The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

Happy Valentine's!

ITS SHUT THE FUCK UP FRIDAY This is a very important message you should share with the people in your life that may be hitting the streets to protest: never talk to the police! WATCH:

This is officially my horizontally longest image to date, depicting some of the earliest complex animals on the planet from 565 to 505 million years ago and how they changed over time. Thank you to @egmitchell.bsky.social and Steve Pates for trusting me with this gargantuan task! #Art #SciArt

ohh, this looks fun. 1 like = 1 piece of unsolicited but sincere, field-tested advice

This is just the beginning. Cis people, contact your reps. Do not fucking reply to my trans ass right now to tell me why you can't or won't do this one goddamned thing for trans people, just contact your Representative.

Hello new fountain pen folks! Unlike Reddit, conversations about the "political" end of fountain pens aren't "moderated" out of existence for "civility" purposes, here. It usually winds up being me dropping into folks' mentions delivering the unfortunate news about Noodler's...

Every time I see this I think, "this is the energy I should project when talking about my work"

Meep Meep Meep. (a.k.a. the world is on fire, but I'm over here making a muppet lamp for sanity)

Ah, yes, the legendary Badlands Tweets!

A lot of folks are giving up in advance. Capitulating before a single skirmish. Well, not this old warrior. I’ve seen much worse from the U.S. government in my day. I’m concerned for our country, but not a bit scared of these miscreants. I’m ready to do my part. Who’s with me?

Today we got a call about this amazing fish. @karlycohen.bsky.social and a local fisherman collaborated on retrieval. The king of the salmon, Trachipterus altivela, is a mesopelagic predator. They do wash up occasionally. This is the second I have seen in 30 years in the San Juans.

Honored to receive the Gans Award this year! I look forward to chatting with you all about fish skulls at #SICB2025! naturalsciences.rice.edu/news/kory-ev...

I updated one of my favourite comics for my neighbour who's going through some shit right now. You can get it on merch at Threadless: https://effinbirds.threadless.com/designs/oh-my-god-what-the-fuck-usa/mens/t-shirt/regular?variation=front&color=heather_royal

Literally we have safety regulations because people literally— *Literally*— bled and died for them.

And, per a request, here's my Rules for Twitter, which I would think apply here, with the addition: Block anybody you like. Bye, now.

This is really lovely.

Thrilled to share: out in @natureportfolio.bsky.social (!) just in time for Thanksgiving, the dinosaurian history of how your turkey does the twist. Fibular reduction enabled mid-drumstick mobility, unlocking extreme knee long-axis rotation in theropods 🍗🦖🧵 www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08251-w

How to filter out AI Images in Google Image Search. Sharing this with my students so I figured I'd also share it with everyone here. Hopefully this image is still relevant given Google's changes. Save this on your computer or phone and refer to it as needed.

Thank you, bees! (And your friendly reminder that generative AI tools are so energy intensive that Meta and Google and other companies are looking to buy old nuclear reactors to power them.) arstechnica.com/ai/2024/11/e...

Love, love, love Dynamic Ecology's long search for patterns in the opaque faculty job market This time: Biden vote share is the dominant geo. pred. of # apps to EEB jobs How does this cycle (blue politics ->$ for schools ->educated workers) shape us? dynamicecology.wordpress.com/2024/11/18/t... #🧪

Breaking News: The Onion, the satirical publication, said it won a bankruptcy auction to buy Infowars, a website run by the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Reading Lord of the Rings again because it’s nice to hear about some fat little stoners who wreck an asshole’s shit

Publisher pals! Apparently @acmedarryl.bsky.social's graphic novel investigating how someone as mediocre as Elon Musk could amass so much money and power is only available in French because publishers everywhere else are afraid to make the loser mad. Someone pick this up, please. Make Elon mad.

Anyone teaching their students about BOO-lean searches today? Happy Halloween! 🦇 🎃 👻 🧪#academicsky

Discworld QOTD, from Reaper Man

this is really cool I obviously adore so many of the Discworld novels but to me Night Watch is Terry at the absolute peak of his powers and the best book in the entire series a fantastic choice

Disappoint a fascist. Vote.

"Mundane Halloween" returns! It's that time of year again, when Japanese website @dailyportalz holds its annual contest to dress up as something super ordinary. Here's a thread of some of my favorites from the 2024 contest!

“An endorsement of Harris had been drafted by Post editorial page staffers but had yet to be published … The decision not to publish was made by The Post’s owner — Amazon founder Jeff Bezos — according to the same sources." wapo.st/40isbQs

I told my students that they weren't allowed to use Generative "AI" this semester in sociolinguistics, not because of plagiarism, but because it's racist. And if they did, I would take it as a personal offense and assume that they were ok with racism. And now I just sent them this article.

if this election has proven anything at all it is the danger of allowing anyone to have a billion dollars

"The decision not to publish was made by The Post’s owner — Amazon founder Jeff Bezos." I worked at the paper for seven years and Bezos never interfered with a thing. This is five-alarm fire stuff. www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/...

Wow -- Biden to Native Americans for abuses in Indian Boarding schools: "The federal government has never apologized for what happened. Until today. I formally apologize as president of the United States of America! ... it's long overdue. Quite frankly there's no excuse."

“Washington Post endorsed Kamala Harris” is not a story “Washington Post and LA Times refuse to endorse out of fear of retribution from Donald Trump and signal their compliance in advance” is a fucking story whether anyone will heed the warning I don’t know but it is a loud one

Editor at Large at WaPo Robert Kagan has resigned in protest.

Timeline cleanse time

I love what #comics can do. Simply putting some boxes next to each other can achieve very different things depending on what's in them. Consider how your brain - without any instruction - infers (hopefully) what's going on in these 3 different sequences regarding continuity, space & time...

also frankly I am tired of coddling Trump voters and assuring them they are good people for voting for a fascist who wants to ethnically cleanse this country you want to be the bad guys? be the bad guys, own it, don’t expect to be thanked for the ruin you bring on us all

Look. Doing well in an exam.means that you are very good at taking exams - a very specific skill with about 0 applications in everyday work life. This article is nonsense and the ableist notions presented by the author shoud be hauled out with the trash and never thought of again.
