Guys, this looks important. The Honeybun needs a good home.

The Stolen Border/Uloupená hranice (Jiří Weiss, Czechoslovakia, 1947) Weiss started out as a documentary-maker in his native Czechoslovakia, continued in exile in Britain during WWII, and then returned home to make a fascinating feature debut set in 1938 but impossible to watch without hindsight.

Morning Bluesky. Last night was Russia’s biggest drone attack on Ukraine. Out of 267 drones launched only ten made it through.

But if that wasn’t enough, the administration is now encouraging financial executives to rat out any CFPB employees who have the gall to continue attempting to protect consumers. www.huffpost.com/entry/white-...

A reminder of one of the many times Farage has parroted Russian propaganda lies. Farage was pushed to public prominence by dozens of appearances on Russia TV, which would have had to have been authorised by the Kremlin. www.theguardian.com/politics/art...

“The postwar era is over. The global architecture built in 1945 is being burned to ground by Trump. Europeans need to plan for, & invest in, a future where they have to defend themselves without the US.That future does not loom in the distance. It is already here” www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Starlink should be banned from European markets on national security grounds. Anything requiring Starlink should be shut out of the European market, and sanctions should be considered against all relevant actors. kyivindependent.com/us-threatens...

Any countries building Starlink into their telecom systems should be thinking twice right now.

So. Those mad fish at @waterstones.bsky.social have only launched some crazy deal on pre-orders. Which means that if you enjoy (i) gritty crime fiction (ii) authors with two pseudonyms and (iii) ridonculous bargains it’s now 25% cheaper to satisfy your urges. www.waterstones.com/book/the-cut...

The Express has rediscovered another benefit of Brexit: the need to queue up and surrender biometric data at EU borders. That particular pleasure may be back on the agenda later this year, after being delayed a number of times. www.express.co.uk/travel/europ...

And we got finger-wagged by a New England journo "expert" for not staying in our lane and sticking to our knitting (his words) and leaving hard stuff to (paywalled) NYT and Wapo. So we were right, and we did the right thing, and we didn't need anyone's permission to make our own news decisions.

A year ago this month, Trump said he would encourage Russia to attack NATO allies and "do whatever the hell they want" unless allies paid up. We thought it was so important, we ran it on the front page of the @mississippifreepress.org at a time when the New York Times and others didn't.

When even the New York Post has to publish this, you know you fucked up.

Brandy For The Parson. 1952 film about jolly alcohol smugglers, filmed partly in Devon. Like Whisky Galore the #HMCustomsandExcise presence is peripheral (mainly Investigator Frederick Piper) but owners of the Ladybird book will probably enjoy uniforms and beards.

Brexit: “that great victory for the sovereign right to cock things up”… give ourselves food poisoning, lose control, swamp ourselves in red tape, pay more for stuff and stubbornly isolate ourselves from our own continent… A relentless, ruinous stupidity. (Private Eye)

Spot on

Don’t rely on Politico. Mathias Döpfner, its owner, self described contrarian & CEO of Axel Springer, praised the “inspiring message” of JD Vance’s speech that was met with horror in Europe, as he berated the continent’s politicians for their “whiny” response to the US vice-president.

President Zelenskyy has been one of the greatest leaders of our time, guiding Ukraine through the darkest period of its recent history, rising up to Russia’s unwarranted aggression, being an inspiration to the Ukrainian people and ensuring that Ukraine’s voice is heard on the world stage.

HMRC ditches crackdown on private equity tax. Who will bear the cost of appeasing private equity? Govts listen to donors, finance industry, developers and the rich. The rest get two child benefit cap, winter fuel payment, frozen personal allowance, cuts in public services. archive.ph/BjU9b

THE CASE FOR REJOINING THE EU HAS NEVER BEEN STRONGER! UNITY IS STRENGTH!

This 'Plan of the City and Suburbs of Exeter' dates back to 1765 and is from Benjamin Donn's 'Map of the County of Devon'. It was the first entirely new survey of Devon since the one undertaken by Christopher Saxton in the 16th century. 📷 Townsend Maps T15 #MapMonday #MondayMaps #MappingOurExeter

Starmer confirming the UK is willing to put boots on the ground in Ukraine. An immense moment. Hard to overstate how important this is or how impressive it is that he's done it.

An Exeter city centre sunset.

Winter sun setting over Exeter. 🙌🏼

We went to Exeter today, experienced the fourth narrowest street in the world and had delicious waffles from Kaspas!

Another example of appalling media bias. This German story makes a big play that an attacker was a Syrian immigrant and totally buries the fact that the big hero of the day was another Syrian immigrant who rammed the attacker with his food delivery truck to save lives. A far better story.

Federal employees: this is why you need to download and take home all your performance reviews and HR documents (eOPF). Documentation of good performance may not get you your old job back but you want to be able to show future employers the true story
