I moved from California to the East Coast almost 10 years ago now and was already predisposed to hate cars and traffic, but God did I quickly become an evangelist for trains.

Still playing Baldur's Gate 3 and gotta be said, this thing probably has the best character development of any game I've ever played, and not sure it's close either. Phenomenal work.

Today when I suggested to a colleague that the number of women composers now performed was still very low, and he informed me that actually we were in danger of being "swamped" by them, THANK GOODNESS I had stats from Donne at my fingertips to show otherwise: donne-uk.org/research/

So now the govt is literally trying to outlaw concerts of non-white men composers— can we admit what our concerts of ONLY white men’s music has ALWAYS signified?

I have a really nontraditional path as a classical singer but for some weird reason I feel these pangs of guilt for working on learning a language that is NOT Italian, French, or German, or even a less common opera or art song language. But I suppose only making art that’s “useful” isn’t art at all…

I wish more people were talking about egg prices as less of a “muh egg prices!” thing and more about the fact that there is an organized egg cartel that is illegally price gouging and almost certainly illegally price fixing and reaping massive, gigantic profits.

Indeed Jesus has advice for such circumstances, involving cheeks and the turning of, but we all know Jesus is a weak and dangerous liberal

No, the mail is not “the least of our worries.” It’s a fucking important worry. It is the only postal service that delivers to every address. They are only provider of complete mail services for overseas military bases and provide free overseas PO boxes. They help prepare passport apps. Ship meds…

It is always wonderful to be reminded that people have been people for a very long time

Look at this new work of art I made yesterday. 😂 One thing that often happens is people get very confused about what is wuxia, xianxia, and xuanhuan due to lack of understanding about the terms. So I made this venn diagram to help. 😂

hi, cis folks! meet S.9. it's the senate sports ban for trans athletes—a big step to something making trump’s executive order federal law, which is much harder to undo. short call scripts for dem & GOP senators ⬇️. if you said you'd stand with trans folks, it's time.🧵

there is still some good news happening in the world

Coming very soon to my podcast : musicologist and pianist Dr. Samantha Ege talking about several of her projects including the fascinating @illinoispress.bsky.social “South Side Impresarios”.

alright you wanna know how to support trans people? hire them. It's REALLY hard already for visibly trans people to get jobs, even before this shit. Support places that have trans people working front of house, and make sure owners know that's part of why you're there.

My favorite fact about the NYC subway is that there are way more daily riders (about 4 million) than the number of people who fly in the US out of all airports every day (~2.5 million). The scale is hard to get a grasp on.

So often, ADHD hyperfixations are assumed to be detrimental. I imagine that they can be, but lately mine have been nothing but helpful. I don’t beat myself up as much as I used to. I’m not constantly consumed with guilt over my flaws and mistakes. I can survive these scary times we live in.

You literally cannot grow coffee in most of America

If you snitch to ICE, you would have also snitched on Anne Frank.

Lately I spend my days hyperfixating on my original characters… writing stories about them, imagining scenarios they would be in. That’s how I’m coping with the state of things right now.

Okay, here’s the deal: RIGHT NOW is the time for concrete, direct action. If you’re following me, it’s probably because you care about trans art and trans literature. The article below lays out my suggestions for dozens of concrete actions you can take to preemptively combat literary censorship.

We're going to make it through this 🩷💙 Let's turn our fear and rage into community action.

I know that the only solution is to KEEP FIGHTING ENDLESSLY especially as a very privileged person. But as a queer, disabled woman, I am also very, very tired and kind of just want to escape reality for a while…

I want to dump Facebook entirely because Zuck is a fascist and it’s been bad for my mental health in general. But I have to use it for my work as a musician and for communicating with some of my loved ones. Sigh.

thats ok im already fluent in anxiety

should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind and may this year not suck as much as the last five years combined

I really want to write more in the new year, and I keep thinking that I would like a composition mentor, and I WOULD like one, but what I really need are deadlines. Not self-imposed ones, but this “piece needs to be done by this day” deadlines. With deadlines, I accomplish magical things.

Christmas songs that hit just right: Wexford Carol Away in a manger (both versions) O come o come Emmanuel Es ist ein Ros entsprungen Ding dong merrily on high Ríu ríu chíu Spaseniye sodelal yesi/Salvation is created (I was lucky enough to get to do this in the original Church Slavonic)

I don't get the hate for Wonderful Christmastime. Most of the complaints about it (treacly, repetitive) are also true of nearly every other Christmas song

Don't mean to pointlessly dredge this up again, but found some quotes about a woman conductor from the 1850s, and they're by and large more progressive than American conservatives on X in 2024 www-sophie--drinker--institut-de.translate.goog/stollewerk-n...

Every kind of trans person is precious and worthy of love and protection

no lol

Just found out the Army is setting up recruitment booths at anime conventions--which is wild in & of itself--but they also got a Misato from Neon Genesis Evangelion cosplayer to lure in recruits The US Army is "Get in the fucking robot, Shinji"-ing weebs

The elegant art of turning my handheld into an emulating machine so that I can play all the games I saved up for but never had time to play when I was in high school and undergrad

I’m stuck on what to write next. Aside from my piece for voice and string quartet I think I want to write a Mag and Nunc for SATB and organ. But after that, then what? I guess I’d have to find a call for scores and use the deadline as a way of encouraging writing productively.

Bluesky right now

I have to admit, it’s great to laugh at the stupidity of outspoken misogynists but sometimes seeing how prevalent it is, how far fascism has spread and seeing all these dudes talking about how women should lose their rights and wishing for a submissive tradwife… it really just gets me down.

Me: “Hmm, maybe I should poke my head into my dead account on the Other Site and see what’s going on.” The Other Site: “Not only are women conductors a mistake, but women leaving the kitchen was a mistake. Women are stupid and should be ruled by their husbands.” Me: “…Never mind.” 🤡
