Wondering what's the right balance of player-oriented posts vs fellow devs-oriented posts. πŸ€” Meanwhile, I switched to CHR-RAM instead of CHR-ROM. Diff maps will use diff combinations of metatiles and battles will combine diff monsters so CHR-RAM avoids duplicates and more control! #nesdev

Slowly plowing my way through attribute hell - we now have fully working horizontal scrolling. Next: vertical scrolling and more headaches, probably. #nesdev

Our little hero!

Still no attributes (they really are a pain!) but we've got both H and V scrolling working. H scrolling is a bit wonky because I fetch 15 rows over 8 frames, so the first half of the move is a bit slower. I'll revisit later but for now, I'm happy. Next: attributes😭 streamable.com/88jxxa

As expected, scrolling attributes on a large map is proving to be a bit of a headache so, stay tuned. The good news is code has been moved to MMC1! I can clearly see my level data being stored in bank 0 and my game code in the last bank. Fun times #nesdev

Doesn't look half bad

Took a break from scrolling to move the project to MMC1 before it gets too big. It's the mapper used by DW1-4 and it's got plenty of PRG and CHR space + WRAM for battery saves. Now I'm off to play DnD! πŸ§™β€β™‚οΈ

Still no attributes but I made a Python script to process a csv export from Tiled to RLE-encoded C arrays so now it looks more like an overworld! 3 years ago, I was scared of the NES learning curve and convinced I'd never be able to pull this off so I didn't even bother. Welp, here we are. #nesdev

V-scrolling nailed for tiles - time for attributes 😭

Still wrapping my head around coding the NES. I've been studying how Dragon Warrior 1-4 do map scrolling. I think I got it. Let's see if I can replicate it. I think once this and bank switching are behind, the rest, while tedious, will present much less of a challenge. Stay tuned...

I *am* considering moving the project to NES as I originally intended but ngl, this is cool.

#nesdev: here's an RLE-encoded array of metatile indexes, turn off the screen, extract from this array of metatiles that are also arrays of tiles and send those bytes to the nametable then assemble the attributes in a completely diff format so you get the right colors #gbstudio: so here's a png 😭

Decided to try llvm-mos for #nesdev in C πŸ€”

First time I ever played a Pokemon game 🀯

Needed a change of pace tonight. Cybernator / Assault Suit Valken was one of my fav games on SNES!

I was drawn to #gbstudio for its user-friendliness and high lvl of abstraction but the more I use it the more I gravitate towards doing gbdk occult C magicks rather than using GBS as intended. Am I weird?

Actual work has been crazy this past few weeks so progress has been slow / none-existent. I also started DQXI πŸ˜… Anyway, I got rid of the "dev" overworld and started the overworld for the first story. Here's a shored canoe.

I have the framework set for 4 short stories right now. Hard to tell how many I'll fit into the game. In the meantime, some inspirational reads!

As if I needed another project πŸ˜…

Good morning! Would you like some lore?

Modern RPGs have QOL features 8-bit RPGs did not. I'm thinking of togglable "classic" vs "modern" options. Ideas or suggestions?

The only super bowl I care about is that super bowl of ramen I'll be having in a few minutes 🍜

Happy Sunday! We now have blinky cursors for both menus and dialogues as well as scrolling text!

Here's something else that's not very impressive on the surface but I had to dive into engine code to make the little cursor blink and I'm pretty proud of it!

If you're in Canada you can save money on the LoFi cassette shipping by ordering it from Sad Songs Tapes. While we're on the subject, what is my tape even doing next to two absolute legends... www.sadsongstapes.com/tapes/p/lo-f... #tapes #cassette #lofigirl #lofichill #chillhop #gameboy #gbstudio
