For #FridayFinds - a small token of a #Roman family, found in York and on display at the Yorkshire Museum. Jet was a rare material in the ancient world and was usually reserved for expensive, luxury items. This suggests the token was made for one of York's upper class families.

#RomanFortThursday Harry's marched to Augusta Treverorum, - #Trier , which history of #Roman occupation dates to #JuliusCaesar. The city prospered through its amphitheatre & circus. Harry's stopped for a quick selfie with the Porta Nigra, the only surviving of 4 gates built around the city.

#OTD The ancient Roman festival of chariot races, Equirria, took place in the Campus Martius on February 27th and on March 14th. It was held in honour to Mars and it is said to date back to the time of Romulus. The Equirria was awaited by all the Romans all over the Empire.

Happy Birthday to #Roman #Emperor #Constantine born #OTD c 272. He was the first emperor to convert to Christianity, made numerous reforms to the empire & founded the city of Constantinople (Istanbul) on the site of Byzantium. He was declared emperor in York in 306 & ruled until his death in 337.

The 1st excavations at the #Roman fort of #Trimontium by James Curle began in February 1905 (120 years ago this month!) and were completed in 1910. In his own words, he did not realise 'how large an undertaking lay before me' - to mark this anniversary - Objects and images from Trimontium.

25 Feb AD138 #Roman emperor #Hadrian adopted #AntoninusPius as his son & successor on the condition that Antoninus would in turn adopt Marcus Aurelius & Lucius Verus. Antoninus married Hadrian's niece Faustina. He led a campaign into Scotland resulting in the construction of the #AntonineWall.

#MythologyMonday The satyr Ampelos is the personification of the grapevine and lover of Bacchus. The Greek poet Nonnus tells us Ampelos was killed by a wild bull after he mocked the goddess Selene. Bacchus transformed Ampelos's body into the first grape vine and created wine from his blood.

In Ancient Rome on February 22nd, the celebration of #Caristia or Cara Cognatio took place. On this day there weren't parades or big community festivals, but families used to gather together to remember the dead and, at the same time, to strenghten family bonds.

The Military Way, south of Hadrian's Wall, in beautiful winter sunshine. The Military Way is a modern name given to the #Roman road that was built to the south of the Wall & today part of it forms the Military Way path from Milking Gap near, Milecastle 38, to Walltown Quarry. #RomanBritain

"Ghosts of my fathers, go forth" - 21st Febmarked the Feralia celebrating the Manes, the spirits of deceased individuals, a day of mourning for the departed. #Romans made offerings at the tombs of their dead #ancestors such as wreaths, bread soaked in wine, salt, grain & violets.

#OTD 21 Feb 4AD, the #Roman Empire said farewell to Gaius Caesar aged 23. Gaius & his younger brother Lucius Caesar were raised by their grandfather #Augustus as his adopted sons & heirs to the empire. His parents were Agrippa & Julia the Elder. He was married to Livilla.

⚔️Battle of Lugdunum 197AD Septimius Severus’ victory established him as sole ruler after the Year of the 5 Emperors & chaotic civil wars. Rival forces totalled 150,000 troops. The more numerous Severan cavalry won victory. Clodius Abinus’ head was sent to Rome & his family murdered.

A vision of perfection - Kidlaw Hillfort, Lammermuir Hills, #Scotland for #hillfortswednesday - the archaeological evidence suggests much remodelling of the defences over time with traces of what may have once been a palisade trench evident & the outlines of 3 small roundhouses.

The #Roman fortress of Inchtuthill, Perth, was founded in the Agricola campaign (82-83AD) by the XX Valeria Victrix, the legion that founded Trimontium. 875,400 nails were found there. Inchtuthill was never built over & so provides the only complete plan of a legionary fortress in the Roman empire.

#OTD in 364 AD Emperor #Jovian died suffocating on poisonous heated fumes seeping from newly painted bedchamber walls. He had been on the way back to Constantinople since his elevation in June 363AD but never made it. Jovian was the last emperor to rule the whole empire during his entire reign

#Lupercalia was a #Roman pastoral festival observed every 15th Feb to celebrate the end of Winter, the start of seed sowing, purify the city, promote health & fertility. A goat & dog were sacrificed, the Luperci priests cut thongs from the hides & struck women on the hands to promote fertility.

We know about the famous #Roman love stories -Antony & Cleopatra, Augustus & Livia... But 'ordinary' Romans had love stories too, often unknown. This fresco shows the baker Terentius Neo & his wife; from #Pompeii. Both hold implements of literacy appearing as well educated members of society.

Parentalia, the #Roman #festival in honour of family ancestors, lasted 9 days from 13 February. Families visited the tombs with offerings of flower garlands, wheat, salt, wine-soaked bread and violets; all temples were closed, marriages were forbidden, & public officials suspended business.

🏛️#RoamingRomanHarry is at #Xanten Archaeological Park. Despite facing challenges such as the Germanic Bataver revolt in 69-70AD, the #Roman settlement -established c 13AD- thrived & became Colonia Ulpia Traiana, 88-89AD. It was destroyed in the 3rd C & was ultimately abandoned by the 4th.

#NationalPizzaDay🍕Pizza-like dishes were made throughout the ancient world, consisting of a topped flatbread. In Ancient Rome it was called adorea or libum adoreum & was topped with moretum (cheese spread) & fruits. In Pompeii, a fresco was found in 2023, showing an early pizza type food.

For our #hillfort clip this week, we travel to the Isle of Bute, #Scotland & Barone Hill, overlooking Rothesay. With stunning views , it has two lines of enclosure, representing separate phases of construction. Some facing stones that once dressed the walls can still be seen.

✨💰 Behold a counterfeit coin mould, 🔍 discovered at #Trimontium in 1940 and on display at the museum. It features a denarius of Caracalla (AD188-217) on one side, & the reverse of an antoninianus of Aurelian (AD270-275) on the other. A combination of coin types of different dates.

✨ Celebrating #WomenInScience: #Hypatia of #Alexandria (AD355-415) 📚 was a Neoplatonic philosopher, mathematician, astronomer & revered teacher. She edited Book III of Ptolemy's Almagest, which supported the geocentric model of the universe.

Today is the anniversary of 2 deaths in the #Roman #Empire separated by almost 200 years. #Britannicus, son of Claudius, died 11 Feb AD55, 1 day before his 14th bday. He's said to have been poisoned by his stepbrother Nero. ⠀ Emperor, #Gordian III died in AD244, aged 19. After 6 years in power.

#MythologyMonday In the winter in the northern hemisphere, a small constellation, called Columba (dove), is visible. Its name is rooted in #ancient #mythology. On their sea voyage, Jason & the Argonauts would have been lost & killed by two clashing rocks if not for a dove.
