Some non-Americans are expressing a sense of helplessness watching the US. My personal recommendation to those feeling that way is to work to steel up the science infrastructure, funding, and culture in your own country. We need everyone to harbor knowledge and incubate progress while the US can't!

Good to see good news still exist.

For eight decades, alliances have formed the bedrock of American foreign, trade and cultural policy. But not any more. Europeans, but also America's Asian allies, need to accept this new world, and learn how to live in it. www.theatlantic.com/internationa...

Why do the words Ribbentrop and Molotov keep buzzing in my head the whole day?

Universities in the UK and US, facing declining government support, will not renew expensive deals with Elsevier and others. Scholars need to support low cost journals! See e.g. freejournals.org, which is looking for new board members.

"Retaining a fellow [Musk] whose actions contradict the ethical principles that the Royal Society purports to hold is tantamount to tacit approval and runs the risk of eroding public confidence in the Society’s commitment to its own standards." substack.com/home/post/p-...

Seems we are witnessing the formation of a US-RU alliance, presumably to weaken Chinese influence, brought about by a total betrayal of Ukraine and Europe. And Greenland being the European weak point that may trigger a conflict with such alliance. Just extrapolating trajectories…😢

The moment Trump ally Carla Sands tried to tell Victoria Derbyshire that there are more political dissidents in prison in the U.K. than in all of Russia. We really are through the looking glass now.

Tally just ticked past 1900 signatures. Please keep spreading the word about the letter & asking people to sign. It's important to make the Royal Society aware (at their meeting on 03 March) just how much the scientific community wants them to speak up for their values. forms.gle/SfsDemyS8QhP...

Science is under a wide-ranging attack in the U.S. From arbitrary and catastrophic funding cuts to censorship based on keywords, scholarship is no longer free from government interference. How can scientists respond? 1/n

Couldn’t agree more. I carefully pre-screen everything I am about to watch for gratuitous violence. Why would I want to contaminate my long-term memory with that? Pleased to say I haven’t seen any of the mentioned shows even though I am very aware of them.

🚨Interested in accents, psychology, and voice technology? Well, I have just the preprint for you! I'm delighted to share my latest research: "Accentuate the Self: Prioritization of Self-Associated External Voices is Enhanced by Accent Matching." 🧵A thread (1/12)

With 17 days to go until the US takeover by the new Trump (or Musk?) administration, I thought it might be worthwhile to share a number of recent papers published by our team that counter arguments that have been leveled against misinformation research. 1/n

Just verifying something with UK people: Anybody else been told at pharmacies that no paid flu jabs are available anymore?

So good to see rigorous mining of the research lit!

The number of UK universities now actively making redundancies has risen to 85. That number will be will over 100 by spring. I'm afraid this is happening faster, and will be worse, than even I thought. Solidarity and thoughts with and to all affected. qmucu.org/qmul-transfo...

Another line of research that I find falls into this category is the search for evidence that multilingualism enhances domain-general executive control. Many null results and strong evidence that there is no far transfer. And yet… 1/

It's right to feel sad and angry. This is legit the worst case scenario. But I will try to steer clear of projecting second- and third-order effects. They are notoriously unpredictable, especially on the hoof, and will only make the despair debilitating. Let's not fast forward to the end of time.

This is how it happened: the deep reasons behind the support for Trump. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Why should nobody trust the claims made in the Rigor Enhancing Retraction paper? Or by extension trust any public claims by the authors since the journal-forced retraction? I'll do a short thread that won't use the word "preregistration" once. Because preregistration is 100% irrelevant. 🧵👇1/

New paper out, led by Alex Easton, where we argue that context only really makes sense at the point of retrieval, so it can't be encoded: Context in memory is reconstructed, not encoded #psychscisky #neuroskyence #cognition

📊When teaching or giving a talk, do you like presenting plots step by step, revealing e.g. one group at a time? This is often useful for walking through complex results. I made a R package that makes it extremely easy to do this! ggreveal: Reveal a ggplot incrementally #rstats #dataviz #ggplot2
