I actually had a discussion with a gastroenterologist who told me CrossFit has been incredible for their practice because of the increase in hemorrhoid sufferers!
Yeah, I had two really good instructors (one was a former gymnast and one was a female former rugby prop who loved powerlifting) who instructed us correctly — I always booked their classes — but also some who were like, “Just do squats however and then jump on a box any way you like. It’s fine.”
I've been saved by a friendly fellow lifter when I stupidly let my ego come to the gym with me and squatted too heavy. I hurt myself as it was and I hate to think what would've happened without kindness of a stranger. Get a spot or go high reps low weight or something, kids. Power rack ain't magic.
He could be doing that Batman and Princess Bride thing where he's trying to build up an immunity to blowing out his back, by blowing out his back in small doses on a periodized cycle. Bane tried his Backbreaker move on Batman a second time and it didn't work because of this method. And Wesley
After I hurt my arms, I bought kitty litter online for 6 months. Having that 20 lb box delivered to my front door made a huge difference in my recovery.
I feel the same way about people being suffocated with pillows in movies and TV. Nobody ever did this! And don’t even get me started on strangling people to death in 30 seconds without a cut to express the passage of time. ABSURD!
I mean, a very common form mistake is to start with the hips too low and try to squat it. What happens is the hips rise before the bar breaks off the ground (throwing the setup out of whack and ending up in a worse good morning mvmt). If you see that happen, they should setup with the hips higher.
most people don't really understand how uncomfortable a good starting position feels, and they end up leaving a lot of muscular slack in the chain at first. It's gotta be
Everytime anyone asks me how to get into lifting I respond “pay a professional to teach you or you’ll wreck yourself”. I’ve been lifting for years & am still learning & fine tuning my form & program.
Right? And as a woman, there’s no way I can approach them and have that go well (because they’re always a man because women who lift heavy are usually extremely serious about it and have spotters and good form)
Sometimes my coach just appears behind me as I grab the bar, and it feels like an omen of how hard the lift is about to be that he felt the need to step in.
Try working labor. Nobody teaches form, nobody cares about form, and everyone talks about their knees and back giving out at 40 as if that's not entirely their own fault.
Ok, but have you ever had to use the phone to talk to another person at a business rather than get the info from their website? Just typing that makes me want to focus on some other thing.
I have had to just walk away as I didn’t want to see the compound fractures that are coming when people do really dumb shit at the gym trying to lift weight they cannot control. I am with you. It literally turns my stomach.
I used to rock climb, and I once was climbing beside a group of teens who were doing all kinds of unsafe things in terms of their rope-handling, and it was so stressful.
I’ve actually noticed a pretty jarring amount of people recently at the gym I go to that also have no clue how to use a lot of the machines. Most of them have instructions on the side!..
actively the greatest form of everyday horror.
they're standing there with triple digits on the bar and bending their back as they go down
somehow has the same energy as staring at a car crash
If I am about to hurt myself (or, over time will hurt myself if the form stays as-is) I very much would like someone to interrupt me. Lay that wisdom and knowledge right on my improperly loaded back, please.
I see a lot of ppl today arching the hell out of their back to get a few pounds more on their bench and I’m not sure if that’s correct but it looks hella wrong
The arch is what puts your shoulders in a more advantageous position--effectively turning the move into a decline angle of attack.
Old gym-bros who complain about benching destroying their shoulders were often doing a flat bench--which is fine if loaded more conservatively rather than for max effort
I haven't worked out in a long time and I'm in relatively okay shape. Any pointers on somebody who wants to start working out again, especially someone who wants to deadlift?
I have quite strict no unsolicited advice in the gym policy, but when I see 16 year olds bent back 1.5 BW lift attempts it goes out the window. I wish someone would have warned me when I was a beginner and did the same. I understand why gym etiquette is how it is but sometimes it sucks.
I have a hard time keeping my back straight during deadlifts, or even realizing that it isn’t straight (maybe from years of hunching in daily life), so I won’t even attempt them without someone else watching
When I was a trainer at a gym I'd offer to spot or give tips and folks would still get kinda testy, like okey dokey just don't smash yourself on my shift I guess

Now, I went to two very high quality gyms, which definitely made a difference.
Always bracing for some final destination style leg folding when I see it.
Sounds like this met the criteria
Maybe next time, don't
But Trump has spotters who love his bad form.
Sometimes I'll let my knees touch each other just so I can say "Oh no, there go my ACLs, I guess it's just chest day forever now"
And, of course, they all seem to have clips on to prevent the plates from sliding off the bar because they seem to be suicidal.
