That’s right! Join us! We are fighting back through legal suits, mass actions, and grassroots organizing. 👊👊👊

In case you missed our Texas AAUP-AFT legislative update this week, you can watch it here! ⁦‪@TexasAFT‬⁩ #HigherEd Organizer Amanda Garcia + our President Brian Evans talked about bills of concern + legislative priorities starting at the 8:12 mark. ⬇️ www.youtube.com/live/esf_5sM...

There's a lot happening these days, so if you missed the @modernlanguage.bsky.social webinar on Legislative Encroachment on Higher Ed, you can watch the recording here to better understand how to respond to attacks on DEI, higher education, & academic freedom. webinars.mla.org/webinar/legi...

“We are calling for a renewed push around the boycott because of Columbia’s flagrant violation of academic freedom and faculty governance. NYU seems to have cancelled a talk about humanitarian crises because it could be perceived as critical of the US government. Universities are in a tough position, but it's alarming to see them collude in suppressing academic freedom. We must do better. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/n...

On behalf of our clients AAUP and AFT, Protect Democracy & Altshuler Berzon filed a preliminary injunction to stop additional cuts following the Trump admin’s unlawful termination of $400 million in funding for vital scientific & public health research at Columbia University. protdem.org/3G6Zkq9

A basic red line for defending academic freedom would be not turning over faculty data because they signed an open letter.

CUCFA expresses its outrage over @uofcalifornia.bsky.social's disclosure the personal info of 850 faculty members showing brazen disregard of academic freedom, shared governance and complicity in broader efforts to stifle dissent and pit faculty against one another. cucfa.org/2025/04/cucf...

This is a consistent them across Florida higher ed. They remove real scholars in order to create cushy gigs for unqualified party members, sometimes with no-show jobs. They are turning public institutions into a lucrative spoils system.

If you, like me, are looking for firm details on what’s happened so far at NEH, here’s a list of programs that are marked as discontinued or cancelled on the website. This is a snapshot - I’m sure this the impacts will grow as more cuts unfold throughout the day. #NEH #DigitalHumanities

Dan Braaten, officer in the Texas A&M University AAUP Chapter: “SB 37 will greatly damage… students’ freedom to learn. Education without academic freedom…reduces education to mere propaganda which may be what politicians have had in mind all along.” ⬇️ aaup-texas.org/blog/f/texas...

SCOOP: You've heard about the NIH terminating grants. I've learned of another, less visible way it's disrupting science: It’s removing some applications from peer review. Not rejecting them, but putting them on hold without saying why or if they'll ever be reviewed. www.chronicle.com/article/the-...

The U.S. Naval Academy has confirmed that officials there removed items commemorating female Jewish graduates from a historic display ahead of a visit to the school by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday.

The officials on the forum said affected students were almost all Middle Eastern—Turkish, Kuwaiti, Saudi, Iranian—or from majority-Muslim countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh. www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

NEW: The Trump admin is wreaking havoc on the student visa system as it pursues sweeping campus deportations. I spoke with college officials struggling to help terrified students navigate a "strange world" they no longer recognize. www.insidehighered.com/news/global/...

Amid nationwide deportation crackdown, eight Arizona State University students may be forced to leave the U.S.

Please contact your member of congress to ask them to save the NEH. p2a.co/DdtlGIT

🔔SB 757/HB 281 discontinues academic programs if the medium salaries of graduates exceeds student loan debt. This bill would limit students’ options + penalize programs that train students for vital but lower paying careers. See our concerns below! 👇 aaup-texas.org/blog/f/hb281...

As we all know, NEH funding was already almost inexpressibly meager. It bears repeating that they’ve targeted NEH and IMLS exactly because they’ve been *incredibly* efficient at spurring new thought, writing, and community-building.

Friends, we are disappointed to report that our NEH grant was terminated overnight. The same was true for thousands of other projects. Please join us in protesting these outrageous actions by the Trump administration. aaslh.org/take-action-...

Tufts University petitions a federal judge to release student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was grabbed off the street by immigration officials. The move is some of the strongest public pushback by a school against the Trump administration's arrests of foreign students.

“Saving ourselves is an important first thing, but making it our business to save America is everything.” President of Trinity Washington University Patricia McGuire discusses the vital role higher ed must play in defending democracy. www.aaup.org/article/high...

Among the thousands of groups affected by the sudden cessation of funds are state arts councils, museums, historic sites, archives, libraries, educators and media outlets in all 50 states.

AAUP has just published a memo laying out the many legal reasons why universities should not hand over the names & nationalities of their students or faculty, as the Trump admin has asked. Please share freely with your friendly university admin! @aaup.bsky.social www.aaup.org/news/institu...

Congress has the power to restore funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Join me in calling your reps!

"Late last night, all humanities councils received emails and letters ... notifying them that all [NEH] awarded grants—including their 5-year General Operating Grants and other program-specific awards—were canceled in their entirety, effective April 1." www.statehumanities.org/action-alert... 🗃️

🚨UPDATE: Rümeysa Öztürk has now suffered three separate asthma attacks while in DHS custody. She has not received her required asthma medications—a violation of her fundamental right to medical care. This is cruelty, it is neglect, and it is a damning moral and legal failure.

The police at Florida Atlantic University are the first in the nation to partner with ICE. That means they can interrogate and detain students they suspect of being undocumented. Here’s our @nbcmiami.com report. www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/f...

Attacks on higher education—like the $510M funding freeze at Brown—threaten academic freedom, diversity, and democracy itself. Institutions must stand firm, resist capitulation, and uphold their values. Silence isn’t a strategy. #HigherEdUnderAttack #AcademicFreedom www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-t...

The Office for Civil Rights has requested the names & nat'lities of students & faculty..involved in alleged Title VI violations. Today, the AAUP wrote to college & universities to clarify that they are under NO LEGAL COMPULSION to comply. Doing so enables deportations. www.aaup.org/news/institu...

Here is Texas the accreditation war had already begun. #TxLege

Background on why the #TxLege is targeting SACS accreditation.

The NIH has made headlines for terminating grants and delaying peer review. But there’s another, less visible way the agency is disrupting science: It’s quietly removing some grant applications from review for the indefinite future. chroni.cl/4leEu8z

“The most urgent need today, as the Columbia case shows, is to create a new social contract on boards of trustees, who have become too craven to be watchdogs & too self-interested to be trusted.” Important piece by Arjun Appadurai. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

1) Trump now turns attention to Harvard-- this is a big bet of his administration: can he tame academic freedom or will universities actually defend what they stand for? Can he destroy America's capacity to develop knowledge freely?
