call your reps and senators. remind them these cuts to NIH will prevent tomorrow's cures and treatments. tell your story to friends, neighbors, colleagues, patient groups. advocate for the pivotal role of NIH in improving human health and disease and the importance of sustained funding. /fin

thanks @joshtpm.bsky.social your herculean efforts to raise awareness. 316,000 women in the US will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. if you have breast cancer or love someone who does, 3/n

between academic scientists and industry. before Herceptin was approved by the FDA in 1998, 60% of women with this type of cancer died within 3 years. now, the 5-year survival rate is in the 90th percentile. we have a fighting chance to live. 2/n

without NIH, i would not be here. i have an aggressive form of early-stage breast cancer (Her2+/ER-) and am taking chemo + a monoclonal antibody (Herceptin) that was developed based on years of discoveries from NIH (NCI)-funded scientists, in a great example of a public-private partnership 1/n

i haven't made it to this last episode yet. between your fondness for squirrels (squirrel hill!), the pitt (because here), and the steelers, if you travel this way anytime, let's connect!

4) explain public-private partnerships - a lot of folks (including Dems) don't understand much about how this works 5) use resources that show the impact of NIH research by state www.coalitionforlifesciences.org/learn/state-... or www.nih.gov/about-nih/wh...

what may resonate 1) economic impact not just to the lab or university but to the region - jobs, ripple-effects that layoffs would have 2) any US competitive advantage 3) if research can be linked to therapeutics, treatments, improved health

agree. key is in-person visits by folks who are both prepared for the visit and trained in advocacy. i just heard a story of someone who "took the bait" on a visit to their congressperson and the visit did not end well (e.g. shouting). this can 100% backfire.

Thanks for this post. Besides an us v. them vibe, the editorial smacks of the worst kind of elitism. Ironically, part of the reason why the author can claim that these jobs are superfluous is that a good admin makes the magic happen without burdening faculty.

Thank you for this thorough, compelling, and candid reporting. A devastating read but too important not to be told. Looking forward to your next story.

we had a zoom w/our PO ~2 weeks ago. it felt like he was in a hostage video. he didn't say anything without our asking, and to each our of questions, his response was that we knew as much as he did which, fair point, was probably true.
