Came to Australia by boat. Believe in the land of the fair go. Want a Treaty with Australia's First Peoples. Love elections. I’m at Kiama on the land of the Wodi Wodi.

Just hope this gives Labor the balls to stand up to corporate Australia, esp the fossil fuel industry

Me too and I was super worried that Australians would buy into the Nuclear bullshit but this was a firm repudiation of that. I think Greens go back to some core issues like climate and focus on sending message that renewables are cheaper than gas etc and FF will raise prices. Something like that

Totally agree. All I’m trying to get at is that the Greens really need to sit down and look at how they navigate this. Australian politics is better for them but they really need to work hard at strategy rather than just bagging labor.

That’s my hope too. But equally I hope the Greens do better negotiating with the smart ALP instead of Green stubbornness.

Sorry, I don’t agree with you. The Greens could be a force for good, and achieve much, but fail by wanting it all their way and not accepting second best while continuing to argue for improvements.

If it marks the end of News being a major, toxic influence in our politics, then I think there’s real if cautious hope for a return of 2010 Albo policies to 2025 Albo.

PM will have the authority to pursue those policies that Lab was voted in for in its first term. More chance for good centrist policies not impeded by Green perfectionism.

Thanks for this optimistic post. When I think about it, there will be no need for Labour to do deals with Libs in House of Reps to get their agenda through the House. Lab will likely still need to negotiate in the Senate. But both Libs and Greens power will be much diminished.

I was at university and joined the Sydney University Regiment in the CMF. Signed up for 5 years and ticked the box saying if asked I’d go overseas. Paradoxically this meant you would NOT be called up and sent. Catch 22, the best catch there was. Especially as my marble came out of the barrel.

Andrew West on RN is fantastic. I’m surprised you don’t listen to him.

I loved #gunnawah. Reminded me of my school holidays at Kunanadgee on the Murray 8 miles out of Corowa in the 1950s and 60s. The smell of the river, very evocative.

The benefits of compulsory voting are so great that nutters like this are not even a statistical blip.

But will introduce some balance into a market that has been so skewed as to no longer be about providing renters somewhere to live.

Grandfathering negative gearing of investment properties, not allowing existing investors tax deductions when they leave properties empty - that is cannot demonstrate they are using the properties in a business like fashion with the intention of making a profit, shouldn’t tank values dramatically.

Never!

Yes it is grim. You would hope this would not happen here, but given the value of government work I would not be confident.

I agree. Was the article implying that we can’t comfortably blame it all on cats and foxes while ignoring habitat loss caused by human populations, cattle and sheep, horses, etc, etc.

The elephant in the room perhaps is the arrival of the colonists and how successive generations and the waves of migration which have followed.
