I literally reported this Wednesday.

Trump pardoned the sentence of arguably the single biggest drug trafficker in American history on his second day in office!

The National Science Foundation fired all its experts. The National Science Foundation. Fired. All of its. Experts. And they weren't even told to! The leadership worked toward the Fuhrer and went beyond the cuts demanded of them in anticipation of many, many more firings—up to *half* its staff.

They could try "I don't have the authority to mass fire these workers without cause and neither do you"

No, the mail is not “the least of our worries.” It’s a fucking important worry. It is the only postal service that delivers to every address. They are only provider of complete mail services for overseas military bases and provide free overseas PO boxes. They help prepare passport apps. Ship meds…

Stagecoach Mary (Mary Fields) was the first Black woman employed as a mail carrier in the U. S. She was the second woman to work for U. S. Postal Service. She never missed a day of work.

I am very sad to say that I would have said this is a straight line from exactly what the signals were online, and nobody was listening to the whole cohort of folks shouting about this for about 10 years straight while having their lives ruined for mentioning it

A few years ago I did an occupational folklife project for the Library of Congress, interviewing 25 rural mail carriers in Appalachia. What I learned is that their work goes way beyond delivering mail—they are care workers for the communities they serve. This is going to hit rural places the hardest

Trump voters all love him until they realize they are affected by his decisions.

Three updates: 1. The Justice Department has deleted a database tracking federal police misconduct. The database was first proposed in 2020 following the police killing of George Floyd.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is booed by protesters as he announces Trump is cutting off funding for high-speed rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Instead of dealing with all the planes crashing everywhere, the former “Real World” star is abandoning investments in US infrastructure.

14. At first I wondered if this was written a while ago, because I've been reading a lot of Everett's books lately and they're usually more complex than this. Featuring a rural New Mexico deputy sheriff, it's pretty straight detective fiction...until it suddenly, jarringly isn't.

Most people probably aren’t tracking this but Senate Republicans just started an all-night voting marathon that will allow them to gut Medicaid and increase child hunger while giving handouts to billionaires like Elon Musk.

Again I am begging people in the media to note the legality of these actions in their headlines or blurbs. A post office is literally written into the constitution.

I’m not sure the world has seen a genuine supervillain until 2025. Of course there’ve been countless monsters: hitler, Stalin, pol pot. But a real life figure who fits the Gotham/Metropolis model. Plutocrat bigwig who is actually deeply evil & wants to run the world for cartoonishly stupid reasons.

13. Another book that's far too relevant right now. A book censor in an ultra-authoritarian regime starts sneak-reading banned literary classics and gets sucked into an underground resistance movement as the line between life and literature begins to blur. I wonder if this one's banned yet.

12. Not one of the better ones, in my opinion. It's all about a craze of "music with rocks in" sweeping Discworld, with even the wizards suddenly wearing leather jackets and spouting background-vocal babble, and of course it's full of rock 'n' roll puns. All pretty silly, as these things go.

I bet some people regret all those jokes about when is Infrastructure Week ever going to come.

Years ago, after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, I interviewed a former fb employee, and I remember her continually emphasizing that these tech bros weren't evil geniuses, but were, in fact, dangerous because they were utterly clueless, totally reckless, and had too much power.

Now that musk is saying he’s doing the DOGE stuff “because the globalists have plotted a Great Replacement in which they use government handouts to buy votes from illegal immigrants and urban blacks” maybe we don’t have to act like this is about deficits or cost cutting anymore

Time to take up knitting, I guess.

When Trump says Ukraine should have never let the war happen, never started it, etc he means the exact same thing the russians mean when they say they want peace: Ukraine should surrender to russia. Trump and Putin are aligned and working towards the same goal. They are not negotiating.

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

democrats won’t admit it, but my family’s economic outlook has gotten a LOT better since Trump took office. but what do i know? i don’t have a fancy economics degree, i’m just a regular guy who runs an airplane scrapyard

11. I read this a few weeks late for the holidays, but it’s a pretty fun collection of…well, pretty much what it says. Noir crime fiction set around Hanukkah in one way or another, usually involving a heaping helping of murder.

Big crowd at the SF Tesla dealership protesting our unelected overlord. A tiny sign hangs from an upstairs window

This commission statement refers to people with Autism, ADHD, asthma, auto-immune disease, and chronic illness as a “dire threat to the American people and our way of life”. This is a manifesto against disability. This is the language of eugenics.

Just to be clear, and because I think this is a question others might have...Niemoller did not set out to make people think he had never supported the Nazis. 1

I will keep saying, I have been breastfeeding for three years in some of the most lefty and queer childcare/lactation spaces imaginable and NEVER have I encountered so much as a whiff of quiet friction around the use of the term "breastfeeding"

Donald Trump’s administration has begun indiscriminately culling scores of people who keep air travel safe, despite four deadly plane crashes during his first two months as president.

And this question from @jamellebouie.net is not far fetched. The CDC used to collaborate closely with WHO to determine the composition of the next flu vaccine. A highly coordinated, data-driven process that involved global influenza surveillance, virological analysis, and vaccine strain selection.

As an American Jew, it is distinctly not great to see catastrophic moral collapse in both America and Israel at the same time

I met a brother who has photocopies of the first several months of the Conan the Barbarian newspaper strip. “Would you like some scans?” “Would I?!? 🤓” These are the first four strips in the initial post-origin arc. Latter part of September, 1978.

BREAKING WAPO: Elon Musk's DOGE is seeking access to a heavily-guarded IRS system that includes detailed financial information about every taxpayer, business, and nonprofit in the country — sparking alarm within the tax agency. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

They literally just did a search for key words and then fired everyone. This is the laziest fucking coup in history. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...

A new law signed by Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah prohibits unions from negotiating wages and other terms for teachers, firefighters, police officers and all other public employees, joining just two other states that have banned collective bargaining in the public sector.
