Five unknowns about any possible deal to end Ukraine-Russia war

Talk about a good ROI. Vladimir Putin’s investment in Donald Trump is sure paying off. Read @davidcorn.bsky.social's timely newsletter from yesterday.

A humiliation at the White House and what does it tell us? Trump would make a colony of my country | Andrey Kurkov

I will never forget the photo of Zelenskyy’s face after he saw Russia’s war crimes in Bucha in 2022. He seemed to age years in an afternoon. Watching him constantly cross the world asking for aid that should have been thrown at him is one of the deepest shames of our age.

"In the 80s, the American public had a much more rudimentary understanding of colonialism’s dependence on racism than it does today. But even kids in high school knew that apartheid was wrong, and famine was wrong."

📢Did you know GOP leaders are shopping around proposals that would make it harder for married women to vote? I’m not joking, but I wish I was. The proposal would change our laws to require the name you vote with to match your birth certificate. Is this 1825 or 2025? www.mlive.com/politics/202...

"Contracts to calibrate radiation detection equipment, to support cancer care and veterans cemetery management, among others were also targeted..." Just restating that for a sec here: -- calibrating radiation detection equipment -- cancer care -- veterans cemetaries www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

The Tablet, a prominent Jewish American magazine, is publishing straight up genocide apologia:

Yes. Do this!

In writing up the Wonder Woman cancellation, I decided to see what's up with the Nemesis System patent. Turns out WB will likely own it for another decade, so that's fun. venturebeat.com/games/wonder...

Just incredible reporting from @makenakelly.bsky.social once again on #DOGE, getting incredible detail on just what they are up to. This time? Modifying a piece of software that automates the mass firing of federal workers www.wired.com/story/doge-a...

From a guy who used to work there: Rachel is a remarkable person and the best TV news talent there is. If she says something is fucked up, it is. Getting rid of Joy, who dared to see through this fascism bullshit years ago and had the gall of occasionally being funny about it, is dumb.

When MSNBC canceled Joy Reid's show, it did even more than silence a great host—it silenced the next generation of Black media voices. So writes @elienyc.bsky.social, who knows a few things about Reid's talent for nurturing talent: She helped birth his TV career.

NEWS: In USDA, multiple people have been asked to report the names of LGBTQ employee resource group leaders to higher-ranking officials, according to interviews with workers and a document reviewed by Mother Jones. + similar in the Department of the Interior

Federal workers are being asked to report on colleagues who are involved in after-work groups for LGBTQ employees: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Janet Mills was elected the first woman DA in ME history. Elected 1st woman AG in ME. Won election to state House, reelected 3x. Then 1st woman Gov - won by 20 points. Then reelected in 2022 by 13 points. In other words, far more popular in ME than Trump will ever be.

Elon Musk is now trying to flip the balance of power on the top court in one of the country’s most important swing states. Read @ariberman.bsky.social on the very high stakes in Wisconsin and the Tesla founder's plot to buy the state supreme court.

New from 404 Media: a Musk ally has demanded administrative access to Notify.gov, a system that lets the government text the public. The access would give them large swathes of the publics' personal data too. A worker has resigned in protest rather than give access www.404media.co/musk-ally-de...

We just updated our Deepfakes Themes Explorer - An interactive tool for exploring fact-checks involving deepfakes and manipulated or out-of-context media and narratives, grouped based on their semantic similarity. what's a 80 year old promise among friends?

IMO, the Trump administration unilaterally freezing all funding for cancer research, in violation of two federal court orders, is a big deal.

UPDATE: A purge of experienced career staff has begun at NIH. The staff was just informed that Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak, who has worked at NIH for 25 years is "retiring." Grant funding remains frozen, in violation of two federal court orders.

“When queer kids are involved, suddenly my professionalism, training, and dedication count for nothing.” Take a look at my moving conversation with a doctor who treats trans kids and the realities that go into that care:

This is just one of thousands of harrowing stories told about the U.S. Government abandoning Americans abroad in the USAID shutdown. This is Benghazi times a million. 1/

Major cuts to programs that millions rely on, all to finance another round of tax cuts that will disproportionately benefit the wealthy and big corporations. Another reminder that we have socialism for the rich, harsh capitalism for the rest.

www.politico.com/news/2022/05... We’re really not doing too bad, as long as you don’t count black women. And this kind of garbage still has an approval rating of 53%!?!

Important to note that among the links in the statement below, a statement from the banking industry! bit.ly/4hTpWJ9

DC folks: Elizabeth Warren, Indivisible, the CFPB union and others rallying outside the CFPB building TODAY at 4:15

Why does the world's richest man want to gut the CFPB? Because it would shield him from having to follow financial laws to keep customers' money safe — and give him access to confidential records about his competitors. Follow the money.

I’m hearing National Archives in College Park MD is prepping for a visit from Elon. If you’re there and want to confirm, you can reach out anonymously to the signal in my bio.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged that Elon Musk’s government efficiency team, which has been tasked with slashing federal spending, has access to her agency’s data, including that of federal disaster aid recipients’ personal information, as part of an “audit” she welcomes.

The Israeli military has expanded its assaults in the occupied West Bank, killing an eight-month-pregnant Palestinian woman during an armed raid in the Nur Shams refugee camp.

The US-Mexico border faces a water crisis as #climatechange shrinks supplies and demand rises. A water quality expert explains how current laws fail to address the issue:

Elon Musk is viciously targeting USAID as retribution for USAID attempting to probe Starlink equipment.

This sounds like a bad movie it's so hard to believe but does seem to actually, possibly be happening that that core US government private information on US citizens and businesses and confidential govt operations is being carted off by unvetted malevolent possibly foreign actors

is it good or bad that a billionaire oligarch with close ties to foreign dictators is currently downloading the most sensitive information the us federal government has about its citizens to his own private servers?

If you think that trans people are getting our rights ripped away "because the left went too far," you're a moron. Everything happening to us today was written up and planned by the Family Research Council in 2015. The document is still public. It's all there. www.frc.org/transgender#...

According to a study by the survivor advocacy group Know Your IX, 40% of women students who report sexual violence to their schools wind up dropping out, transferring, or taking a prolonged leave of absence. 40%.

USAid website offline as Trump moves to put agency under state department

At @okfn.bsky.social, we have been thinking about and testing approaches for fast and low-cost ways to rescue datasets. www.404media.co/archivists-w... It is time to scale our efforts and decentralize critical data archiving.

This is what the government did with 120K+ Japanese Americans in 1942. I know. I was there in those camps.

A source sent me a copy of one of the anti-"gender ideology" memos being shared among federal departments today. This was sent to the Department of Health and Human Services. They have a 5PM deadline to take down "all outward facing media... that inculcate or promote gender ideology."

"Government Tech Workers Forced to Defend Projects to Random Elon Musk Bros. A recent high school grad & former Neuralink intern has joined meetings to review lines of code and other work history of career public servants, sparking chaos at a major government agency" www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

Behind Trump's chaos, I think there's something more insidious: Trump & his people appear to be using various strategies to shift federal resources away from traditionally Democratic-leaning areas, particularly cities, and instead prioritize communities that align more with his political base.
