In Indiana, 16 and 17-year-olds can now work the same hours as adults and are no longer restricted by school hours and days. They also can work overnight without an adult and perform hazardous agriculture jobs. Many 14- and 15-year-olds can now work during school hours as well.

The Trudeau government formally apologized Thursday for trauma caused to generations of Inuit people in Arctic Bay because of forced relocations in the 1930s and ‘40s. Families were promised they could move home within two years but it never happened. That's on Nation to Nation.

Please support this wonderful artist. I got a piece as a gift recently and it's a treasure.

It's a small thing in the overall catastrophe but I'm an illustrator of philosophers so I notice. There's one account that has been single-handedly polluting the web with AI-generated philosopher portraits that look vaguely authentic. These go with AI-generated essays about those philosophers.

Doug Ford promised to fix Ontario’s universities. Instead, he made them worse. Former Laurentian University economics professor David Leadbeater takes a closer look at how corporatization is threatening the province’s post-secondary education system: thewalrus.ca/inside-doug-ford...

Cardiff University is proposing to scrap modern language degrees, incl. German - a deeply concerning step: www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/card... Read about the vital role of language skills here: britishgermanassociation.org/11849-2/ A petition is underway: www.change.org/p/save-mlang...

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Cardiff University's Executive Board has announced that it intends to cease all provision of Modern Languages degrees. Sign the petition below in solidarity with staff and students of the School of Modern Languages at Cardiff University: www.change.org/p/save-mlang...

Repost this if you regularly use your local library. Bonus points if you tell us your favorite thing about your library!

Just got the dreaded email. University of Iowa is halting all NIH grant submissions. Losing a generation of scientists here will send the state backwards. What a travesty.

If you're an educator or education is your interest, consider starting a freedom school in your communities. We started with a summer program for young people in Chicago. Children's Defense Fund has been offering literacy based freedom schools since the early 1990s. etc etc etc.

hey all, just boosting this again. Thick Press put out this amazing (& super relevant) book called the Encyclopedia of Radical Helping-- all about community-based projects and tactics. I was lucky enough to be a contributor. if that's up your alley, here's the link: thickpress.com?productId=3058

Probably the best photograph I’ve ever taken of some ducks.

"A liberal order, in which people develop their own ideas about what is worthwhile in life, requires that people have a language and culture that permits conceiving of what is worthwhile."

Fun fact: if you're buying from a creator on etsy, you can reduce their etsy selling fees from 6.5% to 2.5% by ordering via 'shopname.etsy.com' instead of 'etsy.com/shopname' or searching from the main site. It costs you the same but the creator makes more

Just learned that anyone can register in person at a New York Public Library (without US residence) and access remotely 140 Proquest databases (I believe a wealthy European university might have access to a couple dozen at best)

Copied (with permission) from a discworld group I’m in if anyone can help even if it’s just a share
