100 billionaire families spent $2.6 billion in the 2024 election. 70% of these donations went to Republicans. Now, Republicans in Congress are gearing up to slash essential programs to pay for another round of tax cuts predominantly for the rich. This is what oligarchy looks like.

SF sounded the alarm over this decades ago ('grey goo'), that it's taken an informational rather than physical form doesn't invalidate the warning

Food security doesn’t mean growing more, it means growing smarter. Less waste, more diversity and putting nature at the heart of farming.

This is quite straightforwardly fascism.

How The U.S. Is Resettling White South African Refugees theonion.com/how-the...

There should be a GLOBAL response to this. The completely avoidable 2008 crash caused by U.S. banks was a GLOBAL crash, and the global community expected the U.S. to put in place (and KEEP in place) rules that would keep it from happening again. Removing such guardrails should have consequences.

“Around 200 Israeli citizens living in the UK have written to the British government demanding it suspend its trade relations with Israel until the country lifts its total siege on Gaza.” To think that Israeli citizens themselves need to tell the UK govt this…

Simply this.

I’m one of those dodgy immigrants who came here on a spouse visa and got indefinite leave to remain after 12 months. The incalculable harm I have done to the UK includes dedicating my life to public service, educating thousands of British young people, and paying more tax than I’ll ever get back.

This document is not a US-UK trade treaty. It lacks details, not legally binding. No method specified for testing hormone infested beef. At best, it outlines negotiating positions on selected areas. It is not approved by parliament. It is not a substitute for pre-Brexit trade deal with the EU.

Keir Starmer immitates Reform in his divisive speech. Accuses immigrants of causing “incalculable damage”, making the UK “an island of strangers”. Rightly faces backlash from unions, employers, MPs. Silence on class war, inequalities, profiteering, lack of public services, fuelling frustrations.

Seems like, given his social media history, that the new pope might have some problems at immigration if he tries to visit the US.

Hugely proud of @scientistsx.bsky.social on the launch of their new book #ScientistsOnSurvival Personal Stories of Climate Action. This is a deeply moving and inspiring book that everyone needs to read -every chapter left me in tears or with goosebumps. Read more: www.scientistsforxr.earth/our-book

Every single western pundit, politician, person on this site, pro Israel group, who mindlessly chanted for 18 months, ‘if Hamas released the hostages the war would be over’… should hang their heads in shame, & spend the rest of their lives apologizing, especially for being played by Netanyahu!

The reason why protest is essential to political change is that only when people *see* the scale of discontent do they realise they are not alone, and that the tide can turn.

‘The whole policy is wrong’: rebellion among Labour MPs grows over £5bn benefits cut

Whenever "gender criticals" organise a protest it's thirty people max. And that includes the actual Nazis that turn up to support them. This rally for trans rights was organised in a couple of days and there are protests like this in cities and towns over the whole country

A fossil fuel project in Teesside has landed a £10bn subsidy for a fairytale carbon capture technology -recent studies show the plant’s total emissions would far exceed any carbon stored under the sea Read more about this second, new challenge to Net Zero Teesside goodlawproject.org/labour-is-ch...

Watchdog raises concern over DWP plan to deduct benefit overpayments. Govt wants 24/7 access to benefit claimants bank accounts, remove money without agreement or court order, right to appeal. Banks will charge fees. People could be left without money to pay for essentials.

Private Eye nails Trump, trade and Brexit......

"On Wednesday, just days before her wedding, 25-year-old Hassouna was killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit her home in northern Gaza. Ten members of her family, including her pregnant sister, were also killed"

Beware of zonal electricity pricing. Will increase energy industry profits; higher cost for consumers in congested areas; profiteering = less incentive to innovate; make some industries less competitive; increase regional inequalities; deter regional mobility. Ofgem not protecting people.

Hey Bluesky! We've got until (most likely) September to organise a huge protest against Trump's visit to the UK. Some ways to get involved: 🍊 Sign up for updates on the protest date and location at stoptrump.org.uk and point people our way (continued in next post)

Free speech latest.

trump is saying that the price of eggs went down 87%, which is a bald faced fucking lie. That would put a carton of eggs at $2. He's saying the price of gas went down to $1.98 in three states yesterday, but the lowest it went down ANYWHERE was $2.75.

US political podcasts are just wild to listen to at the moment. 12 minutes of people agreeing that the nation and its institutions are in full scale collapse, followed by an ad break in which the same host tries to sell you discounted therapy.

Harvard rejected the Trump administration's demands to change its policies to keep billions in federal grants. Its president said the demands are unnecessary and infringe on free speech rights.

aside: a stunning comment from David Baker, UW professor who won the Nobel Prize in 2024. Now 15 lab members are looking for positions overseas. “There’s so many amazing people who want to come in, & we can’t take them. The Nobel Prize was just a little blip. But things have gotten quite bleak.”
