Definitely a grim conversation our household was having starting in 2016 in Canada.

BREAKING: In response to our lawsuit, the National Endowment for the Arts will no longer force grant applicants to certify that they won't promote "gender ideology." This is a big step toward defeating the NEA's unconstitutional censorship.

@aoc.bsky.social: "Listen, if your representative is not doing a town hall, give me a ring... I'll say it right here, right now: if a deep red Republican district wants to have an honest conversation, even if it's with someone they disagree with, I'm willing to do that."

Yep.

A key takeaway from Columbia should be that compliance does not buy safety. Unis are viewing the admin's attack on higher ed as a prisoner's dilemma (best strategy: comply), leading to a collectively worse outcome. The only way out is collective action, & unlike true PD, unis can coordinate action.

In light of the news about Columbia, I want to reiterate a point below by me and Levitsky: universities, collectively, are among the most economically powerful and geographically thick sectors in the US. If they stood up together in opposition to this tyranny, they would be incredibly powerful.

We need some better language for pushing back against what the administration is doing. They’re not “ending DEI.” No. They're firing women and people of color in the military. They’re forbidding whole fields of research. They’re erasing trans people from existence.

As the Trump administration & many state governments appear poised to accelerate attacks on higher education as a public good, the AAUP urges colleges & universities to resist the coming onslaught of political interference & defend the core values of higher education. 🧵 www.aaup.org/news/against...

I am now waiting in awe for the wrath of Canada to descend upon this DeSantis hubris.

Just got an email from the Fulbright Association. As of right now, funding has been cut off to 12,500 US citizens currently abroad and and more than 7,400 foreigner scholars and students in the United States

Just know: Americans are pushing back. Nothing good comes from erasing that.

Do not comply in advance. You give away everything and get nothing.

"In the 19th century, it was incredibly dangerous to be a child. As of 1900, about 18 percent, or nearly one in five, American children died before their fifth birthday. ..." What changed? Better sanitation, medical advances - and vaccines. www.vox.com/health/40268...

The hard tight is recruiting via ingrained, internalized misogyny. Ophie Dokie: “it doesn't matter if many of the women who have gone down the right wing rabbit hole still identify as liberal, because they've already begun adopting a fundamentally right wing ideology towards women.”

This is a fundamental human rights violation.

The Republican-led Senate is fine with this because Elon deigned to give them his phone number in exchange for all their constitutional powers.

I'm a proud mother. Whether I'm walking my son to school or reading him a bedtime story, I do everything to make sure he grows up loved and cared for. And for the sponsor of the drag ban to say that my existence is a fetish is false & cruel. I'm glad we were able to defeat this hateful bill today.

Odd that there’s one on Newfoundland but not one in Nova Scotia?

This is the kind of thing that @abenewman.bsky.social and I talk about in #UndergroundEmpire. Soi-disant allies can't rely on U.S. systems any more.

Take it from a trans climate journalist: anti-renewables bills are *the new thing* in Republican states. And it risks completely derailing the energy transition, no matter what Trump does. My latest for @heatmap.news #greensky #climatesky #energysky heatmap.news/plus/the-fig...

It is a failure of reading but its roots are OWNERSHIP. Coloniser extractive mentality: what can I take from this text (sci-fi, philosophy, games, whatever) to use & own. SF is more directly about (whether pro or anti) colonisation & mining than most Anglo realist fiction so it's more usable.

Punitive indifference is both morally and economically costly.

What a bunch of hateful people who are excited about ruining other people’s lives, because to them other people are just a propagandized abstraction.

Um.

Holy shit are we fucked, pack it in.

This is why Canada needs to cancel the F-35 purchases and the use of AEGIS in our Navy. We cannot trust the Americans anymore. This really, really sucks. As a student I participated in TACOM and TARDEC vehicle competitions. But we cannot allow this to happen to us. #ElbowsUp.
