LET’S DO THIS UCSD #standupforscienceUCSD

Our special feature/passion project at AmNat, "Demystifying fundamental theories in ecology", co-organized with @sebastianschreiber.bsky.social is out now 🤩 www.journals.uchicago.edu/toc/an/2025/...

Feb 28 deadline for junior folk to apply for travel to the annual @smtpb.bsky.social meeting on Mathematical & Theoretical Population Biology in Chicago. For those paying their own travel & accommodation (no registration!) it is March 14. Apply here: www.nitmb.org/modeling-and... @nitmb.bsky.social

This thread is a tragedy of epic proportions.

Oops.

How humanity’s eternal testament will be plastic bags, cheap clothes and chicken bones - Geologists think our indelible mark on the planet - 'technofossils' - will be fast food, fast fashion, and concrete #anthropocene Story by me www.theguardian.com/science/2025...

Three years since our old world was brutally destroyed overnight.

Hey #Chicago! It's time to take a stand for #science. We are rallying on March 7 at noon at the Federal Plaza. Start making your signs! Info standupforscience2025.org/chicago-il/ RSVP (optional) www.eventbrite.com/e/stand-up-f... #standupforscience #scienceforall @standupforscience.bsky.social

A letter of support for the NIH funding of biomedical research, and the damage wrought by imposing severe caps on indirect costs: docs.google.com/forms/d/1Agz...

🚨 WANT TO HELP US STAND UP FOR SCIENCE? 🚨 Here's a little update on where we're currently at with the planning process! Is your state red or grey & you want to see an event happen? Fill out our volunteer form or share with a friend! airtable.com/app4h5wUssMG... #standupforscience2025

Help our Science friends out if you are in these cities please!

➡️ NIH grants in '23 included $26B of direct costs and $9B of F&A = 26% of total costs or 35% of total direct costs. These are LOW overhead rates for any R&D-intensive industry. Academic biomedical research is an efficient bargain. ➡️ Every $1 of NIH support generates ~$2.50 of economic activity.

Here are some data documenting the funding "pause" pulled from NIH Reporter. Current results (FY25) (Red) are compared with results from FY21 (first year of Biden Administration) and FY24. Note that data from Reporter lag behind release of NoAs by ~1 week. I will be tracking this going forward.

POSTDOC OPPORTUNITY IN LA JOLLA 🏝️ My colleague Marygorret Obonyo here at UC San Diego is hiring for a new postdoc position to study the link between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer — including a novel mouse model and links to interferon pathways (contact below) PLEASE SHARE

This funding freeze is already having an immediate impact. It is hard to plan for salaries around grants that you have no definite timeline of hearing about. Its grad student recruitment, and uncertainty over grants means that many fewer solid offers are being made bsky.app/profile/eliz...

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

this website from the House Democrats on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee is surveying the impact of the Administration’s mass firings of federal employees from science agencies—share with friends you know have been affected

No reason this can't happen everywhere

Thanks for the info from reviewers... All 8 CSR study section meeting scheduled today have been cancelled (due to the Federal Register announcement issue). Some reviewers are finding out that their meetings are cancelled when they are notified by the travel agency that their tickets are cancelled.

"I don't know what NSF is going to be now, but it's not more efficient. It's just a mess." My story on today's firings and their impact. www.npr.org/2025/02/18/n...

Searing letter. "At the top of NSF we need people who radiate epistemic authority; beacons of faith in the power of research and education to benefit the Nation ... What we have instead is blades of grass, bending in the wind, however it blows. People without a shred of empathy." Alt text added.

Attention scientists! Wondering what else can you can do to advocate for research funding? Let's all submit Programmatic Requests to Members of Congress next month, and flood the zone in a show of public support for #NIH and #NSF! ! #SciComm #Science #Medicine #MedSky 🧬🔬🧪 Details below⤵️ 🧵 1/n

This is basically right in my view. A 6% annual growth rate in published articles has been slow-brewing crisis in science. It's created an ocean of publications where too many dubious claims can find support in peer-reviewed research. This is unsustainable. www.theatlantic.com/science/arch...

While we are all dealing with the Great Destruction — of NIH and US science and the US economy — we have been hearing from NIH people who want to write things for the outside world. If you are an NIH person that wants to share a blog post with the world anonymously, please let us know.

Awful and they won't be satisfied with even this. If not stopped, DOGE will dismantle American leadership in science & damage communities and economies throughout the US. joshuasweitz.substack.com/p/cutting-th...

Trying to keep emotions out of it, I wrote down my thoughts on the current situation. Unlikely this will be helpful to anyone, but had to get it off of my chest. thoughtsforbreakfast.wordpress.com/2025/02/18/a...

NIH study sections appear to be grinding to a halt. Would be useful for scientists to share information here. 👇 This is important.

I am reeling from the cuts at NSF- a close friend and colleague, who was an outstanding PO and absolute asset to the evolutionary biology community, was just fired. This is simply because he COULD be- he was still in the 2 year probationary period after changing jobs at NSF. Goddamn it.

Informative thread about university endowments in the US

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

Please don’t stop sharing and posting your science because of the current attack on it, it is still valuable and reminds us what the fight is for

I love the spirit of this! To be a scientist is to spend your time thinking about discovery, possibility, potential. It’s a lot easier to tear down than to create. Take @vram142.bsky.social up on it - I can confirm, discussions with him are always a fun ride.

Devastating if true. Far worse than not getting tenure. It will be very difficult to recruit people into these positions, given that the trust in the government has been undermined. Regaining it will take years if not decades.

Never forget what russia has done to Mariupol. There can be no lasting peace in Europe without justice for this. It's either peace through strength and accountability, or more wars through appeasement and concessions. No third way.

I agree. The reaction is way too muted. I think it is actually time for people to go to the streets and protest against the destruction of public-serving institutions by DOGE, which is nothing but a gang led by a random unelected person. This is f*cked up and it has to stop!

We have to stand up for science! Anyone who can join these rallies and believes that US science must be protected should come! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Nice article in the @nytimes.com on the consequences of the 15% NIH overhead cap. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
