I promised a bonus #CrabsAZ. There were no fossils before, so how about 7 true (above) and 7 false crabs (below) illustrated by @franzanth.bsky.social, helped by me and @javiluque.bsky.social? 🦀🧪🦑 Buy it here (from Franz): www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/1292...

Hey! I’m Meghan, a lifelong artist; painter and drawer. The deep ocean has my heart and I adore painting unusual critters you don’t usually hear about ❤️ I’m contracted for writing and illustrating a deep ocean children’s book releasing in 2026. I also use deep ocean images in my personal work.

"The land requirements of renewable energy projects are often criticized in public debates.. the study shows that in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, far more land is allocated to golf courses than to renewable energy facilities." well well well 🙃 phys.org/news/2025-02...

"Is your name "[my full legal name]" <- very normal and not unsettling texts to get from your sister at 8.30am

This this this!!! THIS!!!

It's been about a year since I last got a tattoo and so obvs I'm thinking wistfully again about the octopus collarbone/neckpiece that's lived in my head rent-free since I started getting ink

Additionally don't give me a lecture about being kind and accommodating when I email you to clarify what's going on. I spent my Sunday on the unsolicited proposal ok that's pretty accommodating

Happy #MolluscMonday Check out this beautiful venerid, #Globivenus toreuma from Sri Lanka #veneridae #molluscsofsrilanka

#MolluscMonday Limpets on the shoreline near the Espegrend Marine Station in Bergen where the weather looks set to be fine for this week’s workshop on bryozoans.

If you're going to get your student to cold-email someone and ask for feedback on a proposal with a short turnaround, the least you could do is copy edit the thing for them first?

Deep sea mystery: does anyone know what this weblike structure is that we say on the deep sea corals today during the ROV dive? What forms it? 🌊🪸🐟🦀🦑

Hardly new info, but BSky should know: Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply. Thank you, little guardian molluscs. 🧪🌏🚰

Speaking as an agender: So weird for cis people to be like “I don’t get it” when you guys are like also very attached to your internal sense of sex and gender Like what’s not to get? Not being an asshole, is what it looks like

Yes! Most larval bivalves have byssus, and adults often do in the Pteriomorphia which is one of the oldest groups of molluscs. You can find direct evidence of byssus in some groups because they literally have a byssal notch or a byssal gape - a gap in the shell where byssus can come out!

Got a bunch of viviparid snail fossils in chunky rocks that were donated to us inside an enamel saucepan? That's my vote for weirdest! I'll see if I can pull a photo out of my phone of it, i'm sure I've got one!

One small good thing: I was at a day of talks fostering collabs between NHM and UoR (whose TVSP site were moving collections to in a few yrs) and the session chair introduced me with my correct pronouns without me even needing to say anything. Also the day was v useful and productive!
