Some of us are dual citizens, ya know. Can you imagine how stressful it is following the current political news of both of these countries right now? We are not okay.
It is a bit cringy and nationalist. North American soldiers (US ~AND~ Canadian) missed drip coffee, which wasn’t really a thing in Europe, and Italian Café owners created the Americano so they could have a cup of something to sip on as they weee accustomed. Really speaks more on Italian ingenuity.
Americano is too pro-american and Canadiano is too nationalist-canadian, we need a third option. Just spin a wheel with every other country on it and name it after that instead!
(Oh right we're supposed to do alt text here fuck it's just a picture of a wheel of countries that picked Azerbaijan, why can't I edit something I just posted again?)
Or you could call it a long black, which is what Australians do. It has no racial overtones - the color refers to the coffee - but if you want to phrase it as a celebration of African-Americanism go for it.
Except America is the whole continent, including some coffee growing countries. The US can't do that. We'll be drinking sassafras or chicory if it wasn't for them.
I just read that Americanos are no longer available in some places. They are now called long flats (and made slightly differently - they pour the water in first).
As an American, I approve. Do everything you can to boycott and show your displeasure, and if it happens to be a bit amusing, hell, we can use some of that too! Keep doing the good work!
Who would have thought that the 21st century would be like this? Imagine the Star Trek plot that mused about the year 2025 and the decline of Rule of Law in favor of sound clips from an overweight felon / reality TV show star who wore too much makeup?
Americano is called that because the French were making fun of the Americans who couldn’t drink espresso straight during the wars so they watered it down.
actually it should be canadese since its how you say it in Italian
but canadienses would be a little better than this at least 😭 they made no effort AT ALL
blech. You'd think they'd be smarter than that, you know instead of renaming it, add an identical second drink that costs a little less called a "resedenti" and when someone orders an "Americano" point to "il resedenti" and say "no?"
The irony is that cafe Americano is a derisive way of saying you ruined good espresso by diluting it with hot water for timid palates like an American's.
Try an Aussie "Long Black". Like an Americano but the espresso goes on top of the hot water instead of underneath, which keeps the crema longer ☕ not that I don't like the sound of the Canadiano 🇨🇦🍁💖
It’s called that bc Italian cafe owners created it for US ~and~ Canadian soldiers that missed drip coffee. It was a kindness and good business. Quality beans still make great Americanos
Thank you. It was never a slur. American soldiers were liberating Europe in massive numbers with allied forces. So many people unaware of its origin, not understanding how grateful the Italians and French were for American soldiers. The Americano was one small gesture of their appreciation.
I asked for an Americano at a cafe in Montreal once and the barista had no idea what I was talking about. I explained. A few minutes later he hollered “YOUR NEW YORK IS READY” 💀
Is it just me or does anyone else remember that you could order a Canadiano and it’s actually made differently - you let the water poor through the grounds rather than doing espresso shots and then pouring hot water on those?
While I appreciate the tongue and cheek, snark intended term "freedom booze" making the rounds, to describe any alcohol made outside the United States, this is just stupid. "Freedom Booze" makes fun of the US "freedom fries"; "canadianos" copies "freedom fries". Please stop.
I'm not sure if most of the world blames everyday Russians for Putin being an ahole.
We do blame everyday Americans for not only creating the society that created Trump, but for being so gosh darn proud of creating that society.
I do blame the people for the actions of their government, military, corporations etc
After all, they cannot function without our support, labour, apathy, denial, and delusion.
But then of course, that also has to extend to countries like mine (Australia) that support countries like the US
If you order an Americano Misto at US Starbuck’s they don’t have it. They’ll make a ‘Canadian espresso version’ (which is basically the same recipe).
So @starbuckscanada.bsky.social how about you fly our 🇨🇦 proudly and change the name to Canadian Misto here.
Now is the time with so much 🇨🇦 sharing
They should just call it shitty coffee. The shit stuff. The stuff yanks drink. The kind Italians don’t even recognise as coffee. Which proves Americans don’t even like coffee.
As an American, this is totally legit. Canadianos sound 1000x better than Americanos just like Gulf of Mexico sounds 1000x more legit than Gulf of…I can’t even bring myself to say it
The funniest part about this is that caffè americano derives its name from Europeans, namely Italians, making fun of American G.I.s during WWII for watering down their espressos in order to find them more palatable.
Like, "Oh, I'm sorry. Here let me get you some AMERICAN coffee 🙄"
Funny how this story changes the more it’s told. I’d read from multiple sources during my world war classes that Italian cafes made it bc US ~AND~ Canadian soldiers missed sipping drip coffee in the mornings and this was their answer to that for them. business ingenuity from Italian owners tbh
I will be requesting this at my local favorite (favourite?) coffee shop, here in Portland Oregon.
The Blue Kangaroo, in Sellwood Neighborhood (Neighbourhood?)
"A Canadiano, please!!"
I think that the name Americano is ridiculous and should be used to describe the cheap booze that the US makes. It tastes like crap!!! What moron thought that up for coffee???
It's funny because the term Americano was used to make fun of Americans for thinking espresso was too bitter and couldnt drink it without it being watered down.
It was called Americano by the Italians because it was WEAKER! So keep the name. It’s always been a jab. There is a cocktail version too where the Gin is removed from a Negroni and soda added to make it weaker for Americans too. 🤣
I remember going to a coffee shop many years ago (don't remember where... Victoria, maybe?) where they served Canadianos and it was an Americano sweetened with maple syrup.
Ummmm…. Americano coffee is called that because Americans GIs couldn’t handle Espressos….. they needed to add water to deal with the taste….. so I am not sure I want Canada to be the home of watered down coffee………
okay but ppl from the USA didn’t invent the term, it was the Europeans who had to water down their espressos for the american taste because we were used to coffee. europeans started calling it “americanos”
It is a bit cringy. North American soldiers (US ~AND~ Canadian) missed drip coffee, which wasn’t really a thing in Europe, and Italian Café owners created the Americano so they could have a cup of something to sip on as they weee accustomed. Really speaks more on Italian ingenuity.
I have been all over Europe and Canada. They all talk shit about us and mostly mutter bullshit about us to each other.... but they sure do love our money. Funny how we Americans pretty much do the same here ... except we really don't give a shit for your money. So cut the sanctimonious bullshit.
Tea drinknig american here. An Americano is watered down coffee, coffee made weaker so maybe just clarify and say do you take your coffee the same way you take your democracy?

Not all Americans.
The good ones support and want some of those Canadianos..
let's call it... *spins* The Azerbaijano!
Except America is the whole continent, including some coffee growing countries. The US can't do that. We'll be drinking sassafras or chicory if it wasn't for them.
It’ll drive MAGA absolutely INSANE.
Next time we order we are going to say "Canadiano"
Greetings from Beautiful BC!
but canadienses would be a little better than this at least 😭 they made no effort AT ALL
How about Italiano? 🇮🇹
Heh do it.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
✊🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
"Can I get a large weak American coffee?"
That'll leave a mark.
I still want to taste coffee, I just want to drink it casually.
Quebecers!

It should retain the name "Americano" because it is the worst possible coffee drink. And coffee drinkers should just stop ordering it.
(Also, Canadese would be the proper name in Italian, not Canadiano 🤦🏽♂️).
#cdnpoli #Americano
a random American.
Like, "Oh, I'm sorry. Here let me get you some AMERICAN coffee 🙄"

I here for it though. The US is not good and this is a goofy way to show your distain for it.
It’s next idiotic executive order will be to change it back .
also, is canada not apart of north AMERICA?
(i’m a barista and passionate abt coffee)
Canadoffee drinker here.
This makes you look like idiots.
if they made it up entirely that's the true freedom fries spirit
