I'd describe my interests as eclectic if that didn't make me seem like a bit of a tool. But if the shoe fits... Urbansim, politics, history, cycling, football, and a whole bunch of other unhealthy obsessions. Sydney, NSW, Australia

It's kind of a bit like Chesterton's Fence, but flipped. "Maybe the fence is just fine as it is, and doesnt need to be turned into the berlin wall for no good reason" or something

Seems like mildly atypical sydney trains behaviour. But ultimately, it probably doesn't matter at all

They're modular designs, so can be tweaked to meet the needs of the particular site, but if you use them it fast-tracks the planning process www.theurbandeveloper.com/articles/nsw...

NSW, Australia is in the process of doing a similar thing. I've seen some complaints that it's not a silver bullet, but nothing is. Every bit helps www.planning.nsw.gov.au/government-a...

I don't know that I've ever met someone who thinks we'll get them. And that ranges from the unknowing to those who really should have a good sense of it. Plenty of boosters who think there's some cream to be skimmed off, but I don't know that even those guys think we're getting the subs

There are two levels of wink and nod going on in this piece. Here's the first. “Hey this obviously inferior thing to save to time. Oh, but you know, take tons of time to do it carefully and not in an inferior way.” Once you grant people permission, they'll cut corners under time pressure.

Here's the second. How many people who are so eager to save time on a review that they use an LLM to summarize their own notes are going to take the time to install a local LLM? Versus how many will think "well, I'm in a hurry and how would anyone ever know?" This is profoundly irresponsible.

A salutary reminder about the power of the Gell-Mann amnesia effect, and to always be at least wary of claims made in any domain where expertise is needed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gell-Ma...

"The Weimar Republic was decadent" as a concept was created by by the nazis. It's a meme that still gets circulated, but it's an actual OG-nazi talking point

As someone who works in the field of regulatory reform, I feel that. The sky is always falling in, no matter how minor the change. Best not to change anything...

I had to laugh at getting served an AI-adjacent ad while listening to @edzitron.com goes on a well justified rant about how bad the finances of GenAI are! Programmatic ads are brilliant

I recently upgraded to a new phone. And just about the first thing I did was go through all the settings turning off, disabling or otherwise exorcising all the GenAI slop and bloat that came preloaded. I doubt I'm alone...
