Several good things are happening according r/fednews so I am going to drop them here. If federal workers are fighting back, how much more us? A thread/

There is so much Resistance taking place that it's hard to keep track. This weekend, we will see protests at Tesla dealerships across the US (I know 3 are planned for around the DMV with @thirdactmd.bsky.social involved).

NEWS: Federal judge blocks parts of two of Trump’s anti-diversity executive orders, finding that some provisions violate the First Amendment and are unconstitutionally vague. * preliminary injunction: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... * opinion: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

How it started. How it’s going

Yep! Because they now want to be exclusively a "science philanthropy". It's a... time to be researching and arguing* about racial philanthropy. * - with myself primarily.

So incredibly heartened by my colleagues who are fighting like hell for a world where people have access to the arts and humanities, not because it serves STEM, but because this is about nourishing our humanity

On the Left(s), we constantly have to beg and borrow. You spend countless hours to raise a fraction of what rightwing organizers raise in a quarter of the time. It really hinders what can be done. Hardly anyone wants to have honest conversations about money and organizing.

excited to see this special issue #SocialProblems intro on the Racism of Omission is out! by @victorerikray.bsky.social, @rorykramer.bsky.social and Eduardo Bonilla-Silva. I've been telling people about this long before it was published academic.oup.com/socpro/advan...

I should revise this to say: the goal of the men and monied interests behind the coup is not just to loot and monetize the collapse of the United States. It’s to loot, collapse and capture the whole world. They are coming for the whole world. That’s what the sitch with Russia/Ukraine is teaching us.

Not true. Elon's speaking in the weird, stochastic way he always does and however full of shit he is (very), it's definitely not incoherent to his audience. It doesn't do our side any favors to pretend these guys are suddenly blundering or have lost the plot when they are clearly winning.

Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes. You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment. My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc. www.reddit.com/r/Passports/...

Important 🧵: Stanford political scientist uses data to show DOGE is attacking “liberal” agencies, not focusing on waste & inefficiency: “The hardest hit agencies are those that regulate industry, protect public health, and expand access to education.”

I don't think people really get how these employee purges are just going to break the culture of public organizations for a very long time.

And this is magnified and given political credibility by conservative ideals that want to see the government run like a business and/or by business people.

listen to @hebagowayed.bsky.social 🧵

My takeaway from this is that people's politics are often incoherent and contradictory. It's why I find polling people about politics is generally not useful. This person is upset at Tr*ump but sees RFK as a "bright spot" and considered herself a Democrat. There are millions of ppl like this.

"It should be plain by now that the Indian immigrants (pro-Trump or otherwise) who provide the thin bulwark between Trumpism’s tech-bro wing and its blatantly ethnonationalist wing will be easy sacrifices down the line." slate.com/technology/2...

When the fascists are fighting, you don’t pick a side. You get out of the way, and then point and laugh.

We are going to see increasing calls for kindness, civility & love in the coming days. From superbowl ads to the "kindness forever" signs that seem to have taken place of the pride displays at Target. 1/n

Last year I was frustrated with the frame that if you "don't like" AI in higher ed you must just "not understand it" this frame very conveniently drew attention away from how many of its proponents do not understand how it works.

Next up, they will attempt to destroy the Bureau of Labor Statistics to make accurate reporting of employment numbers impossible. They will re-mix the covid-era "if we stop testing for covid, we'ed have very few cases" but for the economy.

If you missed tonight’s town hall with @naomiaklein.bsky.social, @chenjerai.bsky.social, @astra.bsky.social, and @keeanga.bsky.social on resisting the shock and awe politics of the far right and their billionaire enthusiasts, you can watch the video here:

Anna Julia Cooper was an author, educator, sociologist, speaker, Black liberation activist, Black feminist leader, and one of the most prominent scholars in United States history. She was born enslaved, and yet became the fourth Black woman to ever earn a PhD. #BlackHistoryMonth

On Audre Lorde’s birthday, I’m thinking about her Kitchen Table Press. She (second from left), Barbara Smith, Cherrie Moraga and Hattie Gossett came together to establish a press centering feminist and lesbians of color — and it shook the publishing industry. #bhm

CW: "At the hotel, at least one person tried to commit suicide, according to several migrants. Another broke his leg trying to escape. A third sent a plaintive missive from a hidden cellphone: “Only a miracle can save us.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

feeling disempowered by your political system? has a solution for that...🥲

The NAACP is re-mixing 1930s-era "don't buy where you can't work" campaigns to confront the neo-segregationists targeting DEI. apnews.com/article/blac...

"the Hindutva movement is now fundamentally tied to MAGA, hitched to being an obsequious satellite... it has figures who might take Hindutva catchphrases into spaces of unprecedented power, but the extent—and price—of this influence now seems to hinge upon total surrender to MAGA priorities"

One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs. I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.

Portuguese editorial cartoonist Zez Vaz reaches back to Tiananmen Square to call on American defiance.

but we are not surprised, are we? there's long been a weird divide between disciplines, often following the "hard" and "soft" empirical sciences. i'd bet that more scientists are of the "but not OUR field..." mind than we want to admit :/

what happens to pro-palestine activists is, imo, a great predictor of what's to come for many others. and it will happen with the help of more people, within and outside of institutions, than one may think.

Need a white guy to walk confidently into a federal building and delete all the student loans files

There’s a workshop today at Cornell about getting grants from the NIH and I’m wondering if they’re unveiling some kind of Time Machine or stasis device to help shift our applications one year back or four years forward because otherwise…

Higher education Institutions: “We are committed to DEI.” Faculty/Staff: “Will you publicly state that?” HEI: “No.” F/S: “Will you support us when backlash comes?” HEI: “No.” F/S: “Will you commit to resources?” HEI: “Best we can do is rename your jobs/offices to something slightly more generic.”

Critical Sociology compiled Michael Burawoy's articles and allowed free access. I hope other journals will do the same. journals.sagepub.com/page/crs/vir...

On thi 15th day of #BlackHistoryMonth, I want to re-introduce you to one of my favorite organizers of the 20th century, Louise Thompson Patterson: prisonculture.substack.com/p/louise-tho...

People think staying silent means they will ignore you. But the fascists interpret silence as a weakness and take it as an invitation to go further. If you fight back, at least you keep your dignity, and you might win.

Basically we are looking at a pandemic/Great Recession sized disaster heading toward higher ed in the US, for no other reason than the fact that the Republican Party is in a culture war with academics.

On Feb. 14th I try always to give honor to one of the greatest contributors to American democracy in our nation’s history, Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery, Douglass never knew his actual birthdate, and adopted Feb. 14th as the day. His penetrating insights about our country inspire me daily.

80+% of the summary "services" provided by AI could just be done better by teaching people they can use find commands in readable text I KNOW that this sounds obvious but if you're an instructor, poll your students! They don't know this!
