It's something the more acceptability focused queer spaces often miss, which leads to weird internalized homophobic, "I'm gay but not one of -those- gays", 'gays against groomers' and 'gays for trump' sorts.

Furry is one of the safest spaces for queer folks specifically because it is a safe place for sex and kink positivity. When your community is built on being a haven for the weird kinksters and sex...sters(?) you can't exactly force people into the closet for being too weird, or strange, or... queer.
