genuinely feel insane

What did 14 years of autocratic populism produce in Hungary? Poverty and corruption www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

Trump and Elon are killing off Meals on Wheels. No, really. 👇 Agency for older adults and people with disabilities to be shuttered under HHS cuts. www.marketwatch.com/story/agency...

So much for tohar haneshek or “purity of arms.”

GOLDMAN hikes its odds of US recession to 35% — from a prior 20%. The move reflects “the sharp recent deterioration in household and business confidence, and statements from White House officials indicating greater willingness to tolerate near-term economic weakness in pursuit of their policies.”

States would have to enact 50% income taxes to even come close to replacing federal programs. And there is no state level replacement for FEMA. That’s a profoundly stupid idea.

Businesses famously do well with uncertainty

Further showing how sloppy and rushed all of this is, @josepagliery.bsky.social appears to have caught a major error in the government's notice that it claims it will provide people who are to be deported under the Alien Enemies Act; it cites a totally irrelevant law (and has typos in it).

basically every problem we face is because Congress is totally clocked out—both unwilling and incapable of acting like a governing institution

The CDC was instructed by The Regime to suppress a risk assessment about the current U.S. measles outbreak, so it’s fortunate that the WHO provided one. “The public health risk in the Region of the Americas for measles is considered high due to the persistence of the circulation of the virus…”

Abject cowardice from some of the most powerful people in the country.

So, the DOGE kids intend to rewrite the social-security administration's COBOL code-base! and they want to do it ... ... in *a few months* I did a huge dive into COBOL a few years ago (www.wealthsimple.com/en-ca/magazi...) ... ... so let me explain why DOGE is *way* over its skis here 1/9

@nbcnews.com what in the name if all that is holy are you doing with this headline. Disgraceful www.nbcnews.com/politics/don...

Love how Wurman keeps pretending it's a fascinating, unanswered question whether you can defy a court order because you believe the court lacks jurisdiction. That is quite literally what "sovereign citizens" base their arguments on. It does not work. Not ever.

So we could lose $200B in tourism, $100B in immigrants paying taxes, $100B in weapons manufacturing, $500B in lost tax revenue from firing IRS employees… is it sinking in yet?

“A.I.’s most revolutionary potential is helping experts apply their expertise better and faster. But for that to work, there has to be experts…[but] learning is a messy, nonlinear human development process that resists efficiency. A.I. cannot replace it.” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/29/o...

But Chuck Schumer assured me keeping the government open would absolutely positively stop this from happening

For a former Army Special Forces colonel he sure is a dumbass. And usually National Guard/Reserve SF has more experience, thus more mature, but…not in this case.

Diversity initiatives were meant to overcome the old patterns of nepotism, so I guess it makes sense that the enemies of diversity are big fans of nepotism.

Ohhhh…damn. I should start taking night classes again.

This is definitely a “both and” situation. Not only did the administration set up a clear dragnet, but the line officers clearly got the message not to look particularly closely, and many of them genuinely are bad at the job of identifying gang members.

NASA Friday expands gov contract for Elon Musk SpaceX adding it's Starship rocket (which still has not successfully carried cargo to orbit and twice recently blew up)

*Really* hope Crawford wins An oligarch proving he can buy any election he wants would be very bad news 🫤

Oh my God. The email contains an implied threat that any student who doesn’t immediately leave might be sent to El Salvador. /technically it says “countries other than their countries of origin,” but the context right now, given everything going on, makes the threat clear.

The origin story of Bari Weiss and The Free Press is that they were fighting for free speech, but the real origin story is that as a student she tried to get Middle Eastern professors fired. They are a snitch organization for the Trump regime.

Is that bad

It's so cool we can watch the reincarnation of George Washington call into the SSA

US stocks plunged on Friday, with the Dow tumbling 716 points and the S&P 500 on track for its worst quarter since 2022. Investors were digesting slightly stubborn inflation data and weakening consumer sentiment while wrestling with continued tariff anxiety. cnn.it/42ddcH2

RFK Jr. should be impeached. Public health belongs to everyone, but most don’t notice us when everything is clicking along nicely. Most are about to notice us.

What happened to their claim that Elon was only working one day a week, to stretch his 130 days out? They forgot that lie already? www.yahoo.com/news/elon-mu...

You see they're bringing MERIT back to government. www.defensenews.com/pentagon/202...

Of course paying people to vote or register to vote—via direct cash payments, entrance to a sweepstakes or lottery, or any other material benefit—is criminal, undemocratic, and wrong. Of course it is. Everyone knows that, including the people pretending not to because they want these bribers to win.

Lol

This latest vote-buying scheme by Musk incredibly corrupt, at same time Tesla suing Wisconsin, and likely illegal It is a felony in Wisconsin to offer, give, lend or promise to lend or give anything of value to induce a voter to cast a ballot or not vote.

SCOOP: DOGE wants to rebuild SSA's codebase in months, risking benefits and system collapse, sources tell me. The plan is to migrate all systems off COBOL quickly which would likely require the use of generative AI. www.wired.com/story/doge-r...

Hegs is one of these dudes who was on the FOB back in the mid-2000s and never really came home. If you can't let it go, you end up becoming a parody of yourself.

I never want to hear about smart Wall Street or people in finance.

I’ve been sort of idly keeping track of all the points in the Declaration of Independence’s bill of particulars that arguably apply to the Trump Admin. This is the first four-in-a-row I’ve hit. www.archives.gov/founding-doc...

JFC, quit saying RFK Jr. is not wrong. This isn’t debate team. He is WRONG.

I think this is partly right: a lot of people prefer an authoritarianism that has the aesthetics of getting shit done over boring liberalism

RFK is a eugenics freak first and foremost and everything falls downstream from that. he *wants* excess deaths. he thinks that only the "fit" should survive.

Someone asked me what to do if you see someone being snatched off the street like those students detained by ICE, and whether you should ask them to tell you their family members’ numbers or their lawyer to notify them, to try to help. It’s a noble sentiment. But… /1

NEW: Money is pouring into Wisconsin’s Supreme Court election so fast that political observers now believe it is likely to reach $100 million by Tuesday, election day. Already, it has become the costliest judicial race in U.S. history. By @megomatz.bsky.social

POLITICO: ".. Bank of America economists now believe that 'modest stagflation' is the most likely outcome for the U.S. this year .. “.. 'The reason that we’re a little bit prone to stagflation right now — especially the inflation part — is that our starting point is not very favorable,' .."

The situation at the NIH and for all biomedical and cancer cure research in the United States is MUCH MUCH WORSE than you realize.

Well, the bad news is Trump is using the threat of lost federal funding to force all institutions to bend the knee to fascism I suppose the good news is he's also gutting all the funding anyway so once people realize it's gone hopefully they'll get their courage back

If a 78-year-old George W. Bush appointee can school DOJ and DOD on anti-trans discrimination, maybe we should expand our definition of what’s possible — and then act on it.
