The older I get the more I appreciate and enjoy the Ferengi episodes of DS9. Of all the Trek races I actually think the Ferengi are some of the most complex and also evolve the most over the series. Quark is also very often an extremely astute outside observer of humanity.

NEBRASKA CROWD: “TAX THE RICH! TAX THE RICH!” @USRepMikeFlood: “So your proposal to solve (the debt) is tax the rich?” NEBRASKA CROWD: *CHEERS WILDLY* (not sure this went quite as he planned 😬)

yes. and while this state of affairs has many authors, i’d say that the problem became terminal thanks to mitch mcconnell’s efforts to try to torpedo the obama administration, making it his most ignominious legacy.

in retrospect it's kind of funny that sci fi was like "imagine a world where robots gain sentience, but humanity refuses to grant them personhood" but in reality every loser techbro loser thinks chatgpt deserves more rights than like, actual people

obsessed with utada hikaru coming out as non-binary with such anger and passion (intentional kh2 reference) they’re such an inspiration

The dying off of the people who fought Nazis and suffered at their hands is a big reason we are insufficiently afraid of autocrats and aspiring autocrats now. You can read this without a subscription. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/18/w...

Whoa there! We don't know all the facts yet. This could be insurance fraud. After all, the owner is "no angel."

NEW: Minnesota Republican state Senator Justin Eichorn, co-author of the "Trump Derangement Syndrome" bill that just made headlines, was arrested yesterday in Bloomington for allegedly soliciting sex with a 16-year-old girl. minnesotareformer.com/2025/03/18/g...

Did *Trump* convince voters of this? Or are there perhaps a series of institutions in between Trump & voters, mediating what they hear & how things are framed, that affected their views? You could call them ... mediators ... or maybe, for short ...

The thing he's doing here is showing up everywhere early, before the full voter file is even available and long before Pew comes out with a study, so he can set a narrative and get his company hired.

this is a good example of how this stuff is just the subjective and arbitrary decision making of a single individual laundered through a supposedly “objective” process

If you dipshits want to advocate for violence do it on your own page and not on mine, although my advice is you don’t do it at all. I know my own moral code and understand what political moment we’re in and how good people of conscience can still peacefully confront it.

Axios and WaPo reported yesterday that the military took down webpages celebrating Native American history. It looks like the purge was much more widespread, however — TPM found many pages describing the military's racial integration have also been removed. talkingpointsmemo.com/news/pentago...

One of the things that is totally lost on Carville is that conservatives will never believe that you aren’t secretly connected with <insert marginalized group>. It’s just that when you trash them, you send the message that you won’t fight for what you believe in and you’re a fake piece of shit.

“I’ll be back up to full speed any day now – just as soon as those autism researchers find a cure for burnout. Surely that’s what they’re working on, right??”

My brain literally cannot comprehend all of the bad stuff that just happened today so instead: scholastic book fair now has online wallets that you can use for your kiddos at the book fair- but also, you can donate to “share the fair” so others w/o can get books.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

There’s a great interview with Nick Park about Wallace And Gromit in last month’s Empire, and this bit in particular stood out. It sums up what artists have been trying to say about AI. The mistakes and the learning aren’t things to be bypassed, but a vital part of the process 🤟

The thing that gets me most about the passport stuff is that *it has no functional purpose* beyond harassment of an already marginalized population. It makes precisely no one safer. It *creates additional work* for bureaucrats and results in inaccurate gov't identity documents.

what the fuck is this (h/t @karavoght.bsky.social)

God I am going to miss this pharmacy, the lady who filled my anxiety prescription told me to salt my food extra for the next two weeks to counteract the low BP

Gym is not a personality. It’s barely a hobby. It’s got a lot of elements of eating disorder and body dysmorphic disorder. Cap at 4 hrs/week Job is not a personality. Most dude to dude advice is between homosocial and homoerotic. It’s what men want in other men, not what women want. Read Romances.

OH MY GOD

if by 10 tomorrow morning the democrats are not as one voice raising holy hell about this at every level of visibility — which as we all know they won’t be — then to understate the matter, that’s real bad

I am begging blue state governors to have lunch this week with your adjutant general of the National Guard. Cannot stress enough how important this relationship is going to be in the near future.

Yep: politicians need to represent their constituents and listen to their views, but politicians also need to have strong convictions and principles and should work on convincing the electorate of the correctness of those moral positions, too.

What’s happening at Plymouth State is terrible and has gotten very little media coverage www.nhpr.org/nh-news/2025...

I’d be in for this — I buy a lot of books, and yet am always thrilled to buy more!

When asked about the benefits to society of Universal Basic Income, David Graeber mentioned this.

I can see Schumer’s position that a shutdown would let Trump seize more power and that that’s not worth it (I disagree but I can see his point) but to not negotiate and force some concessions on immigration, speech, and other issues was a total abdication of responsibility.

it really pisses me off that the DOGE people don't appreciate that when you have a system that deals with 300,000,000 people, an error rate of 0.1% is 300,000 people, and if the system is a matter of life, death, and your entire financial existence, that's not a mistake you can make.

I think it has more to do with you might get locked up for absolutely no reason at all and then flown to El Salvador to die in prison even though a judge said you should be released

"they're harming the good government pupperinos" could activate like 50 million people if it gets into the wider media sphere

nearly every change made to american public schooling in decades has been to produce uneducated, fearful citizens without critical thinking skills or awareness of the world other than america. there's a reason the "my kid went to college and came back a LIBERAL" is such a stereotype

This is an incredibly thoughtful & illuminating thread📌

Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

The richest man in the world took over $5K out of this guy's bank account, claiming he was dead. The richest man in the world said he was saving money. He was not dead.

50% of the time, Tesla camera based autopilot will kill a child A lidar equipped car stops every time.

I can't stress this enough. The country and the world is not being shown just how much pushback is happening. You have to share it when you encounter it. They all think we're taking this lying down and we are not.
