Damn, based on all the people whining in comments and quotes over basic years old industry knowledge the gamer audience here is as pathetic and illiterate as they are on Twitter
Did you workshop how stupid a take you could come up with? The game industry's fine. GTA 6's delay means nothing except to GTA fans and certain investors, and the impact there is minor.
Interesting article and the video linked in the article was quite good as well. That point being made in that video about how the video game market is chafing against the population of the planet was fascinating.
Point is, the quest for endless growth will kill all life on earth eventually💀
Now it's not just video games RIP, but even movies RIP 1880s-2025, cartoons RIP 1900s-2025, anime RIP 1907-2025, comics RIP 1900s-2025, Earth Planet RIP 999Billion BC-2025
I mean of course 8ts click bait cause it acts as if the main so called "AAA" gaming industry is the only part that matters when tons of i di games do way more h3avy lifting than most people know.
i love indie games but the article is correct that a shift towards indies means a decline in the industry - less cash flowing through it, fewer people getting paid - even if you think (i do!) that that's good for the medium
media journalism headlines have been meaningless trash for years now, the only thing that stands out is that the article's actual content has substance. if i thought an article being written under capitalism trashed any message criticizing business practices then i wouldn't be able to read anything
I am fine with not reading anything with a cynical capitalist headline (and framing, for that matter; it wasn:t just the headline), that seems a laudable practice, and I have plently else to read, much less other things to do
I don’t know how you write about this topic and not use the words recession at least once. As if people not having jobs isn’t impacting their investments into luxuries like games and pushing them to free ad fueled entertainment.
in April, just on Steam, nearly 90 games were released that I have some interest in playing, that is 3 per day!
I will only be able to play 3 or 4 of those, unfortunately.
But please tell me, how do you square this with a "dead industry"?
It is a clickbait title. The article is more about how the industry as it has existed in the past is dead and that things will look different in the future.
There's literally been some strong releases as of late.. Clair Obscur Expidition 33? Oblivion Remastered? even if that's just a remaster, it was a hit..
Gaming doesn't revolve around GTA, this is stupid.
This is the most manipulative and sensationalist article I ever read from Eurogamer. Literally the whole article is a bait and a mislead. Only the last two paragraphs are a honest take. Like 80/20.
Good piece, but the problem is more faceted than just TikTok. Fortnite, Roblox, Minecraft…this is where the mass-market eyeballs are. Playing games from years ago and not buying new ones.
I read the article and while
Yes the gaming industry is going through a shift towards other Asian developers and emphasis towards smaller games from steam. I do think that people are going to play them if they were told to by algorithms on social media. That’s likely the way things are going to go.
Sensationalist headline aside, I actually agree with Eurogamer. Yes, the indie and homebrew communities are doing fantastic, but as far as "revenue streams" are concerned, they're a drop in the bucket. The "AAA" space is just barely clinging to life support, the industry as a whole is a nightmare.
Remember when Eurogamer was a publication with reasonable takes and well written articles? Headlines like this prove that game journalism seems to be as dead as the industry they claim has died. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
loving the amount of people going "🤓 pshh, yeah, maybe triple-a game dev is dying but indies are only getting better", because it means they clearly didnt read the article
I don't understand why its being framed as a bad thing! What's the sonic meme? Is that not what this move would be ushering in? Video games made by people who understand that prioritizing 8k graphics no one can reasonably use is not worth it?
Yeah, and people acting like it's our fault for refusing to click on such obvious clickbait are just hilarious. We're not arguing about the article we didn't read. We're commenting exclusively on the stupid headline. If that's not what they wanted, they should choose a better headline.
sure! i don't blame you either. that's not what i'm talking about though, i'm talking about people who are trying to argue about the content of the article without reading it.
sorry about the previous response, i was in a pretty grumpy mood for unrelated reasons when i sent it

Nobody can combine so many trendy things into one text with sensationalist and doomsday rhetoric on accident.
You're basically leaning on one jaded, dying capitalist trope to tout the death of another jaded, dying capitalist trope. Do better.
Without clickbait they're finished i ntheir need for clicks.
I understand the intent to show her as a victim of the same collapse, but respect what she's doing now, eh?
This isn't 'video game crash of 1983' levels of decline.
I will only be able to play 3 or 4 of those, unfortunately.

Gaming doesn't revolve around GTA, this is stupid.
Eurogamer…
And also why so many name and term drops?
This article felt like a tag list.
"Be a real gamer and don't pre-order GTA 6"
😆 GL with that.
People are in denial over this because they think something as large and monolithic as the games industry can't fail.
But dead doesn't mean gone for good and we'll see more of a paradigm shift than anything.
Yes the gaming industry is going through a shift towards other Asian developers and emphasis towards smaller games from steam. I do think that people are going to play them if they were told to by algorithms on social media. That’s likely the way things are going to go.
and that goes for both the west and asian territories
thats literally the whole thesis of the article
sorry about the previous response, i was in a pretty grumpy mood for unrelated reasons when i sent it
if you're trying to argue about the ideas posited by the article and havent read it though, like, what are we doing here at that point
I would have shot myself.
Just go and read it.
