To me, a huge part of the appeal of Twitter had always been “people who know way more about a given topic than I ever will pointing me to relevant articles / research / newsletters”
And they open in the default browser instead of some shoddy in-app wrapper so you can easily flip back to where you were in the app without losing the linked content. 🎉
Values links, provides reverse-cron feeds with no algo (unless you want it, in which case you can have it!), doesn’t reward engagement farming, doesn’t suppress your follows in favor of ads… Could go on and on!
I JUST posted a Spotify link just to see how it looked and I was so surprised it lets you just preview the song without changing to the app. Just beautiful 🤌🏾
I agree 100%! HUMANS generally know they are sharing spam. It's the BOTS that ruined link sharing on other platforms. More reason that BlueSky rocks. 💙💙
It killed me to constantly see "link in post below" on friends who were creators posts. Having to play stupid games just so they didn't have their work buried was so asinine.
Can someone explain to me how links are differently handled here? Genuine question as I’ve seen this point made a bunch but I have no idea the difference between the two.
BS opts for an open-web linking arch, vs. platforms that restrict links to boost user retention -- this model enables decentralized info flow over a closed creator econ schema
It feels so freeing. Been years where I have had to figure out how to feature a link and get people to figure it out. In bio, in first comment. Tyranny.
@reckless.bsky.social I know there is all kinds competitive reasons not to, but could you discuss relative Verge traffic from the different socials? Presumably setting links free would mean relatively high traffic per like/share on Bluesky?
It’s nice to be on a platform that has genuine, healthy interactions between users. It’s also nice to not be force fed mind numbing content by an algorithm. Glad we have so much control over the content we see
I had no idea links were penalized on *that other site*. I really haven't used it in a few years anyway. I should get around to deleting my profile soon.
Every social media platform has it's good points and bad. It really is only determined by what the user is looking for and every user is diiferent. Bluesky isn't better, X isn't worse, they are just different!
Also, while Twitter allows links, it penalises the reach of posts that contain them via its algorithm. That's why you'd see news accounts post their scoop with the link to the article in a follow up reply, so the link in the reply being penalised wouldn't impact how the original post performed.
I’ve been out of the social media game for a long time. So just trying to understand. What was the state before? You couldn’t share a link on a post to an external site? (On X/twitter I’m assuming)
Have been posting about how truly revolutionary the open source foundation is for SMS efficacy, esp with a view to social movements.
It's like early Web 2.0, but much better and more relevant/needed right now!

not sure I understand this comment - what kind of links are we talking about? tweets have always supported links and link previews, what’s different here?
weird I had several publications in my feed like AP, Variety, Consequence of Sound, Hollywood Reporter, Vox, etc, and their posts were exclusively external links to articles on their sites but I never noticed - just *now* seeing the news reports on this from 2023 😂
Absolutely true, I love to share links, & youtube videos (which CAN be played here inline), its a way to advocate & spread awareness about brands, creatives, & issues. Thats extremely important in "Social Media", which is why the goons locked it down, twitterX is a failed platform.
Ditto. And with a bunch of other people who appreciate both the opportunity of a blank slate and the team effort it will take to keep things fun and fresh.
This is the best feeling I’ve had about any social media platform.
It’s gonna be so versatile and the fact that you can host ur data is 🤌. Not to mention other social media apps that’s gonna be built on top of the AT Protocol
I actually click on the links, go read the article and then come back to my BlueSky feed exactly where I left it. Occasionally even comment about the link too. Perfect!
yes, not sure the levels pre-elon but now anything with a link is de-boosted, as well as adding new replies to your thread (now the way to do that is quote retweeting)
So does LinkedIn. You can use them, but your post won't appear on peoples Feeds. They have to be reading your feed to see the post. LinkedIn don't want to risk you leaving their platform.
It feels kind of like the decade that Blizzard spent telling folks, “you don’t want WoW Classic, we know better than you.” A reverse chronological feed of stuff from people that I specifically asked to hear from rules.
Agree. Bluesky has no ad infested algorithmic feeds just chronological lists of your followers and (most importantly for me) self curated lists. Plus starter packs and hopefully, some day, federation...

I hope sharing cool things just because takes off here.

can't we all agree to shame people who don't add links to backup their assertions ?
esp when using a clip from a newspaper or such like ?
This place is so much better for that
Block lists are also nice.
I'm sure it's a thing, I just don't understand it

(Into my read later app black hole)
Not a bad app. Really miss spaces though. Hope they add something like that.

This is an SMS revolution, with a truly democratic open source foundation.
Wonderful to read this.

The felling of censorship
The felling of echo chamber
Damn too good
Also… chronological > algo
