An older Canadian TV series loosely based on the Shakespearean festival in Stratford Ontario. Brilliant.

Pulitzer Prize winning writer argues that we must also consider the duplicity of Fitzgerald himself. Fascinating thesis. www.contrabandcamp.com/p/gatsbys-se...

Carney and Poilievre with their out-of-the-gate promises of tax cuts assume the electorate is myopic, unserious and craven. Have they not witnessed the aspirational response of Canadians to Trump's threats over the past weeks? We want the same aspiration from our leaders, not baubles and trinkets.

Clicked on the link to donate. Very top of the page is a quote from "Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party." Please change that pronto if you don't want to squander the momentum the party is building.

Honest question. Who specifically on the left has been making these kinds of statements since the threats from Trump emerged?

After 50 years of listening to CBC I have lost my trust. On Sunday #crosscountryfuckup, at a moment when CBC should have been channeling the clear, unequivocal voice of anxious/fearful Canadians facing an existential threat, we were given a clown show. Disillusioned beyond words.

Couldn't believe my ears when he said this. After ianhanomansing.bdky.social assuring listeners that the show was not about "both-sidesing" the question. Sheesh.

I was upset before the show but more upset after. Please read timfordwrites.bsky.social 's thread on this matter if you really want to understand why so many of us objected to the framing of the question and the format of the show.

Arrogant and incapable of conceding they might have made a mistake in normalizing and amplifying Trump's threat to Canada. They don't understand the danger of treating the loss of our sovereignty as an open-ended question and inviting people to discuss the pros and cons.

Just wrote a complaint to the ombudsman. Hope others will too.

I heard that. Couldn't believe my ears. So much for Ian Hanomansing's insistence that the show wasn't both-sidesing the issue.

The entire premise of the show was wrong -- treating the idea of annexing Canada as an open-ended question and inviting people to share their ideas and feelings. For goodness sake. Could the producers of the show have come up with anything more offensive and stupid?
comment in response to

Also, and I can’t believe I have to say this, NPR and CBC, but annexing sovereign countries isn’t a “proposal.” Not Poland, not Iraq, not Canada - no “proposals” in any of these cases. It’s not a grant application, it’s a violation of international law and an abomination.

I also submitted a complaint form.

The first email you read is someone who naively speculates that we could become a powerful state influencing the direction of the US govt. For goodness sake, this is so ludicrous it's beyond laughable and it's disgraceful this idiocy was given air and used to launch the discussion. Sane washing.

Just write a complaint and submitted to the CBC on their webpage. Encourage others to do the same.

It's not that we don't understand what is planned. The premise is just plain wrong. Don't treat Trump's idiocy as something that deserves discussion and his proposal as something to be looked at. Recast the question. Ask about the ways we will resist? Get angry like the rest of us. No milquetoast.

Stop equating left and right wokeism". Stop blaming the left for the abuses of the right. When a student asked me, in a challenging manner, to respect their pronouns, I bristled but knew I was only being asked to let go of an outdated gender paradigm. I didn't feel oppressed for god's sake.

Why do you consider efforts by gov't and institutions to protect the rights/dignity of vulnerable groups "arbitrary linguistic fealty displays"? Reducing such efforts to "pronoun affirmation" is a cheap trick. Stop equating the legitimate asks of the marginalized with the gross abuses of the right.

If only the black family hadn't moved in next door he wouldn't have had to support white supremacists. If only she hadn't nagged him so much, he wouldn't have had to punch her in the face. If only the section on gender in his library wasn't so noticeable, he wouldn't have had to vote for a facist.

My elderly neighbours were incensed by the Ottawa convoy. Yesterday the husband was perched on a ladder putting up a Canadian flag over their garage. It was very cold. They are almost 80 years old. The flag was right side up. ❤️

An elderly lady in my neighbourhood was incensed by the Ottawa convoy. When supporters staged a parade in support in our downtown she drove by and shouted at them. Today her husband was up a ladder hanging the Canadian flag above their garage. They're 78. It was cold. The flag was the right way up.

We love our extraordinary and beautiful country. This ridiculous and insulting rhetoric over the past weeks has stirred a deep vein of patriotism and mood of resistance in Canadians. I'm heading to the grocery store now to buy goods marked by the retailer a few days ago with Canadian flags.

It's happening already. On Friday Trudeau will meet with Canadian premiers to explore improving trade between provinces and expanding export markets. BC premier is fast-tracking 18 resource projects to reduce our reliance on the US. "Product of Canada" food is flying out of the Costco freezers.

We may be chuckling but damage done. We Canadians are sharing lists of Cdn-made goods to replace US imports. We're cancelling travel to the US and changing our kids' grad school plans. We're looking at new trade alliances. We're remembering how much we love our beautiful and extraordinary country.

US relations with Canada are now damaged and citizens are deeply suspicious. BC and Ont have already removed US liquor from store shelves. Canadians are sharing lists of Canadian-made goods to replace products from the US. The on-again off-again game Trump is playing will only exacerbate this mood.

Canadians are baffled. As our prime minister said this evening, we have fought with you and died with you. In spite of differences our friendship has persisted for decades. We love our extraordinary and beautiful country and this attack has stirred our patriotism.... and our indignation.

Agree. I didn't vote for Trudeau in the last election but I stand with him this evening. It was a speech for the ages.

Trudeau's speech was that of a true leader, delivered with grace, eloquence, and sense of our shared history. As a Canadian I was reminded of my love for our "extraordinary and beautiful" country.

The effect of today's events on Canadians has been profound. We are not overly given to nationalistic sentiment but Trump's attack on our economy has stirred a deep vein of patriotism. Trudeau gave a speech for the ages and reminded us of our love for this extraordinary and beautiful country.

Trudeau gave a speech for the ages. We Canadians are not especially good at expressing nationalistic sentiment, but Trudeau reminded us of how much we love this "extraordinary and beautiful" country. I joined Dominic LeBlanc (his finance minister) in wiping away tears at the end of that speech.
