Great job alert: ProPublica is hiring a computational journalist, "someone who will use technology and data to identify and unlock stories that would otherwise be out of reach." Salary: $120K-$140K Remote: ✅ Come join us!

If people were really just dying from chronic diseases then how come they weren’t dying from their chronic diseases until after March, 2020?

Just so you know, I just tweeted this.

You were taught that educated, single, child-free women are unwanted and pathetic because a woman who is unmanageable through attachment and enraged at the exploitation all around her is a very dangerous thing to an institution that needs to manage and exploit her in order to survive.

Elon Musk is what happens when you create a society that believes technology can achieve anything and collective action can achieve nothing

Oof. That Gaiman article is a lot. Please think before you read it. The word was out but this is so much detail. Grieving because I liked his work. Reminds me of why I have no heroes. There are aspects of people I greatly admire but we only see a one dimensional view of anyone famous or popular.

Washington Post October 25, 2024: “We are returning to our roots of not endorsing …” Washington Post Today: well, except for all these people. Then definitely back to our roots.

Looked at my “feed” before I deleted my Facebook account, and see little loss. Overwhelmed with ads and algorithmic content boosts. Instagram is next to go.

I really, really don't want to do this, but let's do a bit (just a LITTLE BIT) of fact checking about what Zuck said on the Joe Rogan podcast, because this is something I not only followed closely, but also spent time *talking to the actual people at Meta who dealt with this* which WAS NOT ZUCK.

When folks mask during a wildfire it reminds me that 1) people still have masks around. 2) people are totally capable of masking. 3) people are only willing to mask if it means protecting themselves.

I think it makes sense to think of insurers as an indicator species. It shouldn't shock anyone they aren't in it for altruistic reasons. It is a business, dependent on risk estimation, and they have the resources to look further ahead and more deeply than any local or regional government ever could.

We saw it unfold, live, right there on our televisions and phones. We know what Jan 6, 2021 was, and we know what it meant.

I want my appliances to be dumb and my elected officials to be smart, not the other way round

Straights: You’re still avoiding Covid? It’s been 5 years! Me, a homosexual scholar of viruses: I’ve been avoiding HIV for 20 years, lol. You think viruses care about a few turns of the Gregorian calendar? They’ve been hanging around bats for 100 million years!

The thing with generative AI is that it’s not a technical marvel, it’s an economic one. The ability to shift away from mass human learning and creativity to machine imitation with higher paid (and centralized) oversight is a movement of supply and change in, and hiding of, cost basis.

It’s not just your imagination, my multilingual friends… how you express and process your feelings depends on the languages you learned as a child: Emotion semantics show both cultural variation and universal structure www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Everything stated in this post is a provable fact. You are entitled to your own opinion. You are not entitled to your own facts. Looking at YOU, 2020 election-deniers.

Mark my words: right now, it's an editorial cartoon being killed by the brass of The Washington Post. Pretty soon, it's a major story about Trump's corruption being killed by the brass. This will happen. Get ready for it.

Here’s to a year full of love and positivity. #Severance film still #13 Happy New Years Day☀️

Masks work against more than COVID.

This is a problem I consistently highlight. Tech is predicated on “move fast and break things.” The only way ethics are injected into tech is by force. They won’t stop unless there is a significant punishment to slow them down. We desperately need more regulations and accessibility requirements.

I understand there is some discourse currently going on about "clout" here on Bluesky and while I can understand why people can be focused on it and how to achieve it I must tell you my entire posting strategy is and always has been "This was in just in my brain and now it is your problem too"

Hey @jay.bsky.team any progress on paid verification? I’m seeing an awful lot of celebrity handle grabs and look alikes (love Ben Stiller but I don’t think @benstillerprivatep.bsky.social would really follow me, for example).

Bluesky was never special. We make the places we're in special by how we treat each other. Never forget our power to cultivate beautiful spaces.

Well this is horrifying. The wave of stories over the summer about Blake Lively being a horrible person were deliberately engineered. After Blake Lively alleged sexual harassment on the set of It Ends With Us, Justin Baldoni hired Johnny Depp's PR person to smear her.

please mask and wash your hands and test if you don’t feel well. so many people are getting sick and getting others sick. stay home if you’re sick. exposing countless workers to illness so you can get your holiday shopping done or whatever is gross.

smoke gets in your eyes. wax gets in your ears. chopsticks get in your nose. things happen in a restaurant, is all im saying

And the fact that we all seem to instinctively know it.

And to think, Time picked a raging fascist for their Person of the Year, when they could have picked the bravest person on the planet. This is why no one gives a shit about legacy media anymore, they're bootlicking their way into their own obsolescence.

In Iceland, on Christmas Eve, people give each other books so they can spend the evening drinking cocoa & reading. It’s called, Jolabokaflod, the Christmas book flood. I’ve never been more in love with Iceland than I am right now ♥️♥️

Another example of the rush to “we can scale with AI and save money” without a view to the long term. stocks.apple.com/AzGeGH8IjTm-... Not an Amazon apologist (or defending middle management for that matter, we all have horror stories), but good managers help apprentices grow.
