And worse we know what the current councillors in the core are doing. We are in a world of hurt and most of council plays a big role in it. Also prov Gov’t doesn’t help with all the legislation that prevents good leadership.

Looking back you can see that Watson was one of the least problematic mayors of the old city and you know how much of critic I am of him. This idea that if only Ottawa returned to its old boundaries it would help is false. We know the historical record.

I agree but when I lived there our councillor was our biggest obstacle. Never forget that the majority of problems in the old city of Ottawa were created by the pols of the old city

So no it’s not as simple as taking steps, which yes in isolation seem easy such as deliveries. Because most of the objections are PR, as in owner delivers himself using his car, etc… It’s not as simple as showing people that yes we can remove parking, then what? It’s the lack of next step that hurts

But that’s the problem the leadership we have is crystal clear through their actions that they will use this attempt at rearranging the deck chairs as argument, I know I use to live there and we’ve been through this before. We need better leadership and stop giving ammo to opponents.

I agree, my point though is that removing parking should come last, transit first. Otherwise it will provide ammo to those opposed to transit and being pro-car. It is in fact a well known tactic. Without proper transit, any attempt to reshape the market is doomed to be what it is today.

Transit is not the only issue, but is key to solving so many other issues that I believe there’s no way around massive investments in transit. We needed massive bus order years ago, it needs to happen now
comment in response to post
That’s the problem though, if you have to take any bus to the LRT then no it’s not best serve and that’s on purpose from the city so we have to rely on cars and I mean that from the core, not even outside the greenbelt. With the massive cuts even bus routes in core are crap.

Which is another reminder as to why I do not believe that what is required is to listen to their grievances. Clearly they have no grievance but are driving a narrative to support their desired outcome. And I agree with your worries.

Great comments and I like your idea for transit. Considering how much the market is focused on bars, then transit should be the priority. We need better service in terms of service hours and frequency network wide. If you do the transit first, it becomes easier to remove parking

Wished I had a roof over my head when I plug in my car at that place. I wonder if what will happen to that place now that both restaurants are closed and so is the tourist office. Also the new EV chargers are across the street. Hope they don’t close this as it’s nice to have access to toilets.

Partisanship but also a perfect storm of: Liberals who were facing utter defeat, small-c conservatives who before Carney were resigning themselves into voting Conservative, but went for Carney and you get a situation where how dare we criticize their saviour! Very sad and concerning.

Agree with you massive red flag. It sounds like: jobs? We don’t need no stinkin jobs where we’re going! The irony that he was elected (by some) to save Cdn jobs from the trade war…

At this point HSR is happening because Air Canada is in the winning consortium and need HSR to block Porter’s ops in the triangle. The 5 years planning window gives time for AC to get rid of some aircraft.

You may very well catch some lol. Often it feels like half venting and half : look at how important I am that I have to block so many people. You’re right they should just do it.

Mind you, electoral reform will anger the sorts of people who threaten separation because it would mean Alberta and Saskatchewan would not go nearly so Conservative in federal elections.

the issue is that most of the grievances are not based in reality. Hence we outsiders cannot answer your call to arms which to listen to the grievance. Also this isn’t nothing new, we’re exhausted. At some point the solution will have to come from within. I know it’s hard I come from QC.
comment in response to post
Thank you for your whole thread. As someone who grew up in QC and left because I couldn’t take it anymore. I was having flashback listening to Steve or reading his posts. And I was struck by the way he framed the issue. I have been there done that, no more. Looking forward to read your post

Which is sad because there’s some businesses in western Canada that are trying to take off, but their prov Gov’t are trying to kill them because diversification is bad. Which also explains the lack of pop, which means fewer seats. And you never mention any of that.
comment in response to post
I am not sure the way you frame it helped. It’s not east vs west it’s certain industries who have been successful at keeping western Canada into a few resources industries. And here the provincial gov’ts are in the driver’s seat. Worse when fed Gov’t tried to help there’s pushback

I am too scared to say it in the languages I know, today on the train two were blasting their music on speakers!

Isn’t the difference that they haven’t enable fare capping on Presto but they did on O-Payment?

Make no mistake: the authoritarian right may have lost the election, but it continued its rise. The information ecology is poisoned and every Liberal capitulation to elite power at the expense of working people will be cynically exploited. Let's get off this nauseating ride.

The assignment was to keep the CPC down. The middle-right Liberals now have a fiscally conservative leader who committed to a $225 billion austerity deficit to protect corps & billionaires. And the fascist-right Conservatives now hold a greater balance of power. This election elevated them. Fail.
comment in response to post
Absolutely. But the reason I always insist, is that most of council and the mayor are right-wing and so is the provincial Gov’t. So even if we had the best transit managers, without funding and ok from Gov’t, you can’t do more than what we’re getting. We have a political problem

The buck stops with council and mayor.
