it back in again?

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

This is, in large part, pandemic revenge. As far as these oligarchs are concerned, all science does is tell them stuff they cannot do. They can't keep spewing carbon. They can't keep businesses open as usual when millions are dying. They have concluded that research is the enemy of profit.

"They wanted pictures of brown men being frog-marched through a maximum security prison [so] they rounded up a bunch of useful suspects and sent them to another dictator's prison." On the pod, @douglasrivlin.bsky.social is great on Trump's real goals w/deportations: newrepublic.com/article/1934...

If you thought COVID sucked, wait until the next one Wait until our gains on HIV start to reverse Wait for it because people are going to die www.wired.com/story/cdc-gu...

It's not an exaggeration to say what we're seeing today at CDC and NIH is the wholesale gutting of scientific research in the U.S.

Trust is a currency too valuable to spend on pranks.

Abolish ICE is not an absurdity statement. ICE was created in 2003 as a response to 9/11 - we do not need it. We already established that following orders isn't an excuse.

I have followed the #RoyalSociety #Musk fellowship case over the last months, which culminated in this disappointment: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/25/royal-society-decides-not-to-take-disciplinary-action-against-elon-musk As a consequence […] [Original post on datasci.social]

It's simple. Everyone in the US enjoys the protections of the Constitution - even visitors. So if someone commits a crime here, you give them due process here. You charge them here, try them here, and sentence them here. You don't deport them to an offshore torture prison.

The reason that the US is locking up tourists for weeks in hellish detention centers rather than letting them book tickets back home is because the detention centers are owned by corporations. They are charging the taxpayers fortunes to cage these people, and making bonanzas off their suffering.

To be clear, the destruction of the U.S. is the result of putting a deranged convicted felon who would fail a security clearance back in office instead of in jail and then allowing him to appoint a cabinet of unqualified criminal goons who would also fail a security clearance.

It's not just that "every accusation is a confession"; it's also that every accusation is a RATIONALIZATION. The lie that the other side is rigging elections rationalizes vote suppression. The lie that legitimate investigations are "weaponizing government" is the excuse to weaponize government.

NEW: Per a source with knowledge, the entire HHS Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy, or OIDP, was just fired.

Breaking: RFK Jr. has forced out PETER MARKS, the nation’s top vaccine regulator. In his resignation letter, obtained by the Post, Marks said he was willing to work with RFK Jr on his vaccine concerns — but said Kennedy wishes “subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies.”

🚨This. Is. How. You. Do. It. 🚨

Corrupt judges let a criminal get away with treason and run for president. Propagandists masquerading as journalists lied to enough people that the criminal won. Then the criminal sold a half share in the presidency to the world's richest man, whom no one voted for. That's what happened, folks.

Martial Law. It’s the elephant in the room. It’s what authoritarians resort to when the tide turns against them. It’s what the authoritarian in this White House is setting the stage for. 🧵…

The reason we have courts of law is to avoid violence. If the AG is going to set the rule that the trespasses and crimes of her team will NOT be subject to the law, they will only be able to be redressed through violence. This is some scary and very dangerous shit.

"My name is___. I live in [city, zip] I'm calling to ask my rep what they're doing about this admin arresting people who have not been charged with a crime. In some cases, they moved people over state lines. Rumeysa Ozturk was moved against judge's orders. I need my rep to do something. Thank you."

Grants are getting killed “without any scientific input anywhere. It is purely political. The science in this country is going to be destroyed if you can change what the priorities are going to be every four years. You can’t do science that way.” wapo.st/3QSgPNg

I fully expect some Republican to hold up a paper and say “I have here in my hand a list of 205—a list of names that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the State Department.” any day now…

The Trump regime will round you up off the street and arrest you because you spoke your mind. And federal agents in plain clothes and unmarked cars who refuse to identify themselves will be the ones to do it. It's fascism. Call it what it is.

This guy is in one of the worst prisons in the world with no way out and may spend the rest of his life there because, it appears, he has an autism awareness tattoo in honor of his little brother. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

I keep thinking about @sarahkendzior.bsky.social : "They don't mind being caught, they mind being punished. Learn the difference. Trump and his backers have been committing crimes with impunity for decades." Suffering no consequences is part of flexing their power. It reveals their collaborators.

in all seriousness: one of the most important philosophical questions of our time

Happy One Month Anniversary to this story.

Jeffrey Goldberg thinking he was being pranked and then realizing he was actually just in the war plans group chat is such a good microcosm of how it feels to be alive right now, everything seems fake until you realize it’s actually real and incredibly stupid

Every single Democratic lawmaker should be calling for Hegseth's immediate resignation right now. Not just some. Not just a few dozen. Every single one, starting at the top with Mr. Schumer and Mr. Jeffries. And the fact that it hasn't happened yet is nearly as shocking as Hegseth's conduct.

In case you’ve forgotten how we used to treat this sort of thing… There would be bipartisan calls for investigations Impeachment would be a foregone conclusion Several people would’ve resigned or been fired by end of day Back when responsible adults were in charge, not this insane clown posse

The most obvious lesson to draw from the leaked Signal chat is that these people really are morons. It's not a public act, it's not a schtick, there's not some secret back room where they drop the facade. They are genuinely stupid, incompetent people.

I think I like the real leader of the Democratic Party. (He's leading but maybe too far ahead for some of them to see?)

Travel to the United States! Highlights include: -viral outbreaks -food borne illness -plane crashes -shootings -race and gender based violence -ICE detention centers -and more!

People tell me I’m too loud or aggressive or moralizing about Covid, but no one sane tells me I’m wrong, because the science is incontrovertible. Every covid reinfection is a huge risk, for every person.

“I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested I'd like to think that if I was I would pass Look at the tested and think "There but for the grace go I" Might be a coward, I'm afraid of what I might find out” www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIGM... Been thinking of this a lot as we're all being tested.

"On October 8, 1931, a law went into effect requiring every Italian university professor to sign an oath pledging their loyalty to the government of Benito Mussolini. Out of over 1,200 professors in the country, only 12 refused. All of them were immediately fired." www.chronicle.com/article/what...

Judge Reyes exploded at a DOJ lawyer in a hearing on Trump's transgender troops ban: "I am not going to abide by government officials saying one thing to the public - saying what they really mean to the public - and coming in here to the court and telling me something different like I'm an idiot."

Something I learned this week: there is a relatively simple equation that defines a properly embedded punctured torus in R^3. Here it is: x(x^2+y^2+z^2-1)=2yz. I’ll explain where I got this.

Tyrants view educated citizens as their greatest enemy. Slaveholders stopped the enslaved from learning to read. Nazis burned books. Dictators censor media. That’s why Trump is attacking education, science, museums, and the arts – to prevent us from learning. It's Fascism 101.

With its measles outbreak spreading to two additional states, Texas is on track to becoming the cause of a national epidemic if it doesn’t start vaccinating more people, according to public health experts.

"There is no such thing as a COVID infection without consequence," says researcher David Putrino. Personally, I think we should all be *furious* that we were told it was perfectly safe to get this virus so that we could all go back to work, but that's just me. www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks...

if, ten years ago, your entire understanding of politics was that the right wing wanted to destroy everything because they were evil, you had a more accurate and more predictive analysis than functionally the entire American media and political apparatus

Listen, I know we’re entirely out of power and our party leadership is capitulating to Nazis and their average age is 97, and we lost Roe and the presidency and climate change and maybe social security and Medicare, and people are being disappeared off the streets, but why change course now?
