After hearing from a Republican member who IS a licensed cosmetologist saying this is an important bill, she supports it, and it won't extend required training hours; Rep Dufault, who honestly doesn't seem to know anything about this topic, says the bill is unnecessary. #waleg

the more democrats concede to the republican war on trans people, the more that signals to the public that trans people are a problem and should be stigmatized.

I know it can be very frustrating (trust me, I’ve been there), but hang in there! Legislation is not the only way change happens, and we have so many people doing so much good work in this state. And next session is 10 short months away…

Every Dem’s guest should be a purged federal worker.

I would love to have a year round legislature, but it wouldn’t stop bills from dying in committee. Because there’s no limit on # of bills per member, some bills get introduced that are just really not ready to advance without more work, and the committee process gives those time to be vetted.

While I keep a weather eye on the Appropriations activity, I'm also taking today to prep and reset so I can be in the best place to be effective during the House floor session next week. Cleaning, laundry, meal prep -- I want to look and feel my best so I an show up the best for the work #waleg

So you give yourself a little while to mourn and then you pick yourself up and get prepped for next session -- which is only 10 months away! There are no permanent defeats around here. #waleg

Part of what makes this job so hard is you have to put your whole self and heart into a policy, form the best coalition of stakeholders and partners, fight for it like hell, and it can still fail for reasons totally out of your control and having nothing to do with how good/bad the policy is #waleg

With the current budget deficit, any bills that are seen to start "new programs" -- even if just expanding on successful pilots like guaranteed admissions -- face an extreme uphill battle. We fought hard for this bill and took it pretty far, so I'm optimistic we will be successful next time #waleg

Unfortunately, the bill I really worked on for this session with the strong support of the Governor -- HB 1557, giving guaranteed admission to state universities for qualified students -- isn't scheduled for exec as of now. I'm a little crushed, but hope to try again next session #waleg

The Transportation committee finished its work yesterday so I have no committee meetings today, but closely watching Appropriations activity. HB 1515, my outdoor alcohol service flexibility bill for the World Cup made it, and it looks like Transit Oriented Development may also...🤞🏾#waleg

I’ll see if I can chat with DOL about it this summer and what’s possible. I meant to ask them when they came to the committee and I forgot!

Rep Nance worked really hard on this! I'm definitely interested to see how local areas will act on the taxing authority if passed -- I was persuaded by speakers at the hearing that counties want to tax themselves for this and have partnerships they want to activate so let's set them free. #waleg

Once we get through this we'll be in caucus to do some intensive bill and legislative work, but first, gotta get through the plate hearings. #waleg

Bless, the director of the WA state beekeepers association is here to talk about this bill seriously. A reminder that pollinators ARE actually very important to food production across the world. #waleg

Rep Taylor asks "Who is the greatest performer of all time who also has a group of fans known as the Bey-hive" Rep Dent -- statistically the least likely person in the legislature to know the answer to this question -- is stumped. #waleg

Rep Barkis shares that he earned a beekeeping merit badge as a Boy Scout, which apparently is no longer offered. Rep Dent responds with another bee pun. Things are out of control. #waleg

Wow the next special license plate we're hearing is about bees 🐝🐝 and would support pollinator research and education #waleg

Apparently Rep Rude -- who is testifying now -- collects stagecoaches? Like covered wagon type things. #waleg

Let the record show the Rs have decided to be absent, but the rest of us voted "aye" #waleg

There is an amendment to lengthen the time period of required affordability on the housing developments, which we are passing now. #waleg

Rep Zahn speaks very nicely to how this bill will help religious organizations build housing and there are lots of good examples of that in her district on the Eastside of King County. #waleg

Ok they're not here. The grown ups are gonna run the bill. #waleg
comment in response to post
The Republicans are apparently boycotting, so the Ds are just hanging out and in a few minutes we're gonna run the bill. #waleg

Thank God, it's over now. Time for caucus!

Also weirdly university license plates don't have to report their revenue generation? But based on # of renewals compared to plates that do report, the UW and WSU license plates generate a *lot*. WSU has 2x as many plate renewals. #waleg #GoCougs
