By all means, we don't want open government anymore. Authoritarianism thrives on opacity.

Roger Stone wants the FBI to violate a constitutional right “of anyone deemed to be an ‘enemy of the state.’ We can decide what actually is an ‘enemy’ later so the base doesn’t flip out.” I rep whistleblowers who’ve been called enemies of the state. This is dangerous & deadly.

“”We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations," wrote the staffers…"However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments at the United States DOGE Service.”” www.nbcnews.com/politics/dog...

Trade sovereignty for ‘peace’ ? “The American demands amount to extremely severe war reparations upon Ukraine, far more severe than was demanded…of Germany after either world war. But this demand is directed against Ukraine, and Ukraine is not the aggressor.” 🤔 snyder.substack.com/p/recoup-the...

Some of us have been warning about this and calling for anti-SLAPP laws (both federal and state) for years and years and years. And I'm not stopping now. Defamation law has been so widely abused to chill speech and so few people know it.

The federal judge who just blocked Dept. of Ed & OPM from sharing sensitive data w/ DOGE was co-counsel in defending NSA whistleblower @thomasdrake.bsky.social’s protection of our privacy f/ NSA!⚖️ #PrivacyMatters #PropsDebbieBoardman storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…

Keep the promise and experiment of America or give in to the dystopia & autocracy of an inverted AmeriKa? If history any guide, there are those in power who always look to restrict, censor, control or even take the rights & sovereignty of the people & society away. www.c-span.org/clip/state-l...

“…the plan to end multiculturalism is proceeding apace. Much of the chaos, lawlessness, & destruction of the past few weeks can be understood as part of…administration’s central ideological project: restoring America’s traditional hierarchies of race & gender. Call it the “Great Resegregation.” “

Statement from the Musk-appointed head of SSA celebrating the deletion of research grants studying the financial security of the older adults and the disabled. Just one way that the richest man in the world is dictating societal priorities. www.ssa.gov/news/press/r...

I want to say again to academics who are interested in public writing. Look locally. Sure national outlets are good and I do that too, but this kind of visibility in your community can have a real impact.

Removing Judge Advocates General who would uphold the rule of law in the military - so dangerous

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Every day, the goals become clearer: The point of DOGE is not efficiency, but regime change www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

This, from my colleague @pamherd.bsky.social , is a great piece about Trump’s attack on disabled people, and the real harm it is causing, including to one of UM’s outstanding students. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

As ever: never trust a government that pretends it’s possible to create backdoors in encryption only they (or “the good guys”) can use. This stuff always leaves everyone less secure, benefitting criminals and adversaries. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I'm older than a lot of folks here, but I grew up in an era when we were taught, half-heartedly, that there would not be a nuclear war because of the deterrent of Mutually Assured Destruction. They never mentioned the Doofus Exception.

Just discovered that Don Bacon posted this last Friday.

Russia-linked hackers have been phishing Ukrainian military with Signal QR codes that look like group invites but instead add a linked device that eavesdrops on messages. Update Signal now to get its fix for a tactic that’s likely to spread beyond Ukraine. www.wired.com/story/russia...

If you restate the question as “why are we hearing the worst stories of federal workers harmed by vindictive authoritarians with a penchant for punishing dissent with harassment and violence via anonymous Reddit posts, press reports, and lawsuit filings” I think the answer gets a bit easier to see

The argument that Trump Media Group is making about a judge's interpretation of his country's laws is the same argument that Musk made about Australia's eSafety commissioner when she sought the removal of terrorist content on X under the country's Online Safety Act. 1/

NSF fired 168 yesterday. Today its staff directory page says this:

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

The unparalleled, meteoric level of resignations & #whistleblowing is proportional to the sheer level of corruption. Stay safe. 🗣️🙏⚖️ whisper.exposefacts.org

“DOGE going into all these agencies ... with a wrecking ball and no understanding of the business logic and structure behind the code ... poses real risks to the privacy and persona-level data of millions of people across all of those records.” - @thomasdrake.bsky.social

Musk claimed 150 year olds in the system are receiving checks. Computer genius?! 🤡 Uhhhh…Duhhh…Social Security runs on an older version of COBOL and doesn’t use date or time types.

2 grim observations from @alanrozenshtein.com re the implications of Trump’s TikTok Ex Order for the rule of law: 1) Oracle’s (et al.) decision to rely on federal non-enforcement despite enormous statutory penalties gives Trump leverage to extract from them personal tribute (my words, not Alan’s) …

I'm seeing some context missing from Vance's speech, falsely accusing Europe of abandoning free speech. He was making very specific references to Elon's (and right wingers like Alex Jones) role in inciting violence in the UK, and prosecution of right winger for violence that they say is speech.
