‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

On climate protest, a superb point from @richarddenniss.bsky.social. If protest wasn't effective, govts wouldn't try to ban it. And as much as politicians like to talk about parliamentary logjams, as soon as fossil capital is threatened, they mobilise with extraordinary rapidity and efficacy.

I just love this figure from @jksteinberger.bsky.social in their paper on "Discourses of Climate Delay". You can find all the arguments of your colleagues and influencers taking the world in the wrong direction. Perhaps we need another paper rebutting each? www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Sweden is one of a handful of countries that has been reporting net negative GHG emissions for a number of years. lambwf.github.io/Tidy-GHG-Inv... If you are wondering "how is that possible?" its because the definition of land use change removals in inventories is very inclusive...

Here is the issue that has caused so many headaches among climate mitigation researchers - inventory estimates of net land use change emissions differ substantially from global bookkeeping models. lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep...

I revamped my page with ghg emissions plots and data from the UNEP Emissions Gap Report. 👇 lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep... I'll be adding to this a bit in the coming months.

We just published a map of climate policy research. It has lots of useful resources, including a new typology of instrument types and a literature hub where you can search for studies by sector and instrument: climateliterature.org#/project/pol... www.nature.com/articles/s44...

I collected some thoughts and resources about the "Discourses of Climate Delay" article. Read here: lambwf.github.io/Discourses-o... @jksteinberger.bsky.social @giuliomattioli.bsky.social @timmonsroberts.bsky.social @efesce.bsky.social @stucap.bsky.social

China's latest national GHG inventory submission (common reporting table) to the UNFCCC ... 🤔

Countries can classify emissions from wildfires (and subsequent removals from regrowth) as a memo item in their national greenhouse gas inventories, excluding them from the total. So far Australia and Canada have done this - including Australia's massive 2020 wildfire.

1. This is what it’s really about. Farage, Truss and co have no convictions of their own. They are mere channels for the demands of capital. Here they are, supporting a climate science-denying lobby group funded by oil and oligarchs. www.theguardian.com/environment/... 🧵

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']: Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.

One of the frustrations of the German academic funding scene (and presumably elsewhere) is the common requirement for co-financing. a.k.a. "You can apply for this grant, as long as you pay x% of the costs." Fine if you have a core funded position (just count your own time). Not fine if you don't.

New dataset: Tidy GHG Inventories (zenodo.org/records/1451...) I extracted emissions data from the national inventories and put it into a tidy, consistent format. The kind of format that I would actually use.

Just published a paper in Nature Scientific Reports where we've trained a model to automatically detect logical fallacies in climate misinformation - part of our project using AI to debunk climate myths www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The International Court of Justice is working on an advisory opinion on the legal obligations of countries in preventing climate change. I helped a team of IPCC authors to prepare evidence for the court, which was delivered yesterday. www.icj-cij.org/sites/defaul... @pik-potsdam.bsky.social

Your bicycle is not surveilling you.

Indonesia emissions - hopefully phasing out coal doesn't mean phasing in bioenergy. Do we know more about what exactly the "75 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy" target means? lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep...

A postcard from the future in multiple ways - I think this will be one of the first countries where we get to see if the frontier of decarbonisation can push into other sectors lambwf.github.io/UNEP-Gap-Rep...

I think an important precondition for this is that countries actually start to distinguish emissions reductions from removals in their pledges, and then do the needed disaggregation. We have some practical suggestions: iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1...

When countries update their NDCs in the next year, it would be cool if they told us how much carbon dioxide removal they have in mind... iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... #COP29
