I started cutting my spending Nov 7th, and by January, I've cut out basically all non essential items. Haven't bought a single thing from Amazon, Lowes, or target, and dropped Walmart for Kroger and Costco.
Yup, this year is a total reevaluation of where we spend our money. Oh you donated to the inauguration that wasn't? Went all anti-DEI? Partnered with Starlink? It has basically turned into spending less overall which is a good thing during all this uncertainty anyway
Totally agree. Things were bad for many before Jan20 and getting worse. We still fortunately have our jobs, but we don't know how long. My wife's employer is doing layoffs every few days as they lose contracts. No end in sight. I work in a space that is likely to be gutted by the brain worm guy.
If it’s true that America is a consumer driven economy, and it is, this is a massive recession warning. Watch unemployment rocket up. The fed will likely need to rethink its rate cut plan.
Declining prices would be deflation. Declining inflation means it still went up but less quickly. And since inflation is measured across a basket of goods even if food is up a lot other things may be been close to flat which brought the basket up slower than the most expensive items in it.
"Unemployment remains low, stock mkts high & the rate of inflation has slowed. But many Am. still wrongly believe the US is in a recession.
About 43% of R's believe that the US is in a recession, down from 67% in May last year... Ind's, 53% compared with 46% now, Dems (49% now v. 50% in May)
There is absolutely NO CHANCE that over half of American families have enough money saved to cover 3 months of expenses. No chance. It's probably more like 20%
Funny how that works !
When every American is living in fear of having their jobs & income threatened or terminated & not knowing what these evil MFers will do to US tmw, the next day & the day after that ! People start buying, only what they absolutely need !
PERIOD !
Inflation is an abstract concept for most people. Biden made a mistake by focusing too much on it. But it’s the actual price that people can see at the store that influences them.
I purposely tried to buy in advance anything I could foresee needing prior to Jan 20 to not contribute to his economy and will continue only buying necessities
The problem with this logic is that it’s not HIS economy, it’s OUR economy. You’re punishing store owners and their employees more than you’re punishing Trump
THIS IS THE WAY and what I've been saying! One day boycotts won't do much. They know we'll spend the day before and the day after. Only when we stop spending on non- necessities LONG TERM will trump's buddies feel it and reject him.
I made sure I took care of some of my larger purchases before inauguration day, too. Mostly because I knew his tariffs would jack up the price but now I'm seeing it as the only effective way to resist. Trump only cares about what billionaires think of him.
deleted META and Shitter apps, will not shop amazon again, cancelled a trip to Austin - no way I am going to Texas ever, have not will not spend any money other than small businesses and costco. Protest poster materials on hand and RESIST tshirts arrived…I AM READY
The #blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the convicted felon, his Muskrats, his Project 2025 goons, and #Republicans who wholeheartedly back all of them.
The Press HAS to stand up to these deranged individuals. All it takes is for one reporter to say "That's a lie" each time Oompa Loompa answers their question with one. (Which is almost everytime) This guy and his ppll lie quicker than a cat can lick its aah.
They are trying to stay in to be able to document what is happening. If they all take a stand, they all get kicked out and the Red Press takes over the narrative.
Bad for the economy - we’re consumer-driven. Low consumption, higher savings and lower confidence all point to a recession and unemployment. In this political environment that could be deadly for those who fall through the holes Trump and Musk are blowing through our social safety nets.
I’m sorry but I think a boycott is the only way to express our collective outrage at the destruction of our country. I have zero interest, confidence, or financial capacity really, to spend anywhere beyond my basic needs.
These numbers don’t reflect a boycott, they reflect gutted confidence and anticipated persistent high prices. It would be a wake-up call to a normal administration. Not this one.
That’s even more meaningful that a (conscious) boycott. It says that those people do not have faith in this administration to lead. I never want suffering. I just want all these frauds to be exposed for who they really are.
Is that indicative of a lack of confidence and fear? Perhaps people, not knowing where we are headed, are keeping as much money as they can "just in case". They may not know what that case is, but things are so chaotic they are mentally exhausted and are trying to prepare for a frightening future.
Gee, it’s almost like in a capitalist country who’s economy is based on consumption it’s a bad thing for a bunch of your consumers to lose their jobs and not have money to consume 🙄
Yes it is. They have largely succeeded already. The USA as we've known it our whole lives doesn't even exist anymore. We'll be crazy lucky if we can get it back without major violence
Sorry, US history says violence is inevitable.
We study enough of US history in Australia to know where this ends.
Fast and clinical or slow brutal and destructive, are your only choices
People do have the power. We just have to use it. We also have to remember that the economic sanctions WE put on the corporate oligarchs & fascists is a long, hard slog. It took 18 months for the Montgomery Bus Boycotts to have an impact. This will not happen overnight. Dig in. Stay strong.
Yeah, outside of essentials, I'm not spending extra money. All the small businesses around me are run by super-Trumpers. So I'm not even tempted to support local businesses.
Hey, no problemo. After Clarence "Uncle Tom" Thomas and Tim "Yes Massa" Scott finish their Judas imitations, there's gonna be plenty black farmers back in them old cotton fields.
At the end of the day, they are not the harbingers for what is to come. They are a few race and class traitors, amongst many. So I’m confused why we are focused on chastising the minorities? Or is that normal to y’all?
When the Confederate-Cow Party reestablishes "The Old South" and slavery, Tim and Uncle Tom will have played the roles of enablers. Do you think you can grasp the fuck I'm talking about now?
I’ve saved so much money since the election that I now qualify for concierge service at my bank. Imagine that. The widow of a social worker with a disabled daughter.
I was always good at living on a tight budget due to our circumstances but watch me now. I won’t be contributing to Trump’s economy.
We’ve deeply cut our discretionary spending. And when we do want to use discretionary money it’s at locally owned businesses. We’re also trying to use cash more often so credit card companies aren’t getting their payday either.
Hmm. Seemed like things were set to continue improving until trump decided to do the bidding of musk and the rest of his masters to distort and crash the economy.....
Trump has made it clear he hates us all and resents us all, and musk just thinks all humans are expendable, especially lazy Americans who he clearly thinks are undeserving of any consideration as free individuals. We’re a faceless rabble of complainers who need to be managed, and culled.
We started boycotting fascist corporate sponsors and fascist friendly anti-DEIA companies 1/20/25…
The Republicans can’t be bothered to listen to us when we call, write or speak out at town halls (they’ll use private security to arrest you if you protest).
If enough of us participate in targeted BOYCOTTS - we become a billionaire…
To any investors/GOP that may see this, we will not participate - no data and no dollars - when fascists are dismantling the Republic. And we will hold apologists/co-conspirators accountable.
Maybe I'm an idiot but to me it looks obvious.
Trade deficit widens.
Wholesale inventory goes up
Retail goes down
Spending down
Savings up.
Everyone is storing up for bad times ahead of price rises due to tariffs.
Good work comrade donald.
Yes, but the poster didn’t provide evidence or context for either claim. We are in an era of misinformation in which we can’t trust without verifiable sources. He could link an article or something.
I didn’t know expecting context in posts from journalists could be so triggering! Sorry I made you so grumpy lil guy! Hope you can turn that frown upside down soon!
I spend less and will continue to spend less because we live in an oligarchy heading toward being a Christian NATIONALIST authoritarian country. I will not consciously give one penny toward the nazi uprise.
I cut my spending (except at Costco) and new investment money is only going to buy T bills, (ala Buffet), not stock, as I think the market will go lower, although I am not selling.
I was hoping to buy a house this year, but after narrowly escaping a round of layoffs last month I'm just hoping to still have a job by the end of the year.
I too was hoping to buy a home - although I didn't want to do under this Admin. The inflation is going to make it even more impossible to boot. I hope your job stays secure! I'm worried about losing my health ins. BF's SSDI, Health, SNAP. :(
Fed firings, threats of mass deportations, and shopping boycotts may have a chilling effect, I imagine. On the bright side (initially for markets and then consumers) this may lower inflation even further, triggering interest cuts. Volatility and economic uncertainty are still sticking factors.
Funniest thing I've seen in a long time was yesterday when a magat posted to other magats to remember to "shop til you drop" today 😅 I mean, they couldn't afford eggs the last three years, but ok.
Warren Buffet sold a ton of his stock portfolio in December after the election; also sold Berkshire Hathaway’s stake in two S&P 500 index funds!
He’s sitting on ~$500 billion in CASH.
Unlike all the talking heads on CNBC, (many of whom went bankrupt over the years),The Oracle of Omaha is never wrong
I don't quite know what Warren's strategy is for laddering, but I imagine that he uses a mixture of three-month notes with some six-month and twelve-month notes.
As of August 2024, Berkshire Hathaway owned $234.6 billion in short-term T-bills, which is more than the Federal Reserve. (Google AI) There can be longer term holdings, bank notes, short terms left on corporate bonds etc.
M1 is basically cash and demand deposits in banks. There are also M2 and lots of other measures of cash/low risk holdings. Many are linked on that page.
You’re citing his personal net worth.
I’m citing Berkshire Hathaway’s cash position which is now over $500 billion.
It was $325 billion at the end of Q3 in 2024, before the December sell off.
Receipts:
Ok. My mistake. Above you said he sold his portfolio and he’s sitting on 500B and you cited no sources. He personally is not sitting on that amount of cash. That’s why I was confused. But the point you were making is that some large funds are going to cash. Sorry for the pedantry on my end.
Carl this is the tip of the iceberg. Wait till all the deportations, layoffs, cancelled contracts hit the economy. Musk and copresident trump have ignited a fire to burn down the economy.
Laying off hundreds of thousands of people causes them to have no money to spend. There has been a recession under every Republican Administration since Nixon, so this was very predictable.
Look, I'm a shopper. I love to buy new stuff. But my spending habits changed completely this month - no Target, no Amazon, etc. I basically pared down to Costco, Trader Joe's, Safeway, and CVS. Groceries and essentials only, cut back on restaurants, fewer coffee shops.
Ours is mostly Costco, TJ, or farmers markets. Target has been harder to wean off of than Amazon, honestly, because there are no other department stores like it anymore.
But I started back in November, and I can honestly say it’s been a good thing. No more impulse buys.
same! and the bonus for me is that my little act of rebellion is saving me money! capitalism the way the tRump administration applies it is downright disgusting to me😡
Start as a Recession, then if trump admin isn’t kicked out a full depression will happen. Bank collapse, unemployment rate escalation, housing market collapse all by beginning of fourth quarter.
Good. Save whatever you can; we are entering brackish waters.
Today our family also participated in the economic boycott. At lunch hour I surveyed 4 stores here that normally would be crowded at that hour especially on a sunny 50 degree day.Target, Chik Fi La, Panera & CVS They were deserted.
Going to cash and low risk funds ASAP. Not buying much. I'll take 4 % and not lose half my $ before enough of the country and some on CNBC wake up. A stable economy depends on a stable government. We're losing that.
Very wise. In uncertain times, "What is Warren Buffet doing?"
ANS: In the last 4 months, he has liquidated $350 billion in shares into cash and 3 month T-bonds.
He knows a crash is just around the corner.
He sold all shares in US auto-makers
I refuse to participate. I will not shop at amazon, target or walmart ever again. I cancelled my Washington Post account, I will not vacation in a red state, our vacations for the foreseeable future will either be in New England or Europe. I’m out.
Come to California for vacation! It's beautiful here and everything you could want - amazing weather, beaches, mountains, snow, lakes, Hollywood, San Francisco, and more. 🏖️
i quit all Meta (easy), never bought any muskian shit. Bezos was tougher - I quit Amazon (also easy), but have the stupid Blink security subscription and also an Amazon credit card and the Fire TV. Nipping those for good this week.
It is a bit of an adjustment. I used Amazon quite a bit, but right after the election I quit my subscription and I deleted the app. Once I did that it really was much easier.
They occasionally use them to send it. The order went through eBay or direct or whatever. Still hurts Bezos more than ordering from Amazon. And he doesn’t get the cut
We still have prime for a few more weeks, but have not ordered anything off Amazon since Christmas aside from a $6 dryer part that I needed and couldn’t get locally. You actually end up saving a lot when you can’t buy random crap as easily.
Same here. I still have an Amazon account but I am only using it in an emergency. I had been spending thousands per year there. I think most of us could taper our spending at problematic corporations, even if it's not all or nothing.
Me too. And trying to find a state we can retire in that's not red but still affordable means we may end up stuck here. Europe looks increasingly promising
We were already being frugal (kid starting college this year), but now I'm opting out as much as possible. Costco, local grocery or farmers market, and thrift only (unless impossible, but then I'm still careful about where I buy)
Exactly. We have to stop acting like we have no power. The only way to deal with an oligarchy is to starve them. They want to starve the poor, we need to ensure those of us who do have disposable income starve the rich.
I cancelled my Prime account too. The west coast is beautiful, as are Colorado and New Mexico. All blue states. I, too, am boycotting all red states, especially Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas.
Usually, we vacation in California, Oregon, or Washington state. We used to visit the Florida beaches, but that has been over for years now.
This year we have a trip planned to visit family and friends in Germany and Austria .
But I’m done giving my money to people that support this stupidity.
Our whole economy is a house of cards, based largely on consumer spending, not producing anything of value. Its why we sit thru ads on TV, piped in when we pump gas, on social media, (except bluesky!!) Insane!
Yes, come to Europe as long as we are not yet in ruins bc of the next major war that will come because US is letting us down & colaborates with Russia..."Do the hell what ever you want"...Trump keeps his promise - deadly for us Europeans & deadly for any chance to rebuild US power
Oh dear, wake up: we don't have 4 years, not in Europe, not in the US...EVERYTHING will be lost by then.If Americans don't get rid of this fascist regime soon the free world will be killed...do you unterstand what's at stake, do you? I don't wanne die bc of your fucking madness - do something!
The idea that we will get rid of Trump in MAGA before his term is up is not based in reality. I’m sorry, but the media, the wealthy are propping him up. We have no mechanisms for new elections in the US.
others risk their lives to defend their freedom and you're telling me you're powerless? You're just doing too well, you don't feel the urgency...you haven't even tried to resist
Same on all here...New England is beautiful! (and liberal,Generally LGBTQ friendly, Woman's and civil rights still in place.) for anyone who isn't familiar with it and is looking for a blue state area to vacation in!
More power to you, I support boycotting places and businesses that prop the fascists up, but this is an across-the-board decline in spending, across most of america. People are freaked out by what's going on, and that uncertainty makes them less likely to spend money. ANY money, on ANYTHING.
We have given far too much power to these men, and large corporations. It’s time for a reset.
Do I need those new blinds, area rug or cool new glasses. Nope. The only way I feel that I can hurt Trump and his administration other than voting against him, is by not shopping.
Also if you want it bad enough you can get the materials and DIY it yourself through online resources. You can personalize it then and now you have a new hobby/skill.
And check out your local makerspace (there is usually a membership fee) but they probably have everything you need to design and build something new or repair something broken.
I have also had good luck with our local buy nothing group. It’s been a great way to pass along unwanted items and acquire new to me stuff. (It’s one of the reasons I keep my FB account)
I think we should all make better choices with our funds. We’ve allowed this nonsense to go on for too long. These men have gained far to much influence over our lives
Been cutting back on anything but essentials since January 20th. As a civil servant under constant threat of losing my job, I feel it's my patriotic duty to do my part to hit the Trump regime and those who support it where it hurts 🤑
I have never shopped at Walmart or Target, and I also do volume purchasing for a charity organization, so it can be inconvenient. I only started shopping at Amazon because there was no other option for certain items.
Not super useful for smaller local businesses but @goodsuniteus.bsky.social helps me stay informed when I’m making a buying decision. "No companies with negative scores" has been working well for me
My mom, a lifelong enthusiastic shopper on a government pension, is now saving as much money as she can because she’s terrified someone is going to fuck with her retirement. I wonder how she got that idea?
Not to be apocalyptic but, beyond then economic forces, the underlying transactional systems have all been compromised and there’s no one left to fix it (a Sisyphean feat in itself). It will take trillions of dollars and a generation to rebuild from scratch - but we’re already there.
$36 Trillion in debt.....a current FY deficit of $1.8 Trillion.
There have been cities that have filed Ch 9 and cut pensions.......cut.......when a pvt biz with a defined benefit pension goes bankrupt the entire pension goes away.
Govt employees have much more protection than pvt industry workers
No changes so far. This is just one illustration of why many ostensibly middle-class people might be reluctant consumers right now. Consumer confidence tanks when people are threatened
My stepdad worked his entire career at SSA and retired about 15 years ago with a federal pension that also supports my retired mom. They're Florida Republicans. I don't even thing it's occurred to them yet that their retirement income could be snatched.
so am I, I saved up to fix my house, and I said I was gonna wait til the election was over to see if I should save it, so now I have $ but I'm afraid to spend it.
Don’t be afraid, be empowered. Spend only what is necessary and keep the rest in a local credit union. This economy is 70% consumer spending. Especially be mindful of avoiding robber baron companies…starve them of what they love most.
I can't switch to a credit union because they will prob fuck my SS deposit. But I'm not afraid of much after being shot and living in a shack in Appalachia when I grew up. I never buy from big business if I can help it. 💪
It’s ok- he’s right: if I was posting for sympathy it would be pretty tone-deaf. I wasn’t, but the point stands. This is about consumer confidence, not suffering
I have empathy for your mom. I feel this platform is exactly right for you to share her current situation and concerns…not at all a tone deaf post on your part.
I looked at his profile and I think he’s probably pretty genuine. I’m glad you’re sharing your mom’s story and I hope everything is ok for her and all the federal pensioners!
Absolutely he makes a good point. There are going to be people spending less because they no longer have money. People unjustly fired & suffering. These numbers don’t reflect that though because it’s too early- these numbers are about people with money suddenly not feeling confident to spend it
I’m so terrified of the “too early” aspect of all of this. I think there are a lot of people (my family in a deeply red and isolated part of Texas for one) who do not even know what’s coming.
👆 While I appreciate today’s boycott, one day doesn’t move the market. Protracted action does. If you are late to the revolution and just starting today keep it going everyday to make real inroads. Stop all discretionary spending. Move your portfolio. Your $ is your loudest voice. #stopthespend
I would never give nor receive financial advice on social media. Consult your financial adviser. I am close to retirement and that factored into my reallocation.
You have to copy the link for the article to appear. FB, Apple, & some of these aren’t actually posting the articles… There’s no error msg.
As a minority I voted. Now I’m voting w/my feet. If you don’t respect me & my community, then you don’t get my money.
Fill your cart with things you would normally buy, then sign out. Unsubscribe from all marketing emails and delete the app from your phone --- these are all metrics that companies care about: unsubscribes, abandoned carts, and uninstalling apps will get their attention.
You're possibly going to get so many notifications about that abandoned cart. I've never received the deluge of notifications that I'm getting right now for an item I put in my cart yesterday while I compared prices.
I nuked 40+ subscribe and saves on Amazon this past November. The deluge in notifications (I was getting about 20+ a day to my spam email account initially) stiffened my resolve to continue not buying, though.
So it was just an algorithm taking note. But Bezos can still go fuck himself.
as long as it's stuff you would normally purchase, they'll take it serious. If you shoved a bunch of big ticket items you never buy, they dismiss it as a fluke. A customer not making a normal purchase is more effective.
When you think about it, those newsletters and emails are just ads, buy buy buy, spend spend spend. Why even have that clogging up your inbox? For maybe one coupon a year that's worth it? I know you got better things to do that sort email.
Yes! I uninstalled every app on my phone that could be used to spend money, even Kindle. And I hit a bunch of Google's stuff while I was at it. I also signed out of every single shopping site to make it clear I was intentionally not spending money today, but I don't know if that's effective.
(Explanation: our state wised up to the fact that they lost gas taxes because of electric vehicles a few years back. So now they have a different rate for yearly registration for electric vehicles. 🤷♀️)
Eh. Honestly it’s more of a “Oh, no! We’re seeing shortfalls on fuel taxes! Now how will we have a balanced state budget???”
While our state is pretty EV friendly otherwise, we don’t have state income taxes to pad the books, so they have to make that up with other taxes or fees. Extra fees it is. 🤷♀️
Decline in inflation? Like prices are going up slower? Maybe that’s because they can’t just keep going up at the prodigious pace they’ve been soaring at forever
This is presidential appeasement with some truth sprinkled in!!! Yet, this is the same news outlets who was barred from covering the WH!!!
FUCK OUTTA HERE!!
Well when your administration is nothing short of a fascist coup, it puts a damper on spending cuz we’re all trying to figure out which country to flee to.
Most people with even half a brain are hunkering down to weather the catastrophe they see looming just beyond the horizon. If you think the collapse of the economy was bad under "W" or first term Trump, hold onto your hats and ass because that may be all you have left before this shitshow is over.
Maybe your network could stop supporting the anti-American, pro-democracy Trump cult and then we could get some actual adults in place to manage this nations economy. It’s not a fucking joke and so long as your network and others continue to support these goons, our country will suffer
From the article:
"Americans cut their spending by 0.2% in January from the previous month, the Commerce Department said Friday, likely in part because of unseasonably cold weather."
We’ve gone into full “every penny accounted-for” mode.
Some wheel is going to come off somewhere. You can’t turn this many knobs and switches with a global economy this fast, especially with consumer and national debt at these levels.
According to my bank I spent 8% less in January. I don’t know what this ridiculous government is going to do next so need to have my savings. Will be pulling some cash out in case banks get compromised. Hate that I am thinking this way.
I mean, with the threat of tariffs looming, I made a list and bought basically every low-to-mid ticket price item I could think of that my household might need to buy or replace in the next 4 years before inaugration. I'm not fucking around with paying 200% markup on furnace filters or linens
Postponing travel, cutting back on spending except for essentials. Grateful that none of my kids works for the federal government. Concerned that tariffs will increase costs for electricity and gas. Worried that as we cut back on spending it will negatively impact small locally owned businesses.
telling people not to do their taxes is largely counter-productive. I'd imagine most people have *already* paid their taxes. Telling them not to file them just means they don't get a refund if they're due (which gives Trump more money not less)
Not surprised. There are government workers getting laid off. Over 26K laid off in 2025 in tech and telecom sectors. Now tariffs will raise prices. It's a very uncertain figure so consumers are locking down for a bad ride... https://www.capacitymedia.com/article-tech-layoffs-continue-into-2025
But what happened to Trump's promise that he will be great for the economy? That he will lower the price of groceries on day one? That he will build a wall and Mexico will pay for it? That you'll be as rich as him if you pay his "Trump University"?

Thanks Elon! Thanks trhmp!
It's almost like people are hunkering down for the worst.
There have been cities that have filed Ch 9 and cut pensions.......cut.......when a pvt biz with a defined benefit pension goes bankrupt the entire pension goes away.

Lumber may skyrocket if the CA tariffs are placed.
