The anti semitism at the end is making me laugh more than it should
Something about it reads like satire but I know it isn’t
Like does he hear himself? He sounds like this guy

I think the current discourse is discussing whether groceries have gotten to the point it’s cost effective as to eat out as to make food at home, and whether people understand per unit cost and all that

I think a lot of people, for whatever reason, primed themselves to hate whatever came next after the first season ended with the main character dying his hair

I have played so many indie games the last few years where the closest thing I had to a complaint was “I wish there was more of this”. And it’s not a bad thing to leave me hungry for more! I appreciate games with solid base mechanics and a reasonable scope that don’t overstay their welcome

That’s wild because I always compare it to a slot machine lmao all those lights and colors and sounds definitely scratch the same brain itch. And when it’s not actively pulling money out of me I actually kinda dig those same tricks being used for engagement

That’s valid about vampire survivors tho. I love that game but it’s like a slot machine that doesn’t take money

At least games like slay the spire don’t utilize fomo through limited time bullshit and battle passes
Like yes you can absolutely get sucked in and lose anywhere from a day to a week playing them but it is also way more possible to put them down and pick them back up at your own pace

Terry Pratchett was a good writer and a wise man but he wasn’t perfect. For example, in The Last Continent came out as a staunch opponent of pineapple on pizza. Now I can forgive a lot-

What rep?? I got to see Jessie go through an Old Western plot AND get closure/the most positive ending of anybody involved in breaking bad- El Camino rocked

I feel like Skyler is also going through an arc where she “breaks bad” for lack of a better term; cooking books, fucking her scuzzbag boss, laundering money- but at her worst moments she’s still handling things better than Walt
Skyler maybe could use a counselor. Walt should be sent to Arkham Asylum

And it’s still not worth invoking her work just to mention it. Whenever I do I inevitably spend the next few sentences complaining about her. Most of my friends don’t even realize how into Harry Potter I was because of how bad I harp on it- but that passionate hatred comes from a sense of betrayal

I used to be super into those books, but first I grew up and then JK started running her mouth and making it impossible to even be nostalgic for them- the only one I find works its way into my common usage is the reference to drinking unicorn blood to extend your life at a severe cost

Tech amplifies everything about humans, and unfortunately toxicity has its own modifier which stacks multiplicatively with technology

I think the voices are the same kind of shitty- they didn’t sprout in a vacuum and they exist in the context of CHUDS who came before them. I do however think their potential range and access to young, malleable minds is significantly amplified by technology

The main thing I enjoyed doing in that game is heading out into the wilderness, hunting and camping till a random event or quest came my way. It’s the only game I’ve ever enjoyed hunting animals in, probably because it feels like an option and not like I’m supposed to get a rush from killing deer

Yep. Better call Saul understands the central question of “what is a criminal? What is a bad person? Are they the same thing?” And explores it better in single episodes than breaking bad does in its entire runtime
I loved the guy who steals pills to sell to Nacho. Felt like a parody of breaking bad

The punisher is actually pretty rad when he’s a meditation on the cycle of violence, the futility of revenge, and the lack of closure it brings
It’s only when people think he’s just a badass who kills criminals the cops can’t because of red tape that he’s the shittiest character in marvel canon

Hah I was already typing out basically the same sentiment

When bad things happen to Walt it’s like hearing your shitty family member got their car impounded, again, because they keep parking it illegally
Whereas Saul is like a kid who’s trying his best to hang out with a better crowd but keeps slipping up and getting busted smoking weed or tagging
comment in response to

As much as I enjoyed breaking bad I have to agree
Jimmy/Saul is a better person and a more interesting character than Walter and so I feel like the end of his arc was just more interesting
They’re both flawed guys who keep digging their own graves but Saul is about 1000x more sympathetic

The message that people who do awful things and are part of awful systems are people first is an important one both for combating the impulse to dehumanize the other and for achieving a proper understanding of how things get to the point where people can do and accept these systemic crimes
comment in response to

In real life people like that can do real harm, and I think a valid criticism of the film would be that it pulls the punch on what that ignorance can really do in real life and focuses on the humanity of people who do and believe awful things
Not an awful theme, but borders uncomfortably on apologia

Like, we see that Forrest himself is not racist- he’s doesn’t have a personal reason to be and doesn’t have the facilities to be convinced
He did grow up in a place steeped in racism and did his best to be a good person with what he had in a complex society with a complex history he doesn’t grasp

What is being conveyed by that choice?
In the novel it might be as clear as you say, I have not read it but I think I provided a valid reading of the place his namesake takes up in the film narrator’s mind-he doesn’t understand the names relevance any more than the rest of the events he experienced

Didn’t Terry mean that he didn’t want his unfinished stuff published? Or is this new novel something unfinished that was finished and I’m just out of the loop

This thread is the first I’m hearing that, and Im not sure how that relates to the film
Like, one the author is dead and two its a different piece of media than the novel
It’s not quite the same thing but the starship troopers novel is also very deliberately designed and I also enjoy that movie

He mentions that he is named after a confederate general with the same lack of awareness of what that means as he does discussing his time in Vietnam, meeting the black panthers, Watergate, etc

I think perhaps part of it is that he is from the south and is as oblivious to the implications of his name or living as a white man in the south (admittedly one with a disability) in a way that a lot of people who grew up in a similar environment
“Forrest isn’t a bad guy just.. ignorant of context”
