I’ve given multiple talks on Many Analysts projects that one could consider “critical”, among them one that contained this rather spicy slide critical of critics of this type of project.>

The Precision Psychopathology + Dynamic Immunopsychiatry Lab at UPenn will be hiring 1-2 post-bacc RAs and potentially a postdoc this year Immune/phlebotomy/blood preprocessing exp will be a plus. Formal posting will follow in a few weeks Excited to recruit the founding members of this team :)

While NIH funded researchers have found a potential cure for one of the most deadly cancers around, Trump and Musk are continuing an illegal NIH grant freeze, threatening so many potential life saving scientific advances. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

This is a campaign of eradication. www.statnews.com/2025/02/25/c...

Breaking: Trump's full trans military ban has just dropped. Quickly reading it, it appears to be a full separation from the military for all transgender military members, and states being trans is inconsistent with "honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity." A sad day for this nation.

The New York Times: "We need more data on trans healthcare, it shouldn't be allowed" Trump: "Fuck the very concept of data" NYT: *crickets* www.statnews.com/2025/02/25/c...

Causal inference iceberg! What's missing?

Since Psychology Today no longer lets you update articles, people have been asking for a new live list of the studies examining the impact of gender-affirming medical interventions for adolescent gender dysphoria on mental health. Here you go in my latest subtack! open.substack.com/pub/jackturb...

NIH cuts are getting the press, but VA research is getting slashed too. What do we lose when VA research goes away? Here's some greatest hits: The nicotine patch, invention of the cardiac pacemaker, first successful liver transplant, development of the CAT/CT scan prospect.org/health/2025-...

KEY JOB ALERT: The New York Attorney General's Office is looking for a "Special Counsel for LGBTQIA Rights." The office is looking for an "experienced litigator" to "analyze federal policy and lead responses to federal actions that threaten LGBTQIA people." More info: ag.ny.gov/sites/defaul...

LGBTQ federal workers say they're terrified they're about to be fired for their gender identity, sexual orientation, or past efforts to support other queer and trans employees—in other words, a second Lavender Scare. Honored to have their trust with this story: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

In the USDA, multiple people have been asked to report the names of LGBTQ employee resource group leaders to higher-ranking officials. “People came to us because they needed community, needed connection. We were trying to keep each other safe. Now, we’re all just this big target.”

Elon Musk and DOGE are attacking our Constitution, stealing our data, and illegally freezing Congressional funding for key programs like Meals on Wheels and veterans health. That's why I introduced the BAD DOGE Act to delete DOGE. It’s time to put a stop to this lawlessness.

Don't forget "no research has" and "more research is needed" throughout the intro. Also critical is to NEVER interpret null findings. Always come from the perspective that null findings mean you just didn't quite figure out how to test the hypothesis in the right way. HIDDEN MODERATORS PEOPLE.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

BREAKING: As Elon Musk said on X would be happening, I can now report that all federal employees are receiving an email directing them to provide “approx. 5 bullets of what you accomplished last week.” It directs them not to send any classified information and is due by 11:59p Monday.

My second presentation at #SPSP2025, where I looked at racialized sexual minority men's experiences of discrimination, and how these experiences are associated with their relationships and mental health outcomes. Slides 📽️: osf.io/9dhzj Summary 🧵 [1/12]

Following a loud public outcry about job cuts at the National Parks Service — and a relentless media campaign from outdoors enthusiasts across the country — it looks like the Trump administration has blinked. via @jackdolan.bsky.social

I always shock my students a bit when I tell them that quantitative data is just qualitative data that has already been interpreted numerically.

For those keeping track, we are now at 2 weeks with no new R01s funded. Still only 18 new ("01") grants are fellowships/Ks, a few admin supplements, one R35, and one R03. Same 2-week period in 2024: 143 new grants were awarded and 41 R01s. Devastating.

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

Happy Black History Month

The Trump Administration is maintaining the NIH grant freeze despite lawsuits challenging the order, a Nature article reported today. Science funding in the US is already lagging, leaving researchers in limbo. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

1. Despite Republican attacks in recent years, America is queerer than ever before. LGBTQ+ identification has risen to 9.3% in the last Gallup Poll, a huge jump from 7.6% last year. I cover the latest numbers in my story. Subscribe to support my journalism.

Today, I presented my work on sexual minority men's beliefs about HIV undetectability, PrEP use, and partner sorting behaviors at the #SPSP2025 pre-conference "LGBTIQ+ Research Across the Globe"

Timothy Snyder is an expert of modern authoritarianism.

DHS has removed manual guidance barring investigations solely based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This is a prerequisite to targeting the LGBTQ community with criminal investigations solely based on being LGBTQ. news.bgov.com/bloomberg-go...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Incredible news! More hospitals have returned to offering gender affirming care after Trump's executive order was blocked. Moments after publishing our story on hospitals returning, Childrens National DC announced a return to care. And JUST now, Colorado Children's is back to giving care! AMAZING

The cost-saving claims don’t hold up. Every dollar in NIH research grants generates $2.46 in economic activity, research shows—a total of $93 billion in 2023 alone. “It’s incredible to me that we would give up this thing that has such obvious societal benefits,” says biologist Mark Peifer.

This is very good to read!! The kicker, about how Republicans understand the importance of intersectionality (and that's why they are trying to untermine it) more than Democratic leadership does, is super thoughtful and something I haven't really seen pinpointed before!!!

The protests going on right now are not the same as 2016 or 2020. You are seeing a social movement in its Proto phases before we know what the final form looks like. This is something much bigger than anything We’ve seen probably since occupy much larger and angrier then 2016 or 20 time to turn it up

Wherein Elon says the quiet, corrupt part out loud: He intends to steal the private IRS data of his political enemies. How soon before he does the same to his economic competitors? Or you?

NEW: Three former U.S. Attorneys ask to file a brief in Eric Adams' case before Judge Dale Ho "in support of the Court’s authority to conduct a factual inquiry" into DOJ's actions leading to its Friday request to dismiss the case. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

BREAKING: DOJ refuses to provide Judge Chutkan with any numbers regarding last Friday's firings. DOJ also refuses to make any commitment regarding what "personnel actions" the seven agencies at issue — OPM, Education, Labor, HHS, Energy, Transportation, Commerce — might take in the next two weeks.

Academics: Pls complete Lorenzo's survey. It's super short and really helpful to get at information about how recent EOs impact our work.

Great history lesson from @lakens.bsky.social with the @psicostat.bsky.social group at the University of Padova. History is repeating itself, but we also get a little better after each crisis was the positive take away for me.

Real fun to be a regular plane passenger sitting in an airport today.

On the heels of multiple airplane disasters, including one less than a month ago that killed 67 people, and after years of warnings about our understaffed air traffic control system, Trump has begun firing hundreds of FAA air traffic control workers. apnews.com/article/doge...

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.
