I dread this because as a scientist, Libreoffice extremely limited in certain aspects - Calc is limited to 1024 columns. Impress does not handle videos as seamlessly as Powerpoint, and none of these have good cloud-collaboration and storage. Also, the UI is broken on MacOS.

I would strongly recommend Python/Matplotlib instead of subjecting students to the horror that is R syntax. And ggplot2 it is even worse.

This is partly a fudge of the English language, where ‘Doctor’ has come to mean a physician. In most other languages, a physician is a physician, while a Doctor is strictly an academic title for somebody who has a Ph.D (including in medicine) as per the Latin roots of the term.

I liked it too. I think there are a bunch of ideas floating around only because they are seem to tally with the 'benevolent mother nature' concept ...esp. when it comes to plants.

I did read. And it is basically a TL version of ‘Use more N’. I think everyone in this business knows that more N is good, but often not practicable esp. since NGS data are primarily exploratory and for hypothesis generation. And let’s not even start about replicates in patient cohorts.

It turns out it's the link you posted - it has a tracker ( please don't do that, its not cool ) that redirects specifically to Amazon US. And Amazon US it not allowed to sell books in Europe, I think. Manually searching it on Amazon Germany allowed me to buy it.

I personally have grave doubts on whether such publications make any impact on real world grant committees. This publication states what is obvious to every academic scientist. Yet, the system continues to follow the same old standards and methods of publication and evaluation.

I think the value of number 3 is deeply under-estimated in biology. Other disciplines such as physics and math recognise that conjecture is better than a hypothesis, and crucial for advance.

Even more ironic, that is how a document is stored even in Word - XML metadata with plain text content. This is no less stupid than having the jumbled characters on a QWERTY keyboard.

Academia being academia has been the slowest to adapt to more straightforward writing forms such as Markdown, where you provide the content and metadata and the reader renders it as they see fit. Ironically, LateX existed long before the web and had solved this problem.

The basic issue with word processors is that besides word processing, they also blend anachronistic models of paper and print - models that are no longer required eg: A4 size is meaningless on a web page on a screen.

And now again, we are trying to get label-free while preserving the same segmentation capabilities as the labelled versions using either different ways of generating the contrast or using machine learning etc. of course this is subjective and semantic and has nothing to do with the science.

It’s historical. Brightfield was the first and it was originally label free anyway. Then came the labels - first chromophores and then fluorophores which segmented structures that could not be distinguished in brightfield.

This is cool but it’s a little cringe to call good old brightfield imaging ‘label-free' even if technically correct. Label free typically is used to refer to photoacoustic, Raman-based, optical coherence…unconventional ways of generating contrast.

This is way too much complication for a simple format conversation. Handbrake will work on any platform and do it.
