Any federal employees who lost their jobs need a short temp position? We have funding for ~March-May for a genomics technician in my lab in Lafayette, Louisiana -- starting as soon as possible. DM or email me for more details!

In comparison, NSF’s budget is $9 billion. The amount of fed money gone to Musk’s companies could fund the *entire next 4 years* of NSF. But sure, let’s talk about “government efficiency”…

Please call and write to your congresspeople to emphasize the importance of NSF to basic science, education, and businesses. Here's a link to a handy document you can use to look up NSF dollars and impact in your state!

Thank you, @kimlanelaw.bsky.social www.propublica.org/article/ted-... Everyone literally runs around acting like EOs are enforceable edicts

Steve Leibman, career USDS employee, now DOGE employee, wrote an epic reply to the 5 bullet point email that you should read: “Because of the indiscriminate firings and newly introduced culture of fear, I'm the only one left to work on my current project.” www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-d...

“This is truly a national tragedy and one that is being executed by people who do not understand the value of scientific research.” 🧪 from @science.org

Creativity is the antithesis of destruction. Took an hour this week to paint something new at our local arts center with other amateur painters and felt a little better about my corner of the world. I recently visited a warmer state and met this roadrunner that lives on my friend's windowsill.

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

Do you know any students that might be interested in ecological forecasting? The @ecoforecast.bsky.social student/early career association is hosting two workshops on how to get involved. Both are targeted to early career (e.g., undergraduate) audiences, but open to all!

NOAA is in the Trump administration's crosshairs. You know the important work they do, but may now know that It's the descendant of the Coast Survey, the nation's first scientific agency, founded in 1807 under Jefferson. I spoke with maritime historians to put NOAA's legacy in context. 🧪🦑🌎🐟

I didn't grow up with a lot of money. I didn't know anyone who was a scientist. I relied on federal pell grants, federal loans, and my own jobs to pay my way through college. Some scholarships supported me as a low-income student, some as a woman in science, and others for good grades.

I owe so much of my career and scientific journey to the National Science Foundation. It's really hard to watch the dismantling of our government structure and support for cutting edge science, and for training and supporting the folks that will become the scientists of the future.

I'm frustrated and sad to learn that the NSF Program Officers that I work most closely with were fired yesterday. These people are passionate about ensuring that great science is being funded and that taxpayer dollars are being spent effectively and efficiently.

People leave academic jobs to be program officers at NSF and other agencies. Many programs have trouble recruiting for these permanent positions. The damage this will do to US science will be long lasting. #academicsky

The Dems on the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology have setup a site to collect info on the impact of the mass firings at federal science agencies. If you were fired and are willing to share (including anonymously) it’s here democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

Fellow Mammalogists. As many of you are aware, science is in a state of turmoil in the United States. Recent efforts to drastically reduce government workforces and research funding for science will lead to many adverse consequences for Earth’s remaining natural ecosystems.

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

As scientists, we must continue to support diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Most importantly, broadening participation in science is the right thing to do. In addition, numerous peer-reviewed pubs have shown that diverse teams are more productive and innovative. Diversity has benefits!

Make sure you, your trainees, and anyone else who might listen to you understands what "indirects" actually are, how they are established, and what Universities contribute. H/T @rodallab.bsky.social Please share widely! www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxTD...

Happy International Day of Women in Science. The National Science Foundation’s list of flagged words includes both “Women” and “Female.”

The archiving of the NSF RCN-UBE (Research Coordination Networks - Undergraduate Biology Education) is frustrating and shortsighted. This program has funded so many excellent projects that keep students learning on the cutting edge and provide training for faculty-teachers to stay updated.

The BEDE Network 4th Annual meeting is in Santa Barbara, CA. Come join us to talk all things related to data science education in the life sciences! We develop tools to help undergrad educators "level up" + integrate more #datasci into courses. #Edusky

We finally got a ChatGPT generated review on a manuscript. So I wrote about how we handle these reviews is a sign of whether we have given up on peer review altogether.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

In 1980, a bipartisan Congress passed the Science and Engineering Equal Opportunities Act of 1980, which authorized the National Science Foundation “to promote the full use of human resources in science and technology through a comprehensive & continuing program to increase substantially

If you're wondering why scientists are freaking the fuck out about what's being described as a pause in spending, I have written an article just for you:

The letter also makes it clear that grantees should follow federal anti-discrimination laws, but implies that any effort towards DEIA is fundamentally at odds with legal requirements for anti-discrimination. I strongly disagree with such a narrow-minded opinion. www.eeoc.gov/fact-sheet/f...

The informaion webpage for NSF PIs: new.nsf.gov/executive-or... Help me understand how grant freezes, threats to rescind funding from federal contractors, and award delays help "ensure long-term U.S. competitiveness in all fields of science and engineering for our economic and national security."

The "PI Message" email from NSF states: "All NSF grantees must comply ... by ceasing all non-compliant grant and award activities...that uses or promotes the use of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) principles and frameworks or violates federal anti-discrimination laws."

Got my "message to the PI community" email from NSF last night... Frankly, the language is insulting and the guidance for "compliance" is nonexistent. This is not normal. Screaming into the void now. [Yes, I know that chaos, frustration, and destruction is the whole point...]

NSF grantees - people who have already received their grants based on a previously funded and approved research proposal - are being told to stop any activities related to DEI and accessibility. Call this what it is: government censorship of ongoing research projects. www.opm.gov/policy-data-...

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.
