There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

We're hiring a new editor. Please share widely!

american masculinity is so amazing. caring about clothes as a man apparently makes you "gay" but our position on geopolitics totally depends on whether you wear a suit

Volodymyr Zelensky's Oval Office visit ended early when Donald Trump and JD Vance began angrily yelling at him. Here's why women like Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton are too emotional to be president.

“Americans should stand up and send their political leadership a clear message: We don’t support what you’re doing, so stop doing it in our name. We don’t want an alliance with Russia, and we don’t want a betrayal of Ukraine. And frankly, we are embarrassed.” kyivindependent.com/editorial-a-...

NEWS President Zelenskyy tells Fox News’ Bret Baier that he does not believe he owes President Trump an apology, as he didn’t do anything wrong.

Another way to see this: White westerners have long told Eastern Europeans how they are not part of “the West,” not “as civilized” as they are, etc. a long history of discrimination against EE as a way to prop up alleged western superiority, including ideas of “democracy”

NOAA Cuts Leave Wind Chimes As Sole Predictor Of Approaching Hurricanes

The far right conspiracy sphere has spent years painting Zelenskyy as a tyrannical and Satanic despot cranked to the gills on meth and running a New World Order slave state. Trump is going to tap into that image as an excuse for why it has to hand Ukraine over to Russia.

Today's newsletter is about that Washington Post story about the woman who bought Trump's "free IVF" lie from yesterday: www.readtpa.com/p/when-headl...

This is embarrassing on such an interstellar scale (also look at Rubio’s face)

This is an astonishing image. (Doug Mills, NYT)

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most drastic cut in spending by US consumers in three years last month despite decline in inflation.

Just got fired from being a freshman football coach, if you want to know what MAGA does to communities. They don’t care about what helps people, because the school is certainly not going to find an ex-NFL player willing to coach there at that level, they only care about trying to hurt people.

RFK Jr. Vows To Make Measles Deaths So Common They Won’t Be Upsetting Anymore

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of Americans applying for jobless benefits last week jumps to 242,000, a three-month high.

For the moment, I’m going to keep reading the Post — the news pages, anyway, for the same reason I read the WSJ news pages. I will not blame anyone if they choose not to. In the meantime I will point out that NPR/PBS and your local stations only answer ultimately to the public. Support them.

certain respectable, centrist pundits have said or implied that i'm basically hysterical about the idea that the trump administration is segregationist but then we get stories like this one. huh, wonder what ideological perspective might explain this decision.

the main effect of firing 800,000 people — in addition to debilitating the federal government — would be to plunge the US economy into a recessionary spiral that rivaled the Great Recession

These stories amount to "the left was so annoying about pronouns or liberals made people feel so guilty about plastic straws they had no choice but to get on board with the second coming of the Third Reich and the destruction of the planet."

Pulitzer Feeling Increasingly Out Of Place In Washington Post Office

I wrote about why work requirements and ideas of widespread fraud by secretly “able” Medicaid recipients will harm disabled Americans back in 2018. (Before WaPo was a joke.) 🗃️ www.washingtonpost.com/news/made-by...

Using my “personal liberties” to repost this

Here's my new WaPo op ed: abortion rights are a personal liberty and represent the right of patients to access the freedom of the medical market. Done.

“Freedom is ethical—it minimizes coercion” is a statement, but it certainly isn’t one that squares with a vast swath of American history. Unless, of course, you’re only concerned with “freedom” as defined and exercised by those with tremendous wealth against those who lack it.

Looking forward to all the WaPo op-eds about the personal liberties of controlling one’s own reproduction, determining one’s own gender expression, finding one’s own definition of sexual satisfaction, choosing one’s own definition of family…

Given that Bezos just did a full takeover of @washingtonpost.com and now it can only report that America and money are great--today is a great day to cancel if you have it, you check to make sure you aren't paying for a forgotten subscription.

Yes! The people defending this as trolling don’t understand what trolling is. “Libs will get offended by ANYTHING these days” only works if the thing you’re doing isn’t offensive!

My latest episode for @dig-history.bsky.social comes from a deep well of WHY THE F*CK. In this edition, we're talking about the Lavender Scare, Parts 1 (1940s-1970s) and 2 (2010s-now). digpodcast.org/2025/02/23/i...

Our latest ep, written with righteous anger by @aearls.bsky.social. A hard look at the Lavender Scare in light of the recent flurry of bigoted and unjust executive orders. This one isn’t bleeped, but if you want to use it in class, a clean version is on our website. 🗃️ digpodcast.org/2025/02/23/i...

We won’t penalize you for researching gender, in fact, we’ll reward you for it.

I don't think we're talking enough about the fact that the pressure to remove DEI from science means women die.

Finishing a terrible week on a lovely note: page proofs for #dolessharm. We did good @cethompson.bsky.social
