I’ve written something for @sojo.net about what’s been happening in LA: sojo.net/articles/opi... We see the logic of domination at work, and we’ve got to reject it and commit to the brave politics of care instead.

It is impossible not to read this in conjunction with the Supreme Court's heartrbreaking, awful decision in Skrmetti allowing states to deny transgender teens the health care they need.

Conservatives’ constant reframing of “expanded rights for all” as “special rights for a few” is immensely destructive, and it flows from the philosophy (most refined in Trumpism) that if something is not personally beneficial to me, then it is a loss for me and must be opposed.

The United States has 340 million people in it and each of them is a distraction from all the rest. We should never worry about what will help or protect any individual or subpopulation, but only for what will, in the abstract, help everyone equally, in the exact same way.

Since folks are talking about the ways that cops treat people, here is a poem I think about often. CN: violence

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? You absolutely can lie via data & math & everything about how you present data is an argument for how to interpret/understand it Everything we know is founded on best guesses & analogies All technoscience is enmeshed with human values

Looking for some mathematical reading this summer? Perhaps this is a place to start! #iTeachMath ♾️

COVID 'razor blade throat' rises as new subvariant spreads in California

Last week was quite a time to be out of the U.S., but I kept up with the news while traveling to France for a math conference. Here are some unusual sights from Paris.

SETEC ASTRONOMY

Tomorrow is World #Tessellation Day (and MCEscher's birthday). I usually try to do a tessellation round up post, if you have one or more you want to send my way!

My post today on Grading for Growth is a reflection on how I experienced active learning and alternative grading as a student, and how that helped give me the confidence to use them as an instructor. gradingforgrowth.com/p/drawing-on...

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon

“Education isn't a curve or a line or a scan or a graph. It isn't an output, a product. It is a process, sure. But to conceive of education as a process of knowing that can be engineered and fine-tuned is still to speak in the metaphors of the machine. Education is immeasurable; it is messy.”

This is true for all of us y’all.

A prayer for the country.

The 2025 Grading Conference starts tomorrow! Follow and use #TheGradingConference to see snippets from our incredible sessions and participate in the conversation!! Also, check out today's 100th episode of The Grading Podcast where we talk about the origins of the Conference! www.thegradingpod.com

I know Things Are Happening, but I wanted to share that I just finished Someone You Can Build a Nest In by @wiswell.bsky.social, and it was delightful. A protagonist like none other, and a splendid conflict between a monster and the family of the woman she loves. www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...

This is literally the plot of @wiswell.bsky.social’s Someone You Can Build A Nest In.

MY MONSTER JUST WON A NEBULA AWARD "Thank you" feels too small, but thank you to everyone who has supported this weird, little book. To everybody who it made feel a little less alone? Remember: we all belong.

!!!!!!!!!!!! @wiswell.bsky.social

Toad opened the front door. He looked out into the night. Frog was not there. “I am worried,” said Toad.

“Squared off”

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

What a shot.

Greetings! A large immigration operation and subsequent protest in Paramount, CA has led to a large amount of gas and “less lethal” munitions. Situation ongoing. Will update as I can.

It’s a difficult proposition for undergrads to work through, but choosing a major isn’t really about what kind of jobs you want to do so much as what sorts of questions you want to think about or *how* you want to think about questions throughout your life.

People keep quoting this and saying "stop using AI!" But this is just a regular Google search. The issue is that Google now shows AI results first. Some people know to scroll past them or click the "Web" tab, but many do not.

Talk to people irl, even smart people, and you'll quickly find that the vast majority do not know that AI makes things up, or plagiarizes, or destroys the environment. Knowing the things about AI we take as given here is like knowing internet memes; people who aren't Very Online tend to have no clue

Keeping Bluesky open, but only to browse @ruralindexing.bsky.social.

Timeline cleanse: the 2yo has lately been singing the alphabet song in its infinite loop version—“Now I know my ABCs, next time JK LMNOP…” with just enough of the toddler mumble to make the transition seamless.

Cardiff is hosting the 38th British Topology Meeting from 9th - 11th September 2025. The registration is now open! Come along if you are looking for some interesting talks about all things topological. Details can be found here: sites.google.com/view/btm38 #MathSky #topology #AcademicSky

If you're the type of mathematics teacher who likes to give exercises requiring exact values of trig functions, but is bored with the old 30°-45°-60° grind, then the Ailles rectangle may be for you! (Seriously, this thing is why I can write down sin(15°), cos(75°) etc without using identities.)

I have adopted the theory i learned from @todd-kemp.bsky.social, which posits the existence of a “blackboard field” that increases the likelihood of making certain mistakes the closer you get to the board. I explain to students that the theory transfers to whiteboards as well.

AI-generated Bible videos are going viral because Christian actually love them and make them. Here's why: www.404media.co/why-do-chris...

Fascinating lecture by Rudin—“Set Theory: An Offspring of Analysis” www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBcW... In brief, it describes how studying the wave equation led to trigonometric series, which eventually led to Cantor’s introduction of limit points and the notion of countable sets.

Read this whole thread. Consumer-facing LLMs and generative "A.i." are destroying the ethics and brains of our entire society. Shame on any educational institution that accommodates this trash.

One way of thinking about it is, why wouldn’t *I* use ChatGPT to write a paper? 1. It’s a matter of self-respect. 2. I believe my writing says something basic about who I am. 3. I believe research and writing are valuable activities. +

Worth reading. And, spoiler warning:

I’ve heard enough.
