Heat pump sales fall because in 🇬🇧 (relatively clean) electricity is charged at 4 times the price of dirty gas per kWh….which is insane given renewables produce electricity at markedly lower cost than gas Where electricity is priced more comparable to gas, heat pump installation rises (eg Sweden)

I’m sure “DOGE” will be all over this.. truthout.org/articles/tes...

The ad, of course, is almost a decade old, and would be funny if it weren’t exactly what people get to hear now in a lot of European countries (plus some more outspoken racism). The same scam can be re-sold over and over again.

Which makes Brexit itself a mistake, and not just a project for which it was a mistake not to have a plan. Still. Baby steps and all that.

this is what long-time Elon watchers call "The Realization": when Elon stumbles into your area of expertise, and you realize everyone just gives the guy the benefit of the doubt because he talks about complicated things people don't pay attention to

A little known story that would make a fantastic film script.

Spain is to introduce a 100% tax on homes purchased by people who are not EU residents. The move is to tackle the housing shortage in Spain, where 27,000 properties were sold in 2023 to non-residents, not to live in, but to make money from. An interesting move and one to consider in the UK too.

At some point people will look back at the rates available in the 2010s and be utterly bemused that we didn’t take the chance to hugely upgrade our national infrastructure. on.ft.com/4fNdIQN

Me, most of the year: “Oh yes… architectural conservation…. Victorian streets… from Glasgow to Tooting…. Astonishing… The legacy of the 19th century British builder…” Me in winter: “This country is insane knock down all pre-1995 housing and replace it with thermally sealed concrete blocks.”

X/Musk are directly shaping election campaigns in multiple countries. The platform needs to be regulated accordingly.

Musk's own AI surpasses his intelligence on his platform.

Something lovely for the weekend! A very good boy! 🐾🐕😍 An amazing c. 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian dog carved from ivory. This leaping hunting dog opens and closes its mouth, as if barking, by using a lever below its chest. 📷 by me #Archaeology

2024 was the hottest year on record, capping the ten hottest years on record. 2024 shows that the heating of the earth is accelerating. 2024 approaches the midpoint of this decade. The last four decades were the hottest decades on record.

Nice piece articulating the crazy market power of gas plants demanding prices *40 times* the official estimated running cost. Ofgem must take action to limit excess profits; & in the long run, gas shld be moved outside the wholesale market into a back-up reserve. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

I'm reading Ursula Le Guin's Steering the Craft and it's full of gems, even for nonfiction #AcademicSky writing. "A skill is something you know how to do. Skill in writing frees you to write what you want to write. It may also show you what you want to write. Craft enables art."

Climate inaction is way more expensive than climate action, and it’s not even close.

How could anyone have thought this rigged system could be a good way to manage energy costs in cold weather? We need to nationalise the power stations. The energy supply is a fundamental utility and should be run for the best service not for private profit. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Staggeringly misleading & irresponsible article by Express online. Neither I nor my site've ever said that. It's a perversion of our "earn under £35k & it's worth checking a benefits calc to see if you're missing out on owt" into dangerous, trite clickbait.

It'll be interesting to hear the views from @themerl.bsky.social on what their latest recruit makes of the latest developments at the @mediamuseum.bsky.social

Appropriate mix of headlines. Climate change accelerates, while the business world, under pressure from US conservatives, abandons any attempt to stop it

I love this podcast. Well worth following. The interview with @jessphillipsmp.bsky.social was brilliant. I stand with Jess Phillips against misinformation, misogyny and hate.

For the UK there is a real opportunity here to attract global talent and investment simply by displaying commitment to the rule of law, basic liberal principles and sound economics. Projecting competence may seem a low bar but it’s one others will struggle to meet.

Between one thing and another, perhaps people might see the point of Orwell's obsession with the importance of Truth now. Not a tedious banality from an old English pedant, but absolutely critical to everything if we actually wish to live in liberal democratic societies.

Now this is *actual* foreign interference - not good.
