Breaking News: A judge said the government should release Kseniia Petrova, a Russian scientist employed by Harvard University, saying U.S. customs had “no factual or legal basis” for revoking her visa.

the national "fell for it again" awards competition has come to southern missouri. big fan of watching people delude themselves that this isn't what they voted for while the guy next to them smiles and speaks the truth: yes you did, you just feel bad about it now.

this is fucking appalling, Kennedy is verifiably a crackpot whose beliefs are deadly and whose only interest in science is screaming about the legit science that doesn’t flatter his beliefs and touting pseudoscience that does

Great advice from @sulliview.bsky.social, including this: “Demand better of the news media you follow.” Let them know you’re watching. She says good news orgs pay attention. My newspaper did because we believed every reader counts. open.substack.com/pub/margaret...

"D.C.’s 50-year-old experiment with hyperlocal representation is as novel today as it was then – there’s no real structure or system that can be compared to ANCs pretty much anywhere in the U.S." @maustermuhle.bsky.social for @51st.news The ANC system is fascinating 51st.news/what-are-was...

In light of the discourse, I’m boosting a piece I wrote recently about why Democrats should focus on changing public opinion rather than chasing it.

I honestly think that this is a sanctionable brief. It falsely claims that the District Court "forc[ed] the government to detain [8 men] at a military base in Djibouti." This is false. As Judge Murphy himself repeatedly emphasized, it was the DOJ that requested the option of holding them overseas!

BREAKING: Scott Pelley just risked everything to make one thing clear: The attack on free speech isn’t coming—it’s already here. Journalists are being silenced, critics are being punished, and most of the media’s playing dead. This is state-sponsored suppression. This is dictatorship in real time.

President Trump sought to wipe out all federal funding for NPR & PBS with an executive order, calling them biased. NPR and three public radio stations sued this morning, alleging Trump is violating Constitutional protections. Coming up 4.20/6.20p on NPR's All Things Considered. My story below:

The sins of “The Left” are perpetrated by every random poster on the internet; the sins of “The Right” don’t include those perpetrated by Republican elected federal officials.

The Federal Register extended the notice and comment period on the Trump admin's Schedule F civil service purges until June 4—and the topic is trending. More than 1 MILLION comments to date. www.regulations.gov/document/OPM... Background www.allrisenews.com/p/trump-purg...

NEW from me @thedispatchmedia.bsky.social “Farm country voted overwhelmingly to unleash a new trade war. And now these same farmers want taxpayers to finance another round of bailouts to protect them from the consequences of their own votes.” Hell no.

Do not listen to RFK Jr. on covid vaccines for pregnant people. Listen to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which STRONGLY recommends a covid vaccine during pregnancy, for the health of the pregnant person and the fetus. 🧪 www.acog.org/covid-19/cov...

“Preserving art, literature, and philosophy will require no less than the creation of an environment totally and uncompromisingly committed to abolishing the linguistic alienation created by AI and reintroducing students to the indispensability of their own voice.“

“[S]tablecoins and crypto are just fundamentally useless-at-best and harmful at worst. … Unless you’re a criminal, there are no use cases for these currencies.” @jaredb-econ.bsky.social + @weakinstrument.bsky.social ▶️ why “the so-called #GENIUSAct is a dangerous piece of legislation.”

Elon Musk has a favorite phrase when making bold promises: “Next year.” From Full Self Driving and Hyperloop to robotaxis and literal robot armies, we traced his timeline of big talk and missed marks—because in Elon’s world, hype usually outruns reality.

One of many reasons why Paramount settling Trump’s case is unjustifiable. They can’t document any illegal arrangement for him to allow their merger in exchange for payment. So they’d essentially be making a handshake deal with…Donald Trump.

Neil Gorsuch normally: the Bible says that oil companies can drill a well directly in your living room without compensation Neil Gorsuch on Native rights: LAND BACK

It’s sure is great that the media environment has effectively flattened their idea who “stands for” the Democratic Party, where random people online are seen as more representative and authoritative than actual politicians doing politics. No negative consequences to that whatsoever

This is a crime against humanity that I can’t believe anyone who has learned the lessons of the Holocaust would ever commit.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “Over the last four months, the legal world — and the country — has been plunged into chaos, and the Supreme Court bears a heavy dose of responsibility,” writes Kate Shaw in a guest essay.

it's pretty damning when it's all laid out like this www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

“If the unitary executive theory is subject to exceptions for contexts in which the practical consequences of eliminating an agency’s independence would be too extreme, then it’s not much of a theory.” Today’s “One First” on #SCOTUS’s deeply flawed ruling last Thursday in Trump v. Wilcox:

AI ads know their target demo, lonely losers.

Sit with this @kateshaw.bsky.social paragraph for a moment.

Amid rising tensions between the Trump administration and the judiciary, some federal judges are beginning to discuss the idea of managing their own armed security force. www.wsj.com/us-news/law/...

I did some reporting today on the condition Billy Joel has, normal pressure hydrocephalus: what it is, how it's diagnosed and treated, and the prognosis (very good for many patients). I also spoke to two people who have it. They had severe symptoms when they were diagnosed but are now doing well.

1/ Andrew Ferguson seems to think he can invoke "competition" as if it were a magic spell that makes the First Amendment disappear. But he's not even an illusionist, let alone a wizard. He can't even hide his game: abusing government power to enforce personal preferences.

I realize posting this here is preaching to the choir. But after the Grok White Genocide thing & Ye essentially launching an exclusive Neo Nazi single on the platform... I felt motivated to write about X and how bizarre it is that so many people (news outlets, celebrities, politicians) use it

One thing people aren’t grasping about ICE waiting in immigration court to kidnap people at their hearings: DOJ lawyers are *intentionally dismissing cases* to avoid having to do any work & due process by just handing them to ICE. Pathetic & illegal. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

TODAY

Honestly I would rather drown

Mothers, hide your Overton Windows! A secretive effort is at work to convince courts the US is legally under "invasion." MAGA loyalists have pushed this fringe legal theory for years. Now, it's the linchpin of Trump's mass deportation campaign and his extraordinary threats to suspend habeas corpus.

I believe this means the sun will set over the entirety of the British Empire tonight for the first time in several hundred years. Chagos is the dot below India on this map. Sunset in the Pitcairns (dot in the Pacific) will happen ~40 minutes before sunrise in Akrotiri and Dhekelia (dot on Cyprus).

to understand what the fuck is going on with the political press, consider dixon: "an inability to admit one has been in the wrong will be greater the more wrong one has been, and the more wrong one has been the more bizarre will be subsequent attempts to justify the unjustifiable."

"Last night, another assailant used the Palestinian struggle as a pretext to harm Jews." @yair-rosenberg.bsky.social is, again, on point.

An underrated horseshoe dynamic that shapes a lot of US political.cultural discourse is that seething, inchoate resentment aimed at this mental image unifies both the entire right-wing political-media infrastructure AND the heights of prestige left/liberal media and intelligentsia.

Fight Trump's politicization of public services. Write a comment opposing the proposed Office of Personnel Management rule to politicize public services. You can do it in 5 minutes. Deadline is May 23rd!

KEEP YELLING ABOUT EVERYTHING

While some online leftists celebrate the shooting at a Jewish museum, worth noting that the most left-wing Democrats condemned it. If, HaShem forbid, there were a shooting at a Palestinian cultural center, I am far from sure the most hard right Republicans would respond with similar condemnation.

The GAO today found that the Trump Administration violated the Impoundment Control Act by suspending approval of state plans and stopping spending money for the electric vehicle infrastructure program created by President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. www.gao.gov/products/b-3...

FAA Approves Elon Musk's SPACEX Starship return to flight--after two catastrophic explosions that sent debris falling down to earth. This means Starship will launch again soon. Will see if another Starship blows up.

Curious what the correct proportion of criticism of Republicans:criticism of Democrats is for people to start thinking Dems should adjust their behavior.

The vote was 215-214 with the 3 notable missing votes because Dems died in office. If you are one of those people scolding those of us who say it's time for old ass reps to retire, know you're part of the reason all these Americans got fucked.

Update: This happened last night—Senate Republicans went nuclear, overruling the parliamentarian and blowing up the filibuster to repeal California's vehicle emissions standards. Many Republicans will likely cite this precedent as reason to bypass the filibuster to pass the reconciliation bill too.

Full disclosure: I was up at the wee hours past midnight helping my very good friend Eric through this bill after he flagged the language for me. If you want to support the only journalist who was up late last night asking lawmakers about trans Americans, PLEASE share this story.
