The Trump administration plans to eliminate the research arm of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, close all weather and climate labs and eviscerate its budget along with several other NOAA offices, according to internal documents obtained by CNN.

An actual opposition party would be all over TV for the next 10 days reminding people of this tariff bullshit, letting people know that Congress has the power to end this, and getting to work on doing just that. Instead all that exists is the Democratic party so none of this will happen.

Don’t remember where I saw this library flyer a while back but it’s great

Can we get more of this? “The Japanese American National Museum will ‘scrub nothing,’ Fujioka said, and instead will highlight the importance of DEI. “Our community is based on diversity, equity is guaranteed to us in the Constitution, and inclusion is what we believe in,” Fujioka said.

The Trump admin is dismantling Freedom of Information Act offices. Then the offices send out emails like, “Hello, the FOIA office has been placed on admin leave and is unable to respond to any emails.” The lengths this admin will go to ensure zero transparency with the American people is astounding.

Naalehu, HI So proud of my community

I've always found it strange that some people don't understand that the choir ALSO needs to hear the sermon. The "preaching to the choir" thing has done a number on a lot of people. The choir ALSO needs uplifting in fact it's extremely important to ensure the continuation to the church.

The only ethical thing to do right now if you're the official who has control over these records knowing what we know about how DOGE operates and what they're planning to do with them is destroy them and take the prison sentence

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive. No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief. 1/ A 🧵 to explain his plan and how we fight back.

Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: 🧵A woman (20s?) is walking along a quiet, tree lined street just after sunset. Her yellow T-shirt vivid in the light of the street lamps. A sleek tabby cat loping amiably at her side. Crickets chirping in the night air. (1)

At this very moment, it’s getting a little tense in Tbilisi - for the first time in months. Protesters are numerous, angry, and fed up. ALL EYES ON GEORGIA! #GeorgiaProtests

DON’T THROW AWAY YOUR SHOT Because the erosion of democracy happens gradually, the opposition has ample opportunities to fight back. In the United States, opposition groups are not without resources.

Pushback works, part gazillion: "Here are the facts: DOGE moved forward with plans to close multiple field offices. Then, without public notice or explanation, they reversed their plans. Now they are trying to pretend like they were never planning to close the offices." popular.info/p/how-the-so...

Organizing for improving the live of workers doing demanding, physical jobs since the age of 14, Lelo Juarez is the kind of community-minded person every nation should cherish. USA Disappeared Tracker supports Lelo's release.

There are 21 year olds who are alive today who don't have any significant memories of life and politics pre-Trump. There are also 30 year olds alive today who have no memory of life and politics pre war on terror. We literally have generations of youth who have normalized madness.

Some have extremely short memories. As most of you on here lived through the past 15 years of uprisings led by Black people and others & saw the state bring TANKS into city streets, TEAR GAS folks for days on end, disappear leaders, frame them for crimes they didn't commit etc... & yet here you are.

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century." snyder.substack.com/p/twenty-les...

Note to editors and producers: If an executive order demands action that is illegal or outside of the president’s authority, then you should not describe it as ordering something. You should say it seeks to achieve some outcome and then note it is illegal or beyond the power of the president.

the U.S. government is targeting legal noncitizen scholars, not on the basis of any wrongdoing, but as part of a larger assault against an educated public.

A tiny, easy thing you can do: wherever you’re traveling, buy the local paper and boost the news of how fascism is trickling down and how everyday people are pushing back. From today’s Caledonian-Record of St. Johnsbury, VT.

By the way, see a lot of folks confused by how ICE can call themselves “police” and basically lie to targets. I wrote (almost seven years ago now, how time flies!!) about how this is also completely legal and in fact is a specifically-sanctioned tactic the agency has

I think a lot of folks who are not high profile enough to regularly receive hate mail and death threats do not really appreciate how serious that shit is, esp in a country where guns are wildly easy to acquire and mass shootings are so common as to be normal. So yeah likely targets are leaving

Convict leasing is alive and well in Mississippi apparently. It used to be the job of the FBI and DOJ to investigate and prosecute such racist abuses at the local level, but now they’re laser focused on protecting Tesla dealerships for the world’s richest man. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/27/u...

Closing rural post offices will do the same thing that closing rural schools has done: Empty out rural towns. Why? To sell off farmland for rock bottom prices to the oligarchs. Water and mineral rights and CAFOs polluting with impunity. It’s been the plan for decades.

When scholars of authoritarianism and fascism leave U.S. universities because of the deteriorating political situation here, we should really worry.

The President does not have the constitutional or statutory authority to dictate the content of voter registration forms. This EO is an incredibly dangerous power grab. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

1. The 1Q 2025 Anti-Trans Risk Assessment Map is complete, and there are big changes. I have issued a "Do Not Travel" for transgender foreign citizens. Risk has deteriorated broadly across the US. Transgender youth see changes in previously safe states. Subscribe to support my journalism.

Somebody needs to give the Wayback Machine folks a Presidential Medal of Freedom when all of this over. I'm being dead serious.

President Trump Issues Dangerous Executive Order That Would Shift to Presidency More Power Over the Conduct of Federal Elections and Potentially Disenfranchise Millions of Voters electionlawblog.org?p=149153

The Justice Department says Trump derives his authority to deport migrants without due process from “Article II and the mandate of the electorate,” so it has no obligation to provide further details of the operation to Boasberg. “Trump won the election so everything he does is legal,” in DOJ speak.

literally every day is going to provide more evidence that the "let's provide some votes for the least bad trump nominees out of respect for the presidency" was a boneheaded strategy. any idiot could have told senate democrats that any vote for any of these people was going to make them look bad.

I’ve long believed that the American media would be more clear-eyed about the rise and return of wanna-be dictator Donald Trump if it was happening overseas in a foreign country. Here’s my take on how this week should have been covered by the US media: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/trump-musk...

NEW: Elon Musk’s X has suspended accounts of Turkish opposition groups, suppressing footage of anti-government protests. So, best we share all the footage we can here! This was last night’s massive demo against Erdogan’s government, which follows the arrest of his rival Ekrem İmamoğlu. 🇹🇷 #Turkey

Doonesbury gets it.

“Elias Law Group will not be deterred from fighting for democracy in court. There will be no negotiation with this White House about the clients we represent or the lawsuits we bring on their behalf."

I don’t see how, unless our entire profession stands shoulder-to-shoulder in unity, we successfully push back against this effort to break our profession and our democracy. Cowering & compromising won’t work. He is attacking us for the success of our work. www.whitehouse.gov/presidential...

If I could speak to the heads of big law firms, I would ask: Is the risk of losing some clients worth betraying your oath to the rule of law? To everyone nodding but refusing to take a stand, I say: You are ignoring Martin Niemöller’s message. It is you that Martin Luther King Jr. was condemning.

This is what’s destroying America, not Trump. The culture of capitulation. Trump won a pathetic popular vote victory - far less than Biden four years ago - and our institutions are acting like he had a huge mandate to void the Constitution.

being an indie bookseller in the helltimes has felt both very stable and very stabilizing, and part of me wishes everyone could be on my side of the counter for a little while, because I think it would help some of you be a little less cynical and doomy right now. so here is my VERY anecdotal data:

This moment is quickly peeling away from precedent. People are being sent to prison camps on ethnicity alone, being stripped of legal status, accused of “terrorism” on ethnicity & protected speech. This isn’t an immigration anymore, it’s not deportation. It’s something else entirely.

It's the time of year when I see articles telling folks to put pet fur out for bird nesting. The Cornell ornithology lab does not recommend this! Flea/tick treatments & shampoos can be toxic, long fur can entangle chicks, etc. There are much better alternatives: www.allaboutbirds.org/news/providi...

I helped build a government AI system. DOGE fired me, rolled the AI out to the whole agency, and implied the AI can do my job and the jobs of the others they've fired. It can't. But, what DOGE accidentally revealed about themselves in the process is fascinating. 🧵

I walked by a Tesla today and this is what was written on the window

The Department of Education, among other things, is what funds special education for children with disabilities. Trump’s executive order will hurt kids and parents in virtually every school district in the country.

Congestion pricing is an unqualified triumph. One of the most immediately, strikingly successful public policies of my lifetime.

Remember when people used to say the warnings about Trump were alarmist? He’s now explicitly saying US citizens who damage private property that’s linked to one of his oligarch cronies will be sent to prisons in El Salvador.
