Why when politicians talk of tough choices and spending cuts don’t they link it to the #BrexitBlackHole and force Farage to own the disaster he created.
Brexit has a year on year impact. So under investment, both public and private causes a downward spiral in subsequent years. The hole digs itself. Tinkering with the budget is like putting new tyres on a car with a knackered engine. We all know it’s knackered, but no one wants to lift the bonnet.
🚨 When the UK voted Leave I felt a sickness 🤢 in my stomach warning me that Trump would win in the US, too. Scaring people with bad hombres/immigrants hurt both of our countries in lasting ways.
Yeah but your stablemate Iain Dale sez Brexit is going brilliantly cos the OBR always gets everything wrong and you’re patronising to suggest otherwise And he must know cos he used to want to be an MP. https://youtu.be/2OFFhzMIMPc?si=1cRIYVWJ7WwnU-Gg
Exactly as Putin wanted. And today the "Reform" fools who perpetrated it are becoming more popular. Just listen to the audience comments during BBC's Question Time. Sad.
Farage has teamed up with US based groups (similar to the Heritage foundation), and they've been telling potential donors they're creating a Reform version of Project 2025.
So Farage would be making policy & law at the behest of his US paymasters.
The original 4% hit to GDP contained 2.5% predicated as a result of assumed reduced net migration. In reality immigration has increased significantly since 2016 so in the outcome matching the prediction, it means that the damage to the underlying economy has been about double what was predicted.
that's so wonderful and who makes up for this loss? oh yes, Disabled and Pensioners, I'm in both of those catagories and I never bloody voted for the biggest con on the British people
The reality is the vast majority of people who voted to leave would not benefit from the missing 4% GDP. Decades of inequality between London and everywhere else has built an anti establishment culture, tapped into by the right. I suggest we stop moaning about Brexit and fix inequality.
We can’t fix inequality without money. And £40bn a year is a lot. Meanwhile, Starmer refuses to contemplate single market membership or even a customs union, and Reeves wants to crackdown on PIP.
We can fix inequality as we’re a $3tn economy. It’s a political choice. Gov has called this out only last week. It seems to me those moaning the loudest about rejoining are the ones with already the most privilege.
Inequality is indeed largely a political choice, but I don’t accept it’s a binary one: inequality or rejoin. I want both fixed & no reason not to demand that.
On your last point: those with the most privilege are the least adversely affected by Brexit. It’s not they who campaign to rejoin.
It’s arguably is binary because the Brexit division still largely remains because inequality remains. I suggest the government knows this, hence its redlines. I am using privilege in the comparatively broadest sense.
The ‘have nots’ were conned by ‘haves’ into believing EU was the cause of their ‘not having’ (the haves now moving onto conning them they must give up yet more universal rights in order to ‘have’…).
It is possible to demonstrate & communicate that was a lie & reversal is beneficial, if one chooses.
The missing £40bn is part of the puzzle, yes. Would most definitely help & it’s stupid to continue to dogmatically shoot ourselves in the foot, simply because running scared to take on the loud regressive voices of Farage, Tories & their shill press & well funded ‘think-tanks’.
The great thing about democracy is that the leading proponent of Brexit will be punished by the electorate and can't possibly be the bookies' favourite as next PM.
Ahh.. but without Brexit Starmer wouldn’t be in that enviable position of crawling round Trump at the White House for chicken trade deals and now having to decide to support 🇺🇸 in another Middle East war - Brexit benefits 👎
Why don't they write an article on all those EU laws that UK no longer needs to follow? Or one that interviews fishermen happy with their new arrangements?
In regards to his support for Israel, he once said, "Until I see an Arab country, a Muslim country, with a democracy, I won't understand how anyone can have a problem with how they're treated."
That's a green light to commit genocide against innocent Palestinians.
No, James. This is a different 4% than the one predicted by Project Common Sen.., I mean Project Fear. These 4%s are entirely unrelated and this 4% loss was because of Woke™.
I'd argue that Brexit was a complete success. It did what was intended - gave Boris Johnson the keys to Downing Street and allowed him to become rich and powerful. The fact that our economy suffered and people died is beside the point to someone like him
Which is why Johnson switched sides, from previously being pro-Remain to pro-Leave - he saw it as a stepping stone to beinf elected as Prime Minister. Remember, like Trump, everything Johnson does is all about him, he only does something if it means he gets something out of it.
He didn’t expect to win the Brexit vote. He wanted a vote close enough to seize power. He knew it was a loser, which makes him an even worse individual.
Yes, completely agree. I think he was horrified when it passed and he might actually have to do some work. Probably why he didn't grab the reins of power straight away. He was hoping that someone else would do the work for him.
I wish I could re-listen to George Osborne’s Today interview that happened just before the vote. It was factual, mesmerising, desperate.
He sounded like a man on a railway track waving for a runaway train to stop. Haven’t heard an interview like it before or since.
Amazing really that… with nothing to show for it except harm done… Brexit remains politically untouchable, ringfenced from serious scrutiny.
Such a concerted and relentless effort by politicians and media - supposed patriots - to protect their con and screw the country.
After the massive shock on the morning of 24/6/2016 and everything that happened up to last years GE, there seemed to be a kind of hope that at least we would have honest commentary from a new Labour gov. Shot to bits now.
I’m absolutely not a fan of Brexit, but the EU tax avoidance rules were not a driver. For the most part, the UK already had in place the anti-avoidance rules which the EU subsequently introduced.
Country by country reporting (BEPS base erosion and profit shifting) is designed to stop entities posting £10bln profits as an example with 1 employee in a low taxation jurisdiction. Not publishing in the UK means you/I do not have insight into the company we spend with are paying, or not.. taxes
The EU requirements (explained here by BDO Global) apply to groups in CbCR with presence in one or more EU countries, subject to certain criteria, for periods commencing from June 2024 onwards. The Australian rules (explained here by BDO Australia) commence on the same timeframe.
The EU and Australia have introduced requirements for groups to publish at least partial details of their CbCR, allowing scrutiny of the relevant information by the public and raising the prospect of needing to consider the public relations implications of the content.
Thanks for your replies! Agree that the UK has avoided the public CbCR requirement, but I don’t think this was a driving factor for Brexit, simply a consequence of it.
It’s only fear of the press that is stopping our cowardly politicians. Both major parties are totally spineless. They know it’s bad for the country, all of them. What they won’t do is what’s best for the country. Oh no, they have to appease the press. They’re a joke.
Where are the cheerleaders of Brexit now? Why dont they espouse the benefits of Brexit for us in the world. Where is Boris & why are they silent about all the good England was supposed to gain.
BoJo is a sophisticated guy who was never a Brit. version of Trump as portrayed in a lot of media. However, he is without doubt a political charlatan who took positions he did not believe in to advance his career. Brexit may be the single greatest act of national self-harm since WW2.
The total amount of economic damage caused to the UK as a result of the Brexit fiasco is far more than £40 billion, and is probably incalculable. See attached an extract from a 2024 report by the London Mayor’s office.
Please could someone wake up dear Rachel from her slumbers? Either that or tell her to take back the pre2016 Economics textbook to the library ASAP. We can't keep paying this fine for her.
Oh, wait, 49% of voters knew. Economists knew, politicians knew, even Boris Johnson knew (but like his American idol, went with his ego rather than the facts) 🙄
Johnson took 3 days to make up his mind whether to campaign for Brexit. He knew it was going to be a financial disaster because 99% of economists said it would.
His need to become PM outweighed common sense, judgement or what was best for UK
Yes 3 days. When the Prime Minister announced a referendum would be held, Boris Johnson was asked which side would he be campaigning for. He took 3 days to answer

And we don’t have those pesky Eastern European immigrants stealing our jobs anymore.
And we don’t pay the EU any money now & are channelling all £350m a week into the NHS which has flourished since.
I can see the green and pleasant uplands from my window !
Farage has teamed up with US based groups (similar to the Heritage foundation), and they've been telling potential donors they're creating a Reform version of Project 2025.

This would not happen in France, or even South Korea.
Why do we allow these ordinary idiots to fuck up our lives, with OUR money?
No idea why it turned into a row. 🤷♂️
What are you talking about?
Project ‘we fucking told you so’, is my preferred phraseology.
Then you’re saying that the Govt is choosing not to fix inequality, which if so, is disgraceful.
On your last point: those with the most privilege are the least adversely affected by Brexit. It’s not they who campaign to rejoin.
It is possible to demonstrate & communicate that was a lie & reversal is beneficial, if one chooses.
Whose rag pays Johnson a very generous fee for writing a column.
Or Tufton Street.
Or the cheerleaders .
Or the CONservative Party .
Such a shame treason went out of fashion 😩
It shames the UK as well as weakens us. It’s insanity with no upside.
Left with a £6m mansion.
What are the odds, eh?
But I am still unhappy about governance of EU.
Yes Brexit was economically a disaster.
That's a green light to commit genocide against innocent Palestinians.

How appalling is that!
A holy cow that has to be revered regardless.
The UK does not itself have any public CbCR requirement, with documents filed only for the interest of HMRC and relevant overseas tax authorities.
.....and fish. Don't forget Brexiteers were also campaigning about fish.
How did that work out? 🙄
You decide.

What an absolute cockup.
#sarcasm
But it's what they will say down the pub, today
Blood Rachel Reeves again! is there no end to her evil.....?
