I worked in that area for abut 35 years—and was always struck by the sharp boundary between the East End and the City (although it’s blurred a bit over the years). On one side of the street a gleaming bank or insurance company and across the road a dilapidated rag shop. The phrase ‘cheek by jowl’ …
