How Elon Musk planned for DOGE: Our investigation found that he raised the idea in 2023, becoming fixated on gaining insider access to federal systems. By Dec., he chose USDS as a landing place, and future DOGE members began applying for jobs there. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/u...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Most drastic cut in spending by US consumers in three years last month despite decline in inflation.

after chewing on this, I'm curious what legal implications there might be in terms of doge accessing computer systems before the EO was even created

Listen to NPR describe the federal firings again as "layoffs". They're not. They are "terminations for cause" for people with high performance reviews and no performance reviews. They're illegal.

This Day in Labor History: February 16, 1931. The Harlan County Coal Operators’ Association reduced wages for miners in that part of eastern Kentucky by 10 percent. In response, the United Mine Workers of America attempted to organize the miners. This started the Harlan County Coal War for 8 years!

I'm a little insulted that the State of Iowa offered AFSCME Council 61 a 2% pay increase while they offered the University of Iowa student workers and health workers 3%. I mean, it's all unreasonably low when inflation hit 9% a couple years ago and our buying power is down 10% in the last decade.

Wall expressed disappointment but not surprise to hear the offer of 3%, and said it is barely over the rate of inflation. “It’s really disappointing,” Wall said. “I suppose it’s contrary to the entire premise of collective bargaining when … there isn’t even a negotiation, much less a bargain.”

AFSCME Local 96 stands in solidarity with the grad student workers union at the University of Iowa. A 3% raise isn't enough when the average CPI the last three years has been 5.7%, and certainly isn't enough when those workers are historically underpaid.

Trump brazenly broke the law by firing NLRB Member Gwynne Wilcox. He did it to make the NLRB unable to function, so employers can ignore workers' rights to form unions (& probably also b/c Gwynne is a Black woman). (Gift link) 1/x wapo.st/3CGlzlC

Labor agreements are between workers and employers collectively - not any one President. If the President disagrees with the terms of the contract, he is welcome to raise his concerns during the next set of negotiations.

For all federal employees: Before you are locked out of your systems, ensure you have copies of unclassified performance appraisals, awards & other relevant personnel docs. If you have access to your office, grab your more important personal items sooner rather than later.

It’s getting real y’all. 97% of New York Magazine Union members just signed a pledge to walk out of work if we don’t get a fair contract from Vox Media. If you love @nymag.com and the work we do, sign our solidarity pledge to support us in the event of a walkout: nymagunion.org/reader-pledge

@nbcnews.com doubled down on their illegal layoffs, refusing to bargain over the decision to unjustly terminate our members. But our members showed up strong to say: no contract, no layoffs. Tell management they deserve a fair contract NOW: bit.ly/3EditpD

We are in scary times with immigration sweeps, executive orders & farmworkers laboring in thick wildfire smoke. We're scrambling to do everything at once & our resources are stretched thin. How workers died last week. Carbon monoxide, falls, logging, suffocation, coal mine, construction equipment, vehicle incidents, stabbing and shootings. On average, over 100 workers are killed every week in the US due to traumatic injuries suffered at work jordanbarab.com/confinedspac...

Happy first day of union contract negotiations!

New: Meta has deleted trans and nonbinary Messenger themes, as well as the blog posts announcing them. Happens the same week that it has changed its rules to allow users to say LGBTQ+ people are "mentally ill" www.404media.co/meta-deletes...

Remember in 2017 when Trump held a press conference with a bunch of manila folders but nobody was allowed to look inside any of them?

I was one of the top ten most prolific Birdwatch participants on Twitter before Musk took over. Facebook embracing Community Notes seems pretty bad for content moderation. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/07/b...

I didn't come here to make friends. I came here to get minimum wage protections

This is amazing! I tested it out and it works perfectly. Finally the opt-out people have been wanting. (I did a story last month about how Google didn't offer an opt-out for AI Overview and it was making people grouchy www.npr.org/2024/11/12/n...)

Just finished The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty. Holy buckets, what a good book. Highly recommended.

Employer: We're going to need you to spend a third of your paid time off on days we choose unless you can justify working them. Me: I would like to pick my own days off, thank you.
