Long before pussy hats and Teslas, there were still women marching against fascism.

Even in talking with “fiscal conservatives,” this is the kind of field that government *should* be involved in. It is a public good that does not necessarily serve a profit motive and therefore gets unaddressed by private industry. Instead we’re spending on gestapo and gulags.

I feel like we need to keep saying this because it’s so insane: This is a legal U.S. resident who has been detained for over a month now for his political opinions.

*Come Together Voice* He fuck, custom sofa he kill, holy father He get, mocked in Greenland he is, owned on Twitter He was, picked so no one would kill the prez What the fuck is up with the shape of his head? Come together, right now, blame JD

The Pope living just long enough to have JD Vance visit the Vatican so his Secretary of State could tell Vance to his face that he doesn’t understand Catholicism is a level of hating I could only aspire to in my wildest dreams.

It is essential for the rule of law that everyone involved in this end up in prison. Nothing else is a sufficient deterrent against the intentional, repeated abuse of government power to systematically deny fundamental rights.

what exactly would be different? Garcia wasn't given a hearing or formal deportation hearings. Ignored and flouted habeas requests. What would stop them from claiming a citizen is a non-citizen without there being any procedure of due process? (Nothing)

going to need to start hearing from governors what they intend to do to protect residents of their states from the federal government

This is just scapegoating Jews again with extra steps. It’s ensuring that we catch the backlash for a policy that is going to be used to keep out/deport/send to the gulag people who have done nothing wrong.

The ADL thinks it's good for the Jews that an authoritarian regime is arresting dissidents for thought crimes. That is not my lesson from thousands of years of Jewish history!

A negative example of a dynamic many centre-right & centre-left politicians seem to have forgotten - political leaders can change public opinion, they do not always have to follow the polls.

Four children of Columbia University's first Jewish President (1980-1993) Michael I. Sovern write in the Washington Post: "Our father…would be disgusted by the government’s coercion of Columbia, purportedly in the name of our religion." www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

I feel like this isn't spoken about enough among Americans. *Many* of the freedoms and rights Americans enjoy (some have already been lost) CAME AT A HIGH COST. Did that many white Americans really memory-hole that part of their history? I'm thinking yes... yes, they did.

This is going to get worse, not better. Never underestimate the American public’s thirst for performative cruelty towards The Other: defendants, foreigners, anyone they’ve been conditioned to see as less than human. We’re the country that made lynchings into picnics.

Polls show that 70% of Americans feel that the United States is still a functioning democracy. But in this El Salvadoran prison, they aren't so sure.

the speed at which these guys have broken everything has given a lot of folks who should know better the impression that they are an unstoppable force and the only option is to negotiate the terms of surrender just because the clown car goes very fast does not mean it isn’t full of clowns

every person involved in this needs to be in prison

When civil society institutions — big law firms, Ivy League institutions — cave to Trump rather than fight what appear to be illegal demands, do they expect him to be satisfied and stop? Do they believe others should step in and fight where they have not?

The wealthiest man in the world has fully purchased the federal government of the United States. This is one of the most extraordinary crises in the history of this country and you need to ask whether your elected representatives are acting like it.

Please remember that you can't trust any politician who's willing to deny trans people their rights. That kind of "leader" will throw any and all of us under the bus if they think it benefits them. New Yorkers, D.R.E.A.M. - Don't Rank Eric or Andrew for Mayor.

I mean he should be removed from office tomorrow if any of the guardrails were even remotely in force instead, this will be the consensus legal opinion of the Republican party by 10 AM

If you think the lesson of Jewish history is “it’s good for a far-right authoritarian to disappear political opponents without due process,” then you’re a fucking moron. Chuck Schumer is a fucking moron.

This is why the talking heads do their best to never let trans people speak on live news tv. They know if people can just hear us talk about what’s going on the games up. They learned this lesson with gay marriage. If we aren’t on the news, we don’t exist.

These are the same Senate Democrats who lectured the base for years about the importance of preserving the filibuster so it would still be available when Democrats were in the minority

“The guy trying to kill us might try to kill us harder if we fight back” — Democrat proverb

whether they’re retiring or not this should be the last term for each of them

I do believe we’re facing a generational problem. We have Dems who’ve been in office so long that they think their job is just to get elected in the next cycle and not to govern and wield power. They worry too much about what Rs might weaponize and as a result they refuse to fight.

“If I let my house burn down, it should be easier to extinguish the embers later”

Hm.

Chuck Schumer Helps Pull Democrats Back From Brink Of Courage

shutting down the government highlights the value of government. not shutting it down accelerates its destruction. what are we doing here

if you find yourself reluctant to support the guy at Columbia because you find some of the politics he espoused distasteful or even abhorrent, you should know that this is exactly the reaction that they hoped for in choosing him as a target for unlawful detention based on political speech.

2020 Free Speech Absolutist: perhaps you don’t approve of everything bigots say but if they aren’t invited to teach kindergarteners to say slurs then freedom is dead. 2025 Free Speech Absolutist: it’s a hate crime whenever someone meets a cybertruck owners and fails to tell them they are cool

For all you "Not Yet A Constitutional Crisis" people: The kid at Columbia with a green card currently in secret ICE detention for thoughtcrime is a four alarm fire.
